MDF and chipboard are handy for many things but asking them to span 1m without support is too much. Here, I attempt to rectify the sag that's befallen a wall unit in my kitchen.

Ripping with a hand saw! Very impressed!

A brand-new saw would've helped to make it easier. It took far longer to complete the cut than my video shows. ;-)

another way is to insert 2" x 12" boards between the cabinet dividers. jack up the cabinets. then secure the 2 x 12 to the wall, then secure the cabinet to the 2 x 12. this will hold up the cabinet. put in a few 2 x 12s to raise the whole cabinet.

Thanks for your comment and for sharing. Yep, that would also work well. Maybe even a stronger fix than my own.

Nicely done. Did you have look to see how easy it would have been to remove the unit from the wall? I'd definitely want to put some additional support under the sink unit, where the heater sits and it shouldn't be any harder than cutting some wooden supports, that will slightly raise the level back to where it should be. Good luck.

Mark Garth Hi Mark, thanks for watching and for your comment.I did and I'm still not certain on how they're fixed to the wall - all I'm sure of is that the level of craftsmanship generally was LOW (to put it politely) during the installation! It was also entirely likely that this wide unit was also fixed to the narrower units either side, with screws hidden behind the hinges.Thanks, I had an idea to make some large folding wedges but I'm also toying with the idea of making a kind of 'jack' using some wood, a long bolt, some nuts and washers... ;-)

hmm, what prevents the bottom shelf from just ripping itself free downwards under the weight though?

My problem is the shelves inside the cabinet. 19 here, new to fixing shit.
@OllyParryJones
@OllyParryJones 4 года назад
So, the shelves inside are sagging? The same approach could help. It may even be easier to achieve if you can take them out. Thanks for watching.

I did not take it from his website, and I highly suspect he only hands a restricted quantity of copies, however i have Hyezmar’s woodworking plans and I’m happy I googled him :)

Hey dude, interesting video. So, thickness (by adding another MDF sheet) should prevent the sagging? I've been searching on youtube about this issue and your video is the best I found. U said u were looking online for solutions, would u please share some links u found? Thanks a lot.
@OllyParryJones
@OllyParryJones 4 года назад
Thanks for watching and for your comment. The original idea came from a forum I found (text only, no photos). It was hard to find at the time and I can't see it right now. But yes, doubling up the thickness seems to help. As would fitting a plinth or similar underneath. Mine was still sagging afterwards but only half as much. I hope this helps and good luck.

What would you recommend for sagging book case shelves. These are the cheaper made bookcases but they all sag in the middle with to many books on them. Not sure if 2x2 furring strips would work. Not sure what to do about them.
@OllyParryJones
@OllyParryJones 7 лет назад
What size is your bookcase? I'd probably look at fixing 2x1 or similar to the front edge of each shelf, like a face frame. I think you'd also need to strengthen the back edges - either by screwing through a back panel or another face frame. I hope this helps.

@OllyParryJones
@OllyParryJones 9 лет назад
Will Ford Good eyes, thanks Will! Erm, one's a Yamaha that was given to me; the white one is branded 'Encore' and cost only £30... I had the intention of stripping it apart to replace the body and then the neck but as I'm currently without a workshop, I'm instead looking towards learning to actually play one of them - any suggestions welcome?
@willford8475
@willford8475 9 лет назад
Olly Parry-Jones Hi Olly, I've spent quite a lot of time looking at Guitar Projects on Ebay - to be honest I would make my own body (the easy bit) but would probably have a neck made professionally, Warmoth, Uniparts etc. When things are tough - don't worry they will get better! Do you follow Ben Crowe on the Crimson Guitar channel? He's an interesting guy. All the best. I'm in southern Spain, weather is warming up 25C today. Good Luck.
@OllyParryJones
@OllyParryJones 9 лет назад
Will Ford Hi Will, I can understand that. When I did look in to how necks are made and their function in the finished guitar, I found it quite an daunting thought to make my own. Thanks, I try to hold on to the simple belief that I will 'one day' have another workshop. The 'when' and 'how' aren't important right now, they only add to the worry. Yes, I do also subscribe to Ben and I quite agree. If I had guitar-making experience behind me, I might well have applied for the job he was offering a few months ago, as I think he's only a couple of hours south from me. 25°C... Well, today, I'm sure we'll have more than 25mm or rain and the winds seem close to 250mph! But I don't envy you one bit... ;-) It has been getting warmer here in the last fortnight. There's even talk of a 'heatwave' for Easter...

Get some 3/4" plywood and build some new ones. They look like junk cabinets.
@OllyParryJones
@OllyParryJones 9 лет назад
Backyard Woodworking Absolutely, it's a tragedy that trees were probably torn down to produce items like this but it's typical of what's available at the lower end of the market in the UK. If I was the home-owner then, absolutely, they'd be gone and this video would've been a little different! ;-) Thanks for watching, as always.
@OllyParryJones
@OllyParryJones 9 лет назад
***** That's a very good point. Re-building such cabinets from cheaper materials, but with greater structural integrity/reinforcement, would probably be the best option.
@OllyParryJones
@OllyParryJones 9 лет назад
***** I must admit, I'm always staggered by the amount of plywood some woodworkers across the Atlantic will use. Where as, the rest of us have to think twice before even purchasing a single sheet. As you suggest; it must be cheaper in the US and Canada, by way of comparison.
