We’ve run a lot of poly through the years on shanks and in the chutes on peanut pickers. The poly got more and more expensive until it was cheaper to replace the entire metal chute on the peanut picker than it was to put poly liner in it. They no longer offer a poly sleeve for these particular shanks. I would have preferred to install them over removing/welding 5+ hours/ re-installing all these shanks.
I know that adding that hard servicing to materials like that helps to extend the life of the parts. I've never actually seen it up close, but I've known of farmers who did it over the years. I think most people don't understand or imagine how much of an abrasive action there is on those surfaces. Of course, a lot of that depends on the type of soil. Good video...
If there was enough artifacts in the ground to wear out a subsoiler I wouldn’t be able to do any farming. My middle child had already recommended I quit farming and become full time archaeologist.
