For videos yes because the monitors would bleed through the mic for my voice. Normally I just use my headphones for reference

The LUFS should be around -14 and the True Peak needs to stay below -1.0 db. Otherwise your music will lose dynamics and be squashed/limited when uploaded to a streaming platform. Mastering to 0.1 is a thing of the past and leaves no headroom for the peaks. A 0.9 db difference on the master is nearly negligible anyway. There is no need to compress and limit your music to the max to ‘compete with other releases’.

Of course when uploading to streaming platforms, I adjust as necessary as mentioned. For my beat uploads , they aren’t going on streaming platforms so I’ve had no issues with staying around a higher lufs.

@@LifeStyleDidIt You did mention it, but I wanted to reiterate the consequences. Yeah there's no issue if it's on your own website other than inevitability losing a lot of dynamic range of course and possibly blowing someone's speakers if their volume is too loud lol. A well mixed beat with proper streaming levels will sound good on any device or platform, but an overly maximized one will not. I personally stay at approximately -13 LUFS and -1.1 dB.

@@ChillCash He's fixing a beat. Probably headed for the beat selling market, where the preview needs to compete with other beats that are mixed to -.1. Different than other markets for sure.

@@erickanderson2241 Yeah I gathered that from the title. Just to let you know, RU-vid itself is the biggest beat selling market of them all where many people advertise their music. There is a loudness normalization standard. The true peak needs to be below -1.0 dB. Plus, 1 decibel is not going to make much of difference and will not make the music any more or less competitive. Having your signal too high on the other hand will cause clipping, particularly during the conversion and encoding process.

Hi! One question about LUFS, if RU-vid recommands -14LUFS, does our mix have to be exactly at -14 ? Or is -10 fine too, what are your thoughts on that? (will it be too compressed?) Thanks :)

How do you decide which EQ plugin to use for certain situations? Fruity EQ vs Q10 vs LineEq?

Honestly if I'm not reaching for a certain EQ for "color" or hardware emulations, etc, I will use whatever is close haha. Except the Linear EQ, that was used on purpose for the master bus to keep phase shifting from happening

I get so hopeful in my own mixes when I watch these then I go to try to fix my mixes and they sound like garbage and I literally mix with the same headphones you got I don’t understand!😕 it’s so aggravating I wish I knew how to mix as good as you. Great video man I hope to have the mixing skills you have one day. I been reading books and everything I just still struggle a lot.

Can you go into more depth on gainstaging? So when you were lowering the volume through the channel rack, did you lower the volume until the dB turned green or is it more of a preference/hearing thing. Also do you recommend grain staging before mixing 💀

when you gain stage you turn it down in the channel rack so your not sending a clipped signal into the mixer then just turning down a clipped signal because it won’t sound as good. you should gain stage so you have headroom in the mix so you can turn sounds up or down without having a clipped signal. if that makes sense

Was being lazy haha, if I needed a quick EQ move I would grab the closest one. Sometimes I’ll just use the EQ at the bottom of the mixer as well

I never know whether to keep all my levels low and mix to bring them up or opposite and I also never know if I should use the fader on the mixer to adjust levels or volume on the audio file or vst volume

I’ve had people tell me most kicks and 808s in kits nowadays are already in mono, is it necessary to put them in mono again or will that mess them up?

90% of more are, yes. It is habit for me, but no it will do no harm, a mono signal will stay mono and not change if you put it in "mono" again haha. Sometimes a kick or sub bass will have cool stereo information in which I'd keep stereo, but almost all my beats I'm going mono. BUT many of my trapsoul beats I like to use sub basses with stereo imagery so I let them be stereo

ShayD Beats for the master bus, its common for a linear phase EQ to be used for phase related issues that a normal EQ can cause. Although, using a linear EQ on every mixer track is not common due to how much cpu it would take and the small delay it adds that can offset a signal

So best bet, when doing master bus EQ, I would recommend using a linear phase eq.
