Fixing a Pedal with a Loud Hum or Buzz (Not Power Supply Related)

This video will show you how to fix a pedal that is causing hum or buzz in your signal chain. I isolated the problem down to the input and output jacks. The jacks were technically fine, but there was an issue with dry solder joints.
In this video, I show you what the problem is and how simple it is to fix with just a soldering iron and some solder.
The issue I was facing was a huge buzz or hum through my amplifier as well as a loud click or banging sound when I pushed on the jacks. This should sort out the majority of issues with hum or buzz in a pedal.
Please note: Some buzz or hum can be caused by a bad power supply but in my case the power supply is new and I tested it by process of elimination.

I know this video is a bit different from the regular content but I think it might be helpful for anyone experiencing the same issues with any pedal. I tried everything before opening this up and fixing it, but this did the trick. 😀

yep ...really good vid shane ...bit different ...but just as needed . I have often wondered why GTR leads stuff up so much....i have so many over the years....do you think it is worth while having a crack at them with the solder ? Might just go wireless and be done with them ...but in a studio - you need to use cable still ....so might be a good new skill

Usually they stop working when one of the wires comes off the jack. They are usually very easily fixed. I've had the same cables now for about 10 years or so.

A worthy info vid Shane. Tech tip > Leave the iron on the joint long enough to see all the solder melt when reflowing. On the larger tabs like on the jack sockets it takes a little longer for the heat to spread across and melt ALL the solder that you're wanting to reflow.. Your "quick dab" technique worked for you this time, it may not always. Just a second or two longer would have been enough. Appeal to authority - I have a Black Belt in soldering 😜
@senspartech3533
@senspartech3533 4 года назад
Not all heroes wear capes :P Just as a bit of an additional add (heh): Try to use the iron to make contact with both surfaces/items you are trying to reflow or connect. Direct contact is best, naturally, but you CAN use the solder to make that contact for you.. If and only if you give it enough time to do so. Having a high wattage or high temp iron can help too. We always need to be wary of burning out sensitive components, so it might seem counter-intuitive. But, when we use a higher temp it tends to not give enough time for the heat to spread. Some might find it easier to start or learn with a bit lower temps, and there is certainly a preference factor, but dont be afraid to try it up a bit higher! For truly sensitive parts, use clip-on heatsinks. They are cheap and in a variety of form factors. Finally: Do NOT move the joint while its cooling. We can even use heatsinks to hold it solidly in plenty of cases.

From Leo: Your camera work was fine, it was easy to tell what you were doing. I have also scraped the paint around the jack mounting holes to make sure the housing and cable earths are all at the same potential. One pedal I had to run a small piece of copper wire from the ground of the input jack to the output jack. Good Luck and Merry Christmas.

I've assembled lots of circuits in my time and learned that it's better to get the jack surface nice and hot before following the solder. Jacks are where I've had the most cold "sawder" joints. I even use a dab of flux! Good fix Shane. BTW, my board was picking up a radio station yesterday.

Super troubleshooting tip mate. Going to go check my signal chain now, got a link that seems to cause some serious hum that could be caused by this. Replaced a power supply with one that has a 3pin Aussie power plug, made it less obvious but this and properly shielding some pickup cavities might solve it completely. Have a great Christmas an New year and all the best to you and yours. cheers.

As you stated, if the case is metal sometimes just tightening the nut on the socket is all thats needed. Electrical contact cleaner spray is also a great addition to the guitarist toolkit for use on scratchy pots and pickup selector switches.

@@intheblues That was exactly the hint I needed! I've literally just received a pedal bought a pedal off eBay, and it had a hum that would only go away if I kept my foot rested on it. Hearing that remark at 4:26, I immediately hunted out a socket set, & found I was able to tighten both the input & output socket nuts by hand - without the aid of the wrench! Job's a good'un! Shane, sometimes heating up the joint will work, but it's actually not the way to do it. Heat the joint first, then melt the solder into it. The flux in the solder will help clean the joint and stop it from getting a cold solder joint (where it looks dull and has poor contact). Otherwise you'll be doing the same in the not too distant future.

I recently bought a new tape echo pedal to be near the end of my pedal chain. It sounded great on RU-vid but, to my disappointment, it had a bit of hum and noise. The hum/noise went away when the next pedal in the chain was engaged. The simple solution was to add a $15 Mosky mini pure buffer to the end of my pedal board chain.

I have a pedal that’s doing something very similar, I’ve never tried a repair on a pedal before… so mine is making a noise about identical, not the cables or guitar or speakers… definitely the pedal. Here’s the thing, it’s far more noticeable as I turn the gain up. My thought was, oh this is my guitar pickups buzzing? Nope, it’s there if guitar is charged or turned down. Does that sound like your issue? Did the sound seem to worsen if you turned up drive on the pedal? Thanks for the great video upload! Here is a safety tip; though rare in floor units, be careful when touching any electronics as tubes and capacitors can store energy and give quite a zap, even unplugged.
@stephenhookings1985

I once watched someone point at a tall cylindrical component on a high voltage (5000v) board and before he could ask "what's that?" he reached out and touched it. His hair suddenly started to rise off his scalp - matted at different rates (hygiene was not their strong point). He was fortunately flung to the other end of the lab where he lay babbling away in his now soiled pants. After that point he started to listen to the various safety notes and briefings on why high voltage needs to be respected even when switched off. Some folks just cannot be reasoned with.

You should solder a wire between the two ground lugs on the jacks. Never rely on the mechanical connection to the case. Oh, and “solder” has a silent L. 😃
@DavidRavenMoon
@DavidRavenMoon 4 года назад
Zen Pronouncing the L is the British pronunciation. And by the way they also say “inverted commas” for quotation marks, because I guess they aren’t quoting someone? So give it a rest about the US education system, since we invented most of this stuff anyway, right?

Shane your pronunciation is correct. The "L" is not silent in "Solder" or "soldering". The English say it correctly too. The Americans for some reason drop the "L". "I'm going to go home now and do some sodering" To me this sounds like some kind of weird sex act.
@jasong546
@jasong546 4 года назад
That sentence, with only soldering being changed, is not something you would hear. Don’t the English say something like “sod off?” Or “you sodding idiot?” Or just in movies? Since you mentioned sex I mean. When I was at R.A.F. Mildenhall no one said any swear or dirty words, very proper.👍
