Fixing eBay Junk - Sega 32x - Disassemble and clean 

There used to be a discount department store called Caldor, which closed around 1999. I remember going in there one time and seeing a shelf with about three dozen of these units on it and they were marked down to $4 apiece. Having already picked one up a couple years earlier for $19.95, I passed on them but should have snapped them up for all the power supplies and hook-up cables alone!

Thanks for making this video. It made opening up and cleaning my "broke" 32x a breeze. Can't test it quite yet as I need the one cable for it coming tomorrow. Hopefully it'll just fire up on the first try after this cleaning cause it was dirty.

Hey, just wanted to say I love that you are restoring history and showing how it's done. I am really thinking of doing the same thing to keep these consoles alive for many more years to come.

Thanks for this guide. I just got a 32X that was a bit dirty and was extremely worried about possibly damaging it & bugs. While this guide didn’t help with the bugs I ran into on the vertical board, this was extremely helpful and now I’m hoping it works. I have yet to test it but I am very confident that it will work

I got a Genesis Model 1 Variation 2, Sega CD 2, 32x, two 3 Button controllers, and a Genesis 2 recently in one sale for 200$ from a local Ma & Pa shop. I'm in the the process of restoring them to there former glory. It's a yucky job but it's worth the effort!

@17:10, haha! I was about to suggest that. I've saved my headlight lenses using that stuff, I plan on using it on my Xbox One and PS4 cases next chance I get. And it's dirt cheap, just $8 a bottle.

Only console add-on I'm still waiting on getting. I have a Saturn Dreamcast and CD just need the 32x. Oh and i have two Nomads. Awesome repair guide RetroRepairs!

I think it was the ribbon cables for me. Thanks for the video, I was able to easily take my 32X apart and put it back together, and it's working flawlessly now. ^_^

You need a dremmel. The bits are excellent for trimming and refining plastic. For buffing there are little buffing wheels. They would make short work of polishing and buffing glossy plastic. Look up: Dremel cloth buffing wheel.

you should try a pencil eraser on those pins cleans them real good

I wonder if the person you bought this from on ebay will see this video if they do i bet they will feel stupid for selling the 32x to you for such a cheap price or they are just to lazy to even clean it the loss is there and all yours to gain i just love people taking apart old consoles and cleaning them so satisfying great video

sometimes, when they track down issues and their causes during development, they create a wire 'bodge' to simulate a new circuit pathway. most of the time, it's just cheaper to put a few bodges in rather than redesign and print new boards

The bulk of the “processing” is clearly done in the bottom, not the top, since the bottom is literally where the Hitachi processors and other custom chips are. That’s why you have all those ribbons connecting the all the AV and cart stuff to the lower part. The top is bigger because it has to physically accommodate a female cartridge slot, two AV ports, power jack, power circuitry, and whatever it takes to lock on to the attached console’s video signal. From there it is all handled below.

Just replaced the av out port on a 32x I bought. Hoping to pick up some cables for it soon and test it. Bought the part from console5

Do things you just have, every new console you get, is a new case for a video in my mind. Even Consoles/handhelds you already repaired on video. I love all the videos you do. Ofc i would like to see even other stuff you didnt already had. Do you know how to mod consoles? Like getting a s-video out on genesis ect.? This would be nice videos as well. But i would watch even the 10`s time you fix another snes console. I dont remember you ever fixed a gamecube or n64 before. Nevermind, i would like to have more videos about fixing stuff ^^ Keep on repairing the good stuff.

Man in 08 I bought a 32x complete in box(even with the original game coupons inside) for like 30$ then in like 2010 I sold it for like 65$ and now for some reason a unboxed one with no attachments is hard to find for like 70$ :/

Great video! Just picked up a non working 32x for cheap so hoping I can fix it. Does the 32x have screws other than Philips head anywhere, like security screws or triwing? OR can you completely disassemble with just regular screw drivers?

What is a good price? I'd like to try my chance at getting lucky on a dirty one.

Would you know why when i play regular genesis games through the 32x I get weird colors? One time i get shades of all blue and another time I got shades of all red.

Honestly, most 32x add ones freeze after about 4 or 5 minutes of play. It's not a pin cleaning issue, not sure what it is

How much would you charge me for replacing the housing shell on a psp 1000. I got my psp at launch back in 2004. I took great care of it until my son got his hands on it and almost destroyed it. It works great but its scratched up and the umd door is broken. I will buy a new housing case for it. If you would help me i wiil sent you my psp with rhe case and pay you. Please let me know.

I'm having an issue with a Genesis game, and I was wondering if you could help me out. So I just bought Sonic & Knuckles online, and just got it in the mail. Putting it into my Model 1 Genesis (which does work just fine with all my other games), I got no picture or anything. I messed around with the cart for a little bit, and figured out that the game would load if I pushed the cart back. However, once I stop pushing it back, the game will hard crash and the Genesis needs to be turned off. Would this be an issue with the cart's contact points, and how hard is it to repair?

I haven’t noticed it in this one but in your previous video(s) there were a few moments when your footage would end like immediately after you finish speaking and then the next scene would start just after that, and it honestly feels like very rough transition. And there was also a similar moment but of instead of just unexpectedly ending it would start fading while you still speak. It’s not crucial, your videos are still pretty interesting to watch i am just giving some feedback you might find useful. I would personally just ditch unnecessary fading and leave a short pause before switching scenes, it would seem much more organic.

My Sega genesis model 2 has spaced vertical lines down the screen on dark scenes using composite are those jailbars and is there a way to reduce it?

There was no reason to take apart the cartridge doors. Since you had confirmed the unit working you only needed to clean the cart contacts and perhaps the contacts that enter the Genesis...and none of that requires tearing the whole thing down. Most of this work was a waste of time and a risk of potential unnecessary damage.

Why do is there two names for the sega ‘genesis’ or ‘mega drive’

Does anyone know of a way to protect the 32x from static shock? I can’t find the shields that go in the cartridge slot any where so I thought maybe a ground wire soldered to the metal plates at the bottom of the 32x might work.

try moving the system outta the way of your tv,so we can see it maybe?????? just a thought.......
