This was a pretty bad mud spot. In today's video we will get it all fixed
back up so track is in fairly good shape and safer for trains to run on.

It is like those electric tools review videos where you go to see and hear how it is working, and they put this bad music, so you cannot hear what is happening.

No music Dave, the machinery and your calm, steady & enthusiastic voice are music to our ears. Looks like the hillside runoff without additional drainage keeps everything under the ballast wet & the rock just gets pushed down deeper & deeper while the mud rises. A little coal dust can turn a lotta mud all black.

Hi Dave, Always enjoy you videos. (Not a fan of the music when talking.) When I started in the railways over here in Victoria, Australia we used Electromatic Tampers, these were replaced with Plasser Tampers, both were difficult to maintain and needed a high level of mechanical skill. Eventually we changed to the 6700s, they were much cheaper to purchase but also much easier and to use and maintain. I have retired now but never thought of using the switch function on the 6700 to push muddy ballast out of the tie end cribs. Good work. Cheers Pete.

Hi Dave! Great job on dealing with the mud! Tough battle, especially this time of the year. Per your request, on the music, it it ok, just a wee bit loud as it wants to drown out your voice when you're talking. well Dave coal, is graphite in it’s basic form. graphite is a great dry lubricant , the fines are nasty with water. 💧 they do not realize water acts like oil in some cases. what a great difference having that fresh rock in place. that will help to keep things well drained and dry. the drier the ties, the better locked into place, allowing the tamper to stabilize the track sections. at the same time allowing any rain water to easily drain.preventing a mess. oh and of course graphite is used in pencils ! stay safe, and keep up the great work! Thank you Dave!
@ccrx6700

Boy, I wish you had a YouTubing counterpart on the Black Mesa & Lake Powell Railroad here in Northern Arizona. Unfortunately, it quit operations in 2019, but it was in many ways similar to your railroad there...except in a very much dryer locale. Their run was 78-miles from mine to power plant and on normal days they ran 3 round trips. Wikipedia says that their hopper cars (mostly the same rapid discharge cars you guys run) ran an average of 400-miles per day. And I think they also had a jointed rail system. Now, their trains were electric powered, and they ran between 70-80-cars on most normal trains, with usually 4 locomotives on the headend only, but with loops at either end of the line. And they were 100% landlocked too. Watching this tonight, I had the thought about how different things would be for you if your railroad was in a much dryer place like here in AZ, then I thought about the BM&LP and how they are pretty similar to your road. I'm sure they had a problem with fines too, since their hoppers were run constantly and rolled up many miles. But the BM&LP didn't have the hard curvature as your road. Anyway, my curiosity was just speaking out load through my keyboard. Cheers, Dave! 🤠👍

The wet weather we have is hard on track when the ballast is all plugged up with coal and the water can't drain away as you well know Scotty. Coal is not that bad in the ballast until it rains, so perhaps being in a much drier climate would be a big help to us, but would be a bit hard to move out there at this point.....LOL Glad you could stop by and take in the fixing a mud spot show my friend.

It's a slow and steady process and the result is very good :) That mud is just nasty stuff :) We can't have sliding track otherwise there might be a derailment. Excellent explanation! I going to check out #3 limestone and see what makes it good for ballast :)
@ccrx6700
@ccrx6700 6 месяцев назад
Sliding track is not good for sure Brian. Thank you for the nice comment and for taking the time to watch my friend. #3 makes for good ballast because of it's size. It locks in to the ties well and also is good for drainage.
