My LB7 is a CA version with EGR blanketing the passenger valve cover that added a whole new layer (no pun intended) to the lengthy, miserable injector job.😟 While problems with the injector check ball and seat can produce high balance and return rates, usually presenting as long crank times (since the CP3 has difficulty generating minimum rail pressure) I believe the fundamental issue with LB7 injectors was use of VCO nozzles, vs SAC type, which came in with LLY and all later Duramax.The VCO's have a different sealing design and as they wear, eventually begin to dribble, causing coking at the nozzle which results in a poor spray pattern, loss of mpg and smoking at idle. Think about it for a minute: what do high return rates have to do with smoking at idle? High balance rates however, can be a function of nozzle spray pattern and leaking at the tip, which will effect balance rates as the FICM tries to balance cylinders. Of course, whenever LB7 injectors become problematic, it don't make no nevermind what has failed, since they need to be replaced anyway. A/C Delco injector cleaner, directly into the fuel system (not the tank) will buy some time, but once smoking begins (at about 75k intervals) it's downhill from there. Excellent advice on R&R of HP lines. No amount of DIY cleaning will restore them, and it's the micron level (almost invisible) particulates that can act like grinding paste inside injectors. I see you pried off the upper valve cover. Another way is a block of wood and a 5# hammer, beginning at the top of each end. Sounds scary, but the cover will quickly "pop" and come off. We disagree on one important item, however. Why remove the water separator on the fuel filter? 😱😱😱 Dodgy fuel can have water in it and although we all try to buy diesel at busy stations with high turnover, even the best suppliers can inadvertently introduce water into their fuel. And at 25,000 psi, water is a really good cutting product. And don't get me started on corrosion. Stay with the OEM filter! ACD and GM cooperated closely on the design (dual media to prevent loading of the finer filter) following the injector fiasco you mentioned and all Duramax now use that filter (made for them by Racor). Time to get off my soapbox! Thanks for the video 👍👍👍.

Mine is a CA version too. Any tips for the EGR valve & cooler removal? Those bolts attaching the cooler to the exhaust up pipe look like they aren't going to be fun.

@@ki6uve My condolences. It was my experience there was no way to pull the EGR cooler, which I believe must come out for access, except to disconnect the fasteners up against the firewall...you know the ones you can only feel. Soak with PB a few hours. I made 26 pages of notes, step by step during my work and just looked at the EGR cooler page. No frowny emoji, so guess it was not that bad. A lot of items removed to get that cooler out. These engines were obviously assembled outside the truck, with lots of access. In the bay, not so much. Steve sounds like you know how to Diagnose real well, I have a lly that I'm thinking it's a injector issue but before I put 2500$ in injectors in it I'd like to talk to someone with knowledge about symptoms I've had and am having causing it not to be road worthy at the moment.

The little steel lines usually don't have any rust or junk because their constantly under varying pressures. When I remove them I just blast then with brake clean and compressed air b4 reinstallation.

Ok I got a question he said it's hard to start an white smoke this smoke in this video is not much right now my lbz got alot of water an gasoline in the tank an it is ticking but it starts good idles rough an puts out way more grey an dark grey smoke then what's in this video o y'all think it's the injectors or something else not one problem ever untill the water an gasoline an yes I did drain everything an clean an blew out all lines tried unplugging one injector at a time to see if it made a difference an nope it didn't

What torque wrench are they using in this video? I like the beep when it reaches correct torque. Reading reviews on Amazon is mind numbing...was looking for a personal recommendation.

Are you guys working on the wrong side of the engine just because its easier for demonstration purposes or do you not know that cylinders 2 4 6 8 or actual on the driver side of a duramax

It's not a shot gun approach, they new which injectors are bad. The LB7 engines are a pain in the ass to change the injectors for the fact the valve covers have to come off. They explained, why replace one injector only to have another one fail again. All the injectors are from the same build date, why chance it? This is the reason the LLY had a design change which allowed the injectors to be accessed from outside the valve covers. A true shot gun approach is not knowing what failed and throwing parts at it.

This cars the worst I ever worked on. A shop wanted $9,000 to fix the problem. When getting the parts myself, I had to get a CP3, Injectors and its parts and other items. It cost me over 3k in parts to get the car right...and to think, itll only last me 60-90k miles and do it over again... I travel a lot and put 35k per year. Means I will use $3k every 2 years....My car has its injectors changed twice already...and it only has 108k miles.

Get a lift pump like air dog. Has extra filtration which the number 1 problem with why the injectors go bad and takes the strain away from the cp3 pump
