Great video. Super editing. Thanks for sharing. Giving me the confidence to replace my belts. Will be ordering a pick tool and tweezers. I’ll be marking the old belt mind, lord knows how you didn’t mix them up 😂

The nicer Technics tape decks were really cool. Nice looking gadgets and had really, really great sound for such a limited format. It's almost a shame that the format is totally obsolete :)

For speed adjustment I just time a song compared to what a CD player displays as the running time, works pretty well.

i feel this.. during 90;s i was at highschool age, i started opening a cassete player, the only thing that started me diong this is that before, our cassete has cobwebs and dead insect cockroach inside. so i had to clean it.. and i saw a rubber loosen. and that started me to fix it.

Test tapes are the only way to critical adjust tape transport speed.

Colossal pain in the ass, belt replacement on some of these Technics. I swapped mine out last year, and it’s been mostly fine. Record side is great, no issues. Playback was fine too, at first, but seems slightly slow lately. Almost comes to a stop on the tail end of a rewind sometimes, but fast forwards completely fine. It would occasionally try to eat a tape on the playback side, especially when recording. I can record from other sources, but not from other cassettes anymore. Zero activity on the level meter once I hit record/play on the record side. I’m dreading messing with the belts again, but I’m not 100% sure that’s the issue I’m having. Something has to be hanging up somewhere.

The tape transport being slow would usually be an idler issue, some tape decks have an idler tire that sits on a third motor which is placed between the take up and supply reel. They get dried out the same way belts do, and start to slip, especially when more tape is on the reel its trying to move. They are a huge pain to replace, the most successful ones I've ever done were on Nakamichi Decks because they are easier to work on. As for the inability to record from one deck to the other, definitely a circuit problem, though I don't know where that would be affected.

Where do you get your assorted belts from? I'm a little skeptical of ordering those big batches from China on eBay and getting a quality product.

Honestly it depends, I tend to find most of the assorted belts on ebay and sometimes they come from China, Europe, or US sellers, but no matter where I've purchased from I haven't had an issue with sizing or quality so far. For specific belts, there's a seller, westcoastbelts.com, ive had good luck with them.

Just yesterday (7/21/22) I replaced the belts on a Technics RS-TR265. Bought new belts online. Once replaced, both decks play only in reverse mode. Forward will only play for a second or two then stops. Any idea what I should be looking for to correct this?

If I remember correctly, I had that same thing happen with one of my decks. Double check the threading of the belt that goes to the two capstans, it may have slipped off when the deck was reassembled. Otherwise, I'm not really sure, but there are a lot of great groups on Facebook with more experienced technicians. Good luck!

These decks also have issues with the tape sensor mechanism getting oxidized. It's one of the metal tabs at the top of the cassette bay. They sense things like tape presence, recording tabs, etc. A dirty tape detector will cause the deck to stop because it thinks there is no cassette in the player. You can gently clean the tab with alcohol or Deoxit. See this vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4e2Jo7Q_LLQ.html
