I had a 2001 350 honda quad bike. it was a lot of fun . I had to replace the grips on mine too. I got a set of heated ones from a farm supply store. 3 different heat positions. It was so good in cold wet weather. You didn't even need gloves.
There may or may not be RTV silicone plugging the driveshaft boot of my 4 wheeler... I'll fix it one of these years. Good luck buying a tire machine. I've met carnival workers who were less sketchy that the people I ran into trying to buy a used tire machine.
Rubén Balea Used those split boots quite a lot. If installed correctly, they're just as good as stripping the whole axle down and installing "proper" dust boots. Speaking of which, I've always put gaiters on the forks on my motorbikes to protect them. My new bike has upside down forks and looking at how much I'd have to strip off I thought I would try cutting a gaiter lengthways and gluing it back together. Gaiters are cheap so worth a try. Two years and thousands of miles in all weather the gaiters are still there, no splits. Guess thats my new routine when I change bikes as well as greasing all connectors to make weather proof.
Rubén Balea Always found that good industrial grade superglue is the best, even more so on gaiters that had been split with a knife. Cleanliness is the biggest issue with gluing boots on. I've usually glued them together on the axle, let them dry and then gently work them over the joint before you grease it all up. Must admit the first time I put a split boot on I was very sceptical about it , as long as it allowed the car to pass inspection I could sort it out later. Took another six years before I had to replace it on that car. Used them all the time now when its only the boot thats split.
It is clear that you are a skilled, thorough, careful and knowledgeable mechanic. People who criticize your work methods need to either calm down - or bugger off and watch another channel. On the matter of your crowded shop (...and who doesn’t have one of those), why don’t you build a shelf unit outside (with locks of course) and simply store some your toys on it. After all, you’ve got the forklift to bring stuff down to the ground....
Spanner various. Great tool. Our German Engineer would throw our fitters shifter in the bin and said you never use these pieces of shit on my steam turbines , stop being a lazy ass and get the correct size spanner. Hahaha. Hello from Australia
Really enjoyed this video. I discovered you a couple of months ago and now I’m working my way through your collection on here. Sometimes you remind me of myself in my younger days (I’m in my mid 60s now) except you’re more knowledgeable and have a lot more tools and toys than I had. Looking forward to your next update on the Autocar.
Hair spray works good on those grips Keeps them from moving Spray it on both the inside of the grips an the bars Compressed air works good to get them on
Having the valve core out helps a lot to get more air in and seat the bead for sure. I’ve never used the air nozzle though - just use the chuck and shove it over the valve stem. The stem will press on the valve inside the chuck to open it up and let air flow though. Had to do that plenty of times working in a tire shop.
Matt your crazy when comes to rideing that thing lol . I put a set of those same tires on grizzley . Absolutely fabulous. So you made a good choice there. We also had to them to a tire shop to change the tires out. .
As for breaking the bead on the tyres I have used a jack and the weight of my truck to push down on the side wall until it pops off, works like a charm. For yourself you could probably push down on the side walls with the fork of the forklift even easier than what I do. But yeah a tyre machine probably is the best move for the both of us.
Another nice vid! I like the candor, the screwups, mistakes, frustrations. Refreshing to see on YT. All the jobs I do are the same. Never goes as planned, tools wrong size, blunt, broken, fit not right, parts too expensive. Yup, very familiar.
Next time your breaking a bead, use a T handle spade put point of spade tip on the bead next to rim and jump on the spade both feet, it'll pop it off slick as a whistle.
I usually use the Murphy’s tire lube to mount tires but I’ve used soapy water with good luck before. Just a sponge with dawn dish soap and water. I made it very soapy and only make like 4oz at a time.
Matt: "I wouldn't die from it. It wouldn't feel good, but I wouldn't die." I think you quoted John Wilkes Booth before he jumped from the Presidential box to the stage at Fords theatre in April 1865.😟😰😨😲😂 Can anyone see why the Honda's steering and ball joints get beat up so bad? I really enjoyed this episode Matt and look forward to the next. Give Meatball and Roscoe a milk bone from me. You and yours stay healthy and safe and cheers from this old retired coot living in Tennessee.💖 👍 😷 🍻 ✌
Those tires look really good! And having a forklift at the shop changes your life. I have ran the model AC many years ago. It would pick up a house! Very strong hydraulics. Fantastic video!
If you get an set of Honda grips they just fit tight they don’t use any silicon to stick them on spray a little bit of brake clean to get them on and they slide right on but work fast
When I need to break the bead on a tire, I just deflate the tire and throw it on flat ground. Then take the tractor and run over the side wall of the tire to be broken down. Works for me.
You can tell some of your viewers don't have any idea what you're doing. 40 years ago I used to take my spark plugs in and out with a air impact wrench keep doing what you have to do it's the best that you can do sometime I love your video Tucson
PS can you put your address out again so I can write you a letter you can tell my spelling is not good and it's taking me about 15 minutes to get this portrait make sure you keep up with good video
Don’t you just love it everything is a shelf everything is a shelf every nook and cranny that’s above ground will hold something somewhere at some point in time
Blue silicone? Stuff sucks plus it says duh I worked on it. Permatex Ultra Black all the way! Oh and pickle forks on parts you are reusing is a no no. Just hit the knuckle with a hammer to shock it loose. Leave the nut part way on to protect the threads. Love your channel BTW!
Tip for all press fits if you can (rubber components and other delicate parts may not like) freeze/chill the male parts and heat the females and then when it comes to pressing some will drop straight in no pressure and others it will reduce the force needed significantly
I just spent over $9000 for a Rubicon and I love it. A power washer is a great tool to keep it clean, with a bit of furniture spray on wax all over the plastic, makes for easy clean up too.
In 2017 there were 93,800 ATV injuries treated in emergency rooms in the USA. There are 500-600 ATV fatalities each year in the US. Please wear a helmet.
Ralph in Australia all quad bikes need to be fitted with roll over protection by Oct 2021 and the major manufacturers including Honda have stopped supply because of it. When pocket rocket mini bikes came out they banned those not long after too, are they still legal in US?
@@drunkdunc8738 I don't know about mini bikes, but they are pretty common here, so I guess legal. Lots of dumb crap is legal in the US, because 'freedom' or something. Like straight pipe exhausts and in some states no mandatory helmet law for motorcyclists.
Hey Matt . Can't see an issue using a fork truck to pick the quad bike up . With no stands . It's the beauty of doing stuff for yourself . You have nobody to answer to but yourself . All these safety preachers have no doubt sailed close to the edge on occasion. I'm old and well worn out . My good lady is always saying are you sure you should be doing that . Like that . Then says . Just don't come running to me moaning if you break your legs , haha . Good job I love her .
You know that you can replace torn boot on that cv joint? Dissassemble CV joint, wash it, put new grease, new cv joint boot and it will be peachy? Ofc. before tearing it up all the way in mud and granadeing to bits and pieces ;)
I was thinking the same thing every Honda product that I have owned said to do not screw it all the way in when you are checking the oil . Also I was taught when checking ball joints on cars anyway you put a jack under the lower control arm and take the stain off the ball joint to check . Maybe that is just for cars ?
I am almost done building my mini bike. I need a new cam,rod and springs to finish my stage 2 kit. Soon as I get those installed and tune my carburetor I should be able to hit about 60 top speed.
Lay tire down, let air out, lay a 4 foot length of 2 x 6 or similar on the tire like a ramp up to the rim. Drive up on it with whatever is handy. May take a try or 3 but it has never failed me in 60 years.
I had an old set of truck tires I did that with, used some heavy C channel for a ramp and drove my loaded dump truck on them, still couldn’t break them.... they went to the tire shop lol I think they cut them off
20:40 if you can’t get the bead to seal you can put a ratchet strap on the circumference of the tire and crank it down. That gets the rubber to meet the rim so air can take.
26:43 DC: "That's the best feeling on a project where you have actually like noticeable improvements to what ever it is you're working on.., like so excited to finally finished it, take it out for a spin or whatever it is .., it's a great feeling. To me, the best feeling is finishing a job(keeps my wife quiet) and not having any parts left over, the bonus comes into play when the thing works. Adjustable wrench, Crescent wrench, or as the boys from the UK call it.., a "Shifter" Everybody should have one in their tool box, I have 1 metric and 1 standard size. thanks DC for keeping it real 👍👍👍
My grandpa made a bead breaker out of an axle shaft melted down the tip of it and made a big spoon so it would get under the bead and then put on top a bigger pipe that was thick walled and sled up and down the axle shaft as a giant slide hammer has a grease zerk on top to grease it and I still have it to this day and use it.
Keeping stuff clean can be a real pain but, if I had a pressure washer like yours, the whole neighbourhood would be spotless.😁 There's folk out there in YT-land who would 𝒑𝒂𝒚 to clean that ATW with a pressure washer.😂
Forklift as ATV lift? Looks better than some things I've seen for lifting stuff! Huh! Better than some things I've been under. And sounds like as soon as I started to comment it started to shift. Aghh!
