This video shows how I fixed my KENMORE Washer (Model: 796.40021900) - saving myself a very good amount of money not calling for a service man - they gave me an estimate of a few hundred dollars to fix it!!!
The new part cost me $26.53 (plus $7.99 shipping). I could have been able to get it twice as cheap on eBay but decided to order from the manufacturer directly to make sure the part is 100% fine.
You are looking to order Part#: 6501KW2001A (Washer Motor Rotor Position Sensor). But please check the manual and the web site for your washer model to make sure you are ordering a proper part.
Make sure you disconnect the electricity prior doing the fix!!!
Good luck! :)

6 years after this clip was posted and it’s still super useful. Thank you so much for the help! Overloaded my washer like an idiot…. Got the LE error…. Opened the back up to check out the belt. There’s no belt inside. Quick search. found this clip. Ordered part. 15 minute fix! So pleased. Thanks again!

Thanks dude. I replaced the motor rotor last year and figured the machine didn't know where the drum was. I could turn over the drum while the machine was on using a ratchet, and the machine would turn for a short while and quit. Perfect!

Thanks so much for posting! So far so good. Washer was only out of commission for a couple days thanks to your video and quick Amazon delivery. I don’t want to make this too long but just want to mention that my washer had a slightly different part number and one a couple sites I went to were saying it would not be compatible. My advice to others is just to get the part number on the part itself and go for it.

Thanks! Worked perfectly. There's a reason this video has so many views. Things I learned: The center bolt everyone talks about had locktite on my Kenmore Elite. It took a wrench and a hammer for me to get it loose, and even then it fought coming out the whole way. The hubcap like cover is held on by a ring of magnets, so you're fighting more than just that central gear holding it in. Pulling while wiggling got it loose. The several screws inside were also locked into place, but once snapped loose came out easily. Putting everything back together was the easiest part of the whole thing.
@tetmax
@tetmax 3 года назад
Thank you for watching and sharing some tips on the process, Ethan! Many people who comment had problems with the area of taking it apart, so your input will be much helpful for those who are in the beginning of the fix!
@Entity_Absent

Same experience with the bolt, thanks for giving me the courage to really torque it! Another thing I noticed with the elite is that the wiring harness is screwed down really close to the rotor. I took out a few of the harness restraints and it really helped when I removed the rotor, it didn't have to hang from the wiring. Those connectors were really stubborn, and having 2 hands free to unhook them was helpful.

Ethan, I just fixed my Kenmore Elite with the same problem. Thanks for mentioning the magnets around the cover. I learned from another video you need a 17 mm socket to remove that bolt, and a 10 mm socket for the screws under/inside the hubcap.

Hey Gary. Thank you for letting me know. Glad it worked for you. I also bought mine in 2010. I disconnect it out of outlet now though, when not using it, as I feel having it plugged in makes the electronic go crazy even when it is turned off. If you notice any strange behavior with your washer that is my advice - to not have it plugged in the outlet unless using it. :)

Awesom video once I muted the song. The only difference between the video and my Kenmore was the bolt was incredibly tight and hard to loosen and others should know the motor cover is lined with large magnets so it is a bear to pull off. I used the old school pounding method to jiggle the magnets loose.

Max, thanks for the info. I purchased the sensor 6501KW2002A for $13 and it arrived the next day. It took 30-55 minutes to do this repair, and it fixed the problem. More details for others: I have an 8 year old Kenmore model 796.4138 washing machine. Two years ago I had an appliance repair company replace the Stator assembly and got the same LE error at the time. The repair including the stator and sensor, together called the stator assembly cost about $300 with parts and labor. What I have deduced after talking with a couple of people is the Stator assembly, which consists of 2 parts the Stator (big coil of wire on plastic wheel) and the sensor 6501KW2002A are typically replaced together because there is no way for the repair technician to test and positively confirm the $13 sensor is bad when he is in the field. And because they have to remove the stator anyway to get access to the sensor, the techs are forced to replace both the Stator and sensor together. There is very little that can go wrong with the stator, it's just a coil of wire which connects to a wiring harness which connects to the circuit board. The tech I talked to this weekend said he replaces the stator assembly regularly but the sensor is the bad component. The difference in material is $13 for the sensor and $200-300 for the Stator Assembly. Labor to replace either one is exactly the same. This tech said he never orders a sensor by itself and he only gave up the info after I probed him with facts and details. If you get the LE error I Highly Recommend this part and the less than hour to replace. Frankly, I'm going to buy a spare so I have this sensor for the future.

Hi Max... Thanks for making this video. I had followed a few other troubleshooting videos that gave me some direction on where to start looking for the issue that was causing the LE error. By testing and process of elimination it seemed like the position sensor was the issue. I called a parts store and ordered the part... When it arrived it was the same part number that you showed in the video. Anyway I changed and voila, it is working now. Thanks so much and wanted to let you know that you helped this household. My wife is very happy that it is fixed!

@@tetmax Do you have any idea what would cause the sensor to fail in the first place?
@tetmax
@tetmax 3 года назад
I have 2 possible ideas. The first - might be a flaw in the electronics design that make the sensor go bad in so many customer cases. The Second - Bad electricity wiring/settings in your/my house when the voltage fluctuates beyond safe boundaries and again the electronics design flaw is not protecting against it. To be safe I now have the washer plugged into the outlet through a Grounded Outlet Plug Adapter with a turn on/off switch. I turn off the electricity off after each wash so the machine is not plugged in when not working. I also brought an electrician to check the amount of voltage coming into my house and they did admit it was 124V instead of 120V. It is a bit high but within the allowed boundaries. But since I do think the washer electronics has a design flaw I keep it unplugged when not in use.

Hello dear, thanks for this interesting video but I have a question, my LG washing machine gives LE error not for all modes, on the 13 mins rinse mode it will work normally. For every mode that includes washing and needs to take washing powder it will give the error and not work. Might it be a clog in the passage of water from the powder position that prevents water from going to the water jar? is this also a reason for that and I need to replace the position sensor or it is another case? I mean it should give this error on all washing modes before replacing this position sensor? I hope you reply me.

But this method was used on small areas and without any rust - just metal underneath. Not sure how it is going to work on rusty areas. Max, I have a Kenmore model 796.4138 and got the same LE error 2 years ago. The local repair company diagnosed the Motor Stator Assembly, which as you know is the round plastic/cooper unit. And, they replaced the entire assembly which came with the $10 sensor premounted on the assemble. So, here we are 2 yrs later and I'm getting the same LE error and same behavior. So, I purchased the sensor you recommended below which delivers from Amazon tomorrow and will try the swap. However, in your experience do you see the wiring harness or assembly coil ever failing?? I'm guessing the repair company took the easy route and replaced the entire assembly which cost $200-300 parts/labor vs. just doing the sensor for $10 + labor. Thoughts?
@tetmax
@tetmax 7 месяцев назад
Hey John! I am not a technician, just a person owning the washer. I own and use it for 14 years. During that time I replaced the sensor 2 times (the first time is shown in this video) and also replaced a power plate that I also filmed last year but not uploaded yet. Other than those repairs, it was working fine. The only thing that I did some time ago was I started using a power switch that I turn on only during the wash time. So, the washer (unlike the dryer of the same model) stays disconnected from the power source when not in use. I think this washer model (even when off) is still getting electric flow when the power cable is connected and that makes the sensor and other electronic inside to go bad. As for repair companies I think (like with auto mechanics) most of them will do whatever is easier or more profitable for them without caring about your money. Of course it does not mean it was your particular case. It is still possible they fixed the part that was really broken. Hope your Amazon sensor replacement will work for you!

Max, you can read my reply above to the sensor vs Stator assembly replacement above. But wanted to expand on the power switch comment you made. So I talked to a tech and he said very good concept and makes sense in many situations. However, with the Kenmores he said the stator is a brushless DC (direct current) design and not suspetial to the variations in AC power. Also, there is a capacitor that blocks and filters the power, protecting the circuit board and sensor, something you only get with a high quality product. Regardless, I like the idea. Also this tech said the 2 most common issues with the Kenmores is #1 Stator Assembly with sensor the real problem and the pump because nobody ever cleans the pump filter. So, my wife and I laughed, checked our pump filter (on bottom left of washer) and it was about 30-40% plugged after 8 years. The tech said this will make the pump run harder and longer to pump the required amount of water and therefore fail faster. Check your filter!!! Thanks for creating such a great post!!! @@tetmax

Hey John! Thanks for the info. I do check the filter once in a while. I also had a problem with Noise Filter Assembly recently. Just posted a video about it a few days ago. @tetmax
@tetmax Год назад
Hello Sergio! Thanks for visiting! I suspect yes, but do not know the answer to your question for sure, because I am not professional and simply share my experience on YT. If it was me, I would search the answer on the Internet and if I did not find any answer, I would open Kenmore 796 and check the sensor inside there, then would order that exact sensor (or analog - they have catalogs at Sears Parts for example where they say which parts can work for which model). Then I would install the sensor and saw if that worked. This way I would lose $7-10 for the sensor if it does not work, but would save tons of money if that worked. )))

Good evening Max. I am getting the LE error code on our washer that is similar to yours. I can start a wash cycle and the drum turns in one direction but won't turn in the opposite direction. It seems a though there is a motor lock issue. Is this the same behavior you were seeing with your machine? Could the rotor position sensor be the issue in my case?
@tetmax
@tetmax 5 лет назад
Hello cwsrad . It started similar way in my case. After rebooting (turning off/on once or several times) it would eventually go through the cycle, but soon it stopped going through and was getting stuck in one position. After doing a research it was obvious that fixing it through the Sears would cost me nearly the same amount of money as buying a new washer, so I decided to give it a shot and replace the part myself - the part I listed in the description. If you decide to go the same path wish you luck in fixing your washer. :)

It depends on why it is stuck. If it is due to rust some anti rust sprays can help if it is due to being screwed extra tight need to get a good grip and hold tight the motor to unscrew it. In any case hope you will be able to handle it!

Hello Ross. Yeah well, I have a wm0642hw and it turned out the problem was the braided anti leak stainless steel hoses, these evident have some kind of valve in them and the water pressure in my house stopped the hose up.. same 1E, lE error.. figured this out after having swapped out the sensor. Swapped in rubber supply hoses and I was good to go.

Unfortunately, there is no unique way to do it properly. I am going to release a new video where I came up with my way of loosening a bathtub drain nut. But that method will not work for you. You need to fix the drum and not break or damage any part of it. Go to a hardware store and ask for any spray that will help loosing the nut and try to use chemicals first. If that won't solve it then look for a way to fixate the drum without damaging it. Good luck!

@@tetmax thanks for your reply. I did mistype. At 1:49 in the video, you are removing the driver motor. Are you using socket or nut driver with your drill to remove the nut? @Senthil Sabesan. I used a socket. I do not remember the exact figure but I do think it was 10mm one. The nuts on the video were rust free and they removed pretty easily but I definitely can relate to your problem and would recommend you a trick I came up with and used many times with a great success. You need to reduce the drill resistance setting by moving the clutch to a lower gear position. When you find 'the borderline' clutch position (it's when the drill starts applying enough pressure to turn the nut a little bit and then go into a few skipping cycles) the nut will start moving. Hope this works for you and the nuts will be removed fine. Good luck!

Mine was not that old or rusty but still a hard one to do as I remember. I used regular wrench as seen on the video. Just did a very short - sudden effort on it to start it moving. May be you can put some oil or WD-40 or any other thing on it for a while to make it more yielding.

Thanks for your replay Max. I finally got it loose and my washer is working nicely now. Items tried: 1) Put few drops of PB Blaster on the bolt mating surface, let it soak 30 minutes and then used my air compressor impact wrench ... surprisingly no luck. But, my compressor is small and only get about 70 lbs of torque, 2) Put a 20" steel tube over my socket wrench for more leverage. I held the drum in place and my wife used the wrench and broke the bolt lose! Dried Locktite was on the threads. Put one drop on threads near bolt head when reinstalling.

Thanks for visiting, John! You need to look at your particular washer code list to determine the possible reasons for the code appearing on your model. If you are not sure what to do you need to bring a trained technician to fix it. In my case it was the the position sensor. But again I could have been wrong replacing it and I knew there was a chance me loosing the little money I spent for the sensor comparing to spending 10 times more just to bring a technician in to take a look! I did all this exactly... error went away but now it's making a noise like grinding/dragging did I miss a part or not push it back all the way? Please help
@tetmax
@tetmax 3 года назад
Sorry to hear about your issue, Mary! I am not a professional to advise you. Mine was making that 'grinding/dragging noise' you describe right prior my fix and it was obviously not a missed part because the washer was never opened before. So, as I understand my washer noise came from the bad sensor itself. If it was me, I would definitely checked on the missed part and also made sure the replaced sensor was the proper type and installed properly. It may be you did not install it properly or it was a wrong type of the replacement or a bad sensor (not functioning replacement). Did you get your replacement from a reputable supplier or just purchased it from someone on eBay? I would check on the installation and missed parts first, then called the supplier and made 100% sure they sent the right sensor for the model. When you deal with a proper - good supplier - they ask for your washer exact model and tell you which sensor to order. If they claimed they shipped the right part - I would ask them to send a new one as the one they sent may be a bad - not functioning one! If the problem was still there, I would finally call for a trained help or would replace the washer. Hope my line of thoughts was logical and will help you somehow to fix the problem. I wish you good luck!

Everywhere I’ve looked has said to just replace the sensor. Will this work with my model stated above? Thanks again!

Hello Gymjunki! Thank you for your question! Unfortunately, I am not a trained professional to help you with that question. When I was searching for my part I just looked it up on Internet. Also, if you cannot find it anywhere, just open up the washer and remove the broken sensor to check the numbers on it, then order similar. Just take a picture of it before you remove it or film it - so, when you set the new one - you know the exact spot and the way it should be settled in. In any case the low cost of the sensor worth giving it a shot. Hope my answer will be helpful.

Hey Bill! Sorry to hear it! I am not a trained professional but I would check on 3 things. 1. See if you inserted the sensor properly. There are 3 holes - each needs one pin in - so make sure it is sits on the exact same spot as the one that is to be replaced. 2. May be the new sensor is not good. Did you get it from a trustful seller? 3. Disconnect the power, press and hold the power button - to make sure all electric static inside is gone, then re-plug it in and re-try. That may help. Those are the common troubleshooting steps I would take before googling up for more info.
