Late to the party here. That was definitely one of my favorite videos. I love seeing how the designers basically did computer programming (if/then/else) logic using analog switches and motors. There was some high-level thinking going on there. Thanks, Ron, for walking us through it in detail. I enjoyed every minute of the explanation.

This is Ron Lyons at his best! How someone could explain the workings of how this machine counts runs, make it not only make perfect sense, but also be entertaining! Is unreal. I was never a fan of E. M. machines, but now I am awed by them.

I get this sneaking feeling that if I had made that machine, I would have been a devious cad and labelled the 3 bases "Who, what, I don't know." And if there is a sticker for the pitcher, he's, naturally, "Naturally". I would have put it all in the service manual, but I would have made it more complicated to think about for sure, just for the luls thinking of someone figuring it out for the first time. 😂
@ballsrgrossnugly

@Cold Snap I misremembered? Who was naturally then? I thought Tomorrow was the catcher or outfield or something! I'll have to watch it again! It's been a few years! I do recall the shortstop was "I don't give a darn"

This is one of my favorite series so far. This game is so cool, I mostly work on 80's pins and thought EM games are just switches and score reels, the ball wonders around without any particular goal, just to hit points. Well this is something else tho... The logic and complexity of this makes me absolutely crazy, this is like a mini computer logic with all of that stuff. Getting to like EM games, maybe I'll get one someday. Nice vid!

I remember playing one of the baseball games back in the mid 70s and hating it - those outlanes are vicious! I didn't understand baseball rules back then (still don't), so didn't appreciate that it was doing some funky calculations on the bases. I certainly appreciate it now though!

Wow. Fantastic trouble shooting Ronnie. … pinball does baseball. … All em pinball machines are an electro-mechanical computer. …. this machine really highlights that, as most folks understand the rules of baseball. … great detective work on the stepper unit, and real useful to me. …. I have a machine behaving in the same way (too much pull). ….. what a jewel this game is. Better get warmed up Ronnie. I think you’ll have lots of fun on this. You hit a home run with this video. Well done.

When I was growing up in the Detroit area, Canadian coins were always mixed in. Maybe 5-10% of the time. It was a lot easier to cross the border then and Canadians coming over for cigarettes was common. The coin sizes were (are?) close enough to be a problem in vending machines. Of course the bank won't take them but stores wouldn't think twice about giving them as change even though the value was never the same.
@ericbentsen1785
@ericbentsen1785 2 года назад
Canadian coins would just come back through the coin return, but occasionally some magnet in the coin return would latch onto the coin and jam up the coin mechanism.

JOE, The baseball "Step Unit" it like a Score motor because it has its down thought process and decision making? I think the Step Unit is in relations with the Latch Relays called Single Relay, Double Relay, Triple Relay, which they are latch relays that are in a closed loop operation with the Step Unit?

"Add-a-ball isn't gambling" - Not sure if you're old enough to remember some of SC's stranger blue laws. I worked at a Winn-Dixie as a teen, and we could sell film but not flashbulbs. And we were only allowed four employees on Sundays, so the lines were all the way back to the meat counter.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 2 года назад
That's funny stuff. I first started working in the 90's so I saw a litttttle bit of that stuff but not any of that. I do know, though, that an operator explained to me that he put Bingo machines out on location (the ones with all the holes, that were straight gambling devices) and they told him that he could only operate flipper machines, so he literally added 1 flipper to all of his bingo games. I used to work at Winn-Dixie too in the early 90's, I loved it, but I was a teenager so it's probably a good job for a teenager at least.

Shouldn't there be an upright pin above the outlane metal bar on each side? It would help with letting the ball decide which lane to go down. Thanks for the video. I used to play machines like this, including this one, back in the day. It's become obvious 2 years of electronics engineering in college was not enough to learn pinball schematics though. They don't focus on pinball schematics anyway, maybe that's why.

Here, in Michigan, many places will not expect Canadian currency because the Canadian dollar is most often of less value than our dollar. I believe the coins also a different weigh so our vending machines don’t like them.🤷‍♂️

It seems like they could have come up with a score motor-like mechanical unit that physically emulated the 4 bases... on a single it does a 1/4 turn, double a 1/2 turn, etc., with little snap-up units where there's a 'man on base' and down when there's not ... maybe easier to understand .... but more expensive to manufacture.
