Fixing a Lint Problem on GE Ultrafast Combo Units: How to Modify the Filter

After running the GE Ultrafast Combo 2-in-1 unit, one major issue we found was lint build-up where there shouldn't be any: On the blue evaporator coils. If the build-up gets significant, it could cause worsening times to properly dry the clothes, and also cause premature failure of the heat pump system due to these drying times.
In the video, we test a modification of the filter assembly and then test the machines dozens of times to determine if this will in fact solve or at least reduce the problem on the unit.

Great video. I find that putting clear silicon sealant along the seams on plastic grid that holds the black foam filter, yields the best result for me. When it's time to wash the black foam filter, I can usually peel off the silicon sealant in 2 or 3 long strands. When it's time to reapply the silicon, I find that I have to wait a day for the silicon to fully cure. After each use, I tend to vacuum the entire filter cartridge then stick an extending Stiffer duster inside the filter compartment. With this method, I'm finding the lint inside the unit is almost nonexistent. Also, out of habit from my previous Maytag Maxima washer, I tend to remove the detergent tray, filter cartridge, and leave the unit door cracked open to prevent mold.

As I do 3D design, I am tempted to design a whole new filter system. One that fits better to stop lint moving around the filter unit, and also has a tighter seal around the actual filters to stop the issue as shown here.

I couldn't get the sealer locally so ordered it from Amazon to be here tomorrow. I did get the electrical tape and put it on the filter. On the second load I ran when I pulled the filter out there was a big blob of built up lint, etc. and I got that out. Thank you for your fix for the problem. When the sealer comes tomorrow I will take the tape off and use the sealer. The tape doesn't stay on well but is doing the job for today. Thanks again for your help. I got my machine in December and it works great, it was expensive at Home Depot and I want it to last. Will keep on top of cleaner. Bought a hose connector for my Dyson 8 and it will get most of anything out. Keep up the good work. Am subscribed. 😀

The left side of the lint filter is also an issue. After 7 months of use I discovered a thick "lint cake" collected at the top of the duct that feeds warm moist air to the filter. This lint cake was about a half inch thick on mine until I managed to remove it with a flexible grabber tool and got about three handfuls out of there which was likely restricting air flow. Another thing that can happen is lint that falls into the filter track being continuously pushed back against the back wall until it prevents the filter from being fully inserted. This can prevent the micro switch that detects the fully inserted filter from being depressed causing the machine to bulk about fully fully inserting the filter. I think for the average user all of these lint issues will eventually lead to significantly reduce drying after a full year of continuous use unless this is conscientiously addressed on an ongoing basis.

That's good to hear. I suppose LG could use spray nozzles to wash down the fins - after all, water in- and outlets are given. In Europe, they use the condensate in their dryers to flush the front of the condenser. Bosch dryers will also wash the front of the evaporator.

We've noticed a decent amount of pet hair collecting in the back bottom and front top of the blue coils on our unit. I use the Milwaukee Air Tip flexible hose attachment with my little shop vac to clean them off carefully every once in a while. There's no telling how much is collecting farther down in the machine. We do a lot of laundry and we haven't noticed any increase in time yet, though.I think the hair is completely bypassing the filter. I don't think the little rubber gasket around the side of the lint filter gets a very good seal and it allows air to get around.

So sorry, but Now you know, and here I am back again, wanting to see what you have now. I was thinking KAPTON Tape which is non conductive and heat resistant. We use in electronics, 3d Printers etc. Very Good Tape. I have had my current Sear units cleaned, replaced the heat element in the dryer, and rollers in the washer. I also replaced a jumper wire on one high power circuit in the dryer after it melted the solder at the joint. But we are in our 4th quarter of life now and looking to downsize and we will want to replace these Machines they are almost 15 Years old, this new All in One looks great. We hate changing the loads, we want to drain the pump easier, and we like the heat pump idea for energy savings. And it seems it can do sheets and towels well. Appreciate you in depth reviews and great presentation style. Keep it up, Dennis & Margaret in Virginia

You are right that there is a lint sealing problem, but the problem is not inside the assy. Lint screen already prevents lint getting through that cap so that is not the issue. The problem is that the assy itself doesn't seal well to the outer perimeter. So what needs to be done is to add extra seals around the filter assy so there is no air leakage around the whole filter assy. This is a bit tricky thing to do because the caps are not big and you still need to be able to remove and reinstall the whole assy to clean the lint filter, but it can be done. I did that to my machine and it fixed the problem. GE needs to redesign the addy and make sure that the new filter assy seals fully to the machine to prevent this from happening.

I too have the problem. We do two to three loads a day. Definitely getting buildup of lint on the coils. Cleaning it, it almost looks like dirt. GE tech support suggested I get a plastic cleaning brush that they carry for maintenance. I've ordered it, but it is but a patch for a manufacturing defect. The replacement foam filter is cheap, and available but the scaffolding is on back order until march. I'm thinking people are trying to glue the foam filter to the scaffolding. It's flimsy and if buildup occurs it would definitely flex and open a gap that lets the lint thru. That was what I'm going to try. I think the buildup gets so massive that the foam filter just bends and lets the lint thru.

I have been modifying what products I have used to work on the filter. I am almost done. If you send me an email address, I could send photos, I don’t have any RU-vid videos and I’m not on any social media platforms. I wanted to be simple and clean as possible. It basically includes specific weatherproof, stripping in specific locations as well as an upgraded filter pad instead of the black cheap crappy one they supply. My testing has also confirmed that the replacement internal filter pad does not block CFM and will catch down .15 microns of dust / lint. My secondary filter should last well over 3 to 6 months, and you can just replace it or take it out and vacuum It. treat it like a car air filter. Also, you will still need to get an inexpensive vacuum with a long tube to collect any bulk lint that is accumulated on the left side of the track rails. I am also testing a back gasket on the rear of the filter so when you push it straight in it will block that rectangle indent and seal off the whole rear, so nothing gets by that way also. So far, I have had excellent results. My job on two units that I own is once a week regardless of what the machine tells me is to pull the filter out vacuum it vacuum the rails slide it back in good to go.
@shawnhamel5711
@shawnhamel5711 10 месяцев назад
I feel that the filter tracks are the problem. This is where the filter rides into the machine and sits. You restricted the air being pulled through the imperfections in the filter. If they put a gasket on the left side of the filter it would eliminate the ability for air to go around the filter through the small gaps. These small gaps will retain lint and when you slide out the filter the lint will loosen to fall into the coil.

@@HomeGuySolutions Where?

I believe that the majority of the lint is passing through the top, bottom, and rear sides of the filter, not through those gaps in the plastic that youve sealed. The area you sealed comes after the 1st stage mesh filter, so there wouldnt be any large strands coming through there and it wouldnt be the source of the large lint buildups. 5:01 shows that lint is still coming through at the bottom after your solution. I dont think its a minor amount. When you insert the filter into the machine but dont push it all the way in, you would be able to jiggle the filter up and down. This indicates that there are air gaps along the top and bottom slots. My solution is to use foam window seals that have sticker backing. I stick ~1/4 inch thick foam along the filter ridges, and that fixed the problem for me. I'll make a video of this soon.

Everything was dried to my satisfaction. My spouse said every machine, when using senor dry, does this and she always turns it off. Here is the reason I bought it and will continue to use it. Old LG dryer pulled over 6000W continuous. new GE unit pulled a max of 1100w, but never continous more like 600w to 800w. Do the math depending on your electric KWh costs...this saves a lot of money espeically if your in the 25c/kwh and do a lot of loads. Plus added bonus, I eliminated a 240v breaker and converted it to a dedicated 120v outlet in the laudry room which now has the space for my commercial freezer....no down side to this unit for me.

I’ve been following your tips and planning on doing this one. QUESTION I have cleaned a lot of the lint out. It was collecting down in the left side looking in and along back. I can’t get it perfect but it’s better. Now I’m not getting much lint collecting on the dry white side of the push in filter. I used to clean after each load a significant amount. Also the lint I just cleaned with brush is more damp than originally. We have lots of pets and I clean hair out of inner blue rubber on loads especially sheets and blankets. I threw out the packaging. I had purchased several and tried all different sorts of devices to vacuum inside. When I send the video, I will also send photos of the brushes. I believe it was a kit I purchased at Home Depot. It had one long skinny brush, and one fat one around 3 inches Round and 4 inches long. The bristles were just right and not too stiff. In order to use that larger brush, you do not push back-and-forth on the fins. You rotate the brush slowly to get in between the fence and at the same time keep a vacuum attachment just sucking the lint out. You can actually just hold it under the brush And spin the brush slowly or, just spin the brush to loosen everything up and then vacuum straight in and straight out without touching any of the. That is all you will need. Anyone who regrets this purchase, I would say once you know how to clean it until a new filter has been designed, it’s a great machine. It looks like GE is way superior over LG, just the fact that the size of their condenser is only a quarter of the size of what GE uses, shows a lot about what they whipped together. Also, looking at the video that was posted of only several washes there was more buildup on the LG then there was on the GE. I have no clue how to fix the LG problem, because I don’t own that machine yet.

After using the GE Ultrafast Combo for about 6 to 8 months now I would have to say the biggest issue is the filter followed by the items being stuck to the drum walls and having to pull them down and run another dry cycle. But sticking to the lint filter, I did two things that reduced the lint getting by the filter. One, I use a shop vac to clean the filter. I have noticed that using the shop vac also cleans the foam filter so it does not get as dirty as quick. Still need to clean the foam filter just not as often. Secondly the top of the filter assembly towards the front where the lint seems to squeeze by I noticed what looks like a design in the frame that they use to push the assemble tight against the frame. I was able to place a piece of plastic stirring straw in there so the pressure would increase against the from. This seemed to work better because I saw a 85% reduction of lint after a wash and dry. Also since trying to get a new foam piece from GE is impossible, I made my own piece of from from 1/8" thick with 60 holes per sq inch which I cut to make it fit edge to edge so the frame when snapped in made a seal around the edge (6.25" x 16.75"). If someone knows how to get the specs on the foam that would be awesome.....

I agree the filter was poorly designed and engineered. It isn’t just taping that seam. The lint also goes around the back plane of the filter where it is supposed to seated and seal against the rear of the housing once you slide the complete filter housing into place. The foam filter does very little to stop lint from passing. I use the Winix pet pre-filter sheets to overcome most the lint issue. If you look from front to back of the filter on the foam side you will see that the lip distance is inconsistent. The lip distance is greater in front than in back. The shorter the distance means the filter is less likely to stop lint from passing and ending up on the condenser fins.

I clean the filter after every cycle and check it before every cycle. I hadn’t used mine in about a week and when I checked the filter I noticed a musty mildew smell, no lint though. I’ve noticed the vent area stays wet/humid between washes and I think this is potentially an issue for the machine that can lead to mildew growth in that area. Since you’ve torn it down, curious to hear if you’ve noticed any mildew growth anywhere. Thanks!

Similar issue here. No musty smell, but there are times when the filter is pretty wet at the end of a load. I also had to call GE right when I got the unit because my lint filter had mold spots on it! That was brand new when it was delivered/installed about 2 months ago. GE has been good about getting back to me though. I've gotten emails and even a phone call to let me know that they will be replacing the whole unit .... not just the lint filter, the whole thing. I did confirm it would be a brand new one and not a refurb..That call was about a week ago so we'll see if they follow through.

To make the filter gasket, I would take some cues from mold making. If one were to wax the outside edges of the filter, then use the gasket maker and press the filter into the gasket maker, the foam filter could be removed once the gasket maker sets up, making a form-fitted gasket.. It wouldn't be 100% but none of these solutions will be 100% since some air will be getting around the outside of the filter frame where it slides into the machine..

Im going to lead with a positive. According to the GE app, I ran my first load of laundry in this unit on October 12th. Since then, I have ran 227 cycles. I have 2 kids who give this thing some serious work to do. It handles the proverbial kitchen sink my family have thrown at it and has done a fantastic job so far. If this machine keeps running efficiently, I'm going to be happy with it. My complaint is why I'm watching this video. There is some serious lint build up on my condenser coils. So much so that 3 months in, I purchased a $20 vacuum attachment and the $15 GE coil cleaning brush set. I hit it with this 1-2 punch the other day, and while I parted the clouds a little, it still looks like rain in there. My next step is to tear down the unit and perform a thorough cleaning to get it back in shape while I implement the fix shown in this video. This thing should have easily been kicked back to engineering during the testing phase because there is no way the majority of these units will be profitable over the first 5 seeing the kind of build up that I am. I don't expect to be watching these videos in the small hours of the night after dropping the kind of coin it takes to procure one of these. GE absolutely should have done better here.

Does room air temperature and moisture cause changes in drying time?
@Kandralla
@Kandralla 10 месяцев назад
It's a closed system so the answer is "probably not very much". What that means depends on how clever they choose to be with the water removed when drying. At some point the unit gets to its target temperature and then the heat pump will have to throttle down to keep the temperature from increasing which is going to slow down how quickly the unit can remove moisture from your clothes. If they wanted to be clever they could use the condensed water to remove heat from the system so the heat pump can run harder without increasing the temps (they're effectively dumping the excess heat down the drain in this case); if they do this then outside temperatures probably have no effect. If not then they're just dumping excess heat to air via the shell of the unit; when it's hot outside that will be harder to do and drying will take longer. As an owner of one of these there are two things I've noticed: 1. The only evidence that they're relying on outside air to keep the thing cool is that there are a couple passive vent holes on the back of the unit. I can't hear a fan cycling on and off and I have yet to feel any substantial air coming out of the vent. 2. The unit occasionally runs the water when it's in dryer mode (right at the beginning, and I think I've heard it do so in the middle of the drying cycle). Which I would expect to happen if it was using water to keep the unit cool and there's not enough coming from the inside of the dryer (like near the end of the cycle) That tends to point to them using the condensed water to remove waste heat; which means outside temps probably don't impact the unit at all.
