In my Psychology class this last term I was reading about how it's much easier for us to determine someone's emotion by mirroring their expression, and I've implemented that in my drawing. So when I want to make a character express a certain emotion I try to make the face that makes me feel like that. When it comes out good, I can look at the face I drew and it makes me feel that way, especially the happy ones. Also, with poses I try to make the pose or, like you said, touch myself. This really helps with drawing a realistic pose, but I definitely need to work on making my poses more dynamic and interesting.

I do concur with both of you in some ways. My late professor of drawing taught us about something he called "reduction". He made us push ourselves to the point where our drawings or paintings were somewhat "photorealistic", exhausting ourselves to the maximum. That made us discover (each student for ourselves) new ways to get the same results faster and with less effort "reducing" the path from A to B; drawing without measuring or perspective grids; without focusing on details which in a blink of an eye a normal person wouldn't even notice . He also had his "gods of art" which he constantly made us study: for portraits Hans Holbein Jr.; for lineweight Albrecht Dürer; for figure and gestures Peter Paul Rubens; for lighting Rembrandt; and for color Manet . He taught us to focus on good shapes, but not to forget anatomy and fine art form, comparing art to math saying that with practice we'll find better and easier ways to solve a problem.. Sadly he passed away when I was 2nd year, and our new professor didn't concur with the late one's teachings, neglecting anatomy too much for the sake of expression "and good shapes" and etc. (...as all of the other professors did) despite some of us trying to push the "teachings" forward. So I guess balancing out knowledge and "reduction" is the way to go.

Another important thing is that if you do not know good anatomy forget about giving good light and shadow in complex drawings, say with a certain level of realism.

Everything you're saying is correct i think even realist artists pay too much attention to the structure and the details. Like getting a likeness for a portrait is important, but when you can't make what you're drawing or painting feel natural its going to suffer no matter how much it looks like the person. Artists run to learn anatomy because something feels off in their drawings and think the obvious answer is to study bodies to learn to draw them, but dont take the time to learn how each of the parts of the body flow in relation to each other. Doing quick life drawing poses can teach so much about gesture and the flow of the body, and in a minute you dont have the time to worry about those anatomical details. I think a lot of teachers and students over look the importance of gesture practice, even more so when the end goal is not a perfectly rendered human, and thats when the gesture and flow of poses is way more important because there is no obvious anatomy to hide the bits that are lacking in flow and shape design. PRACTICE GESTURE EVEN IF IT ISNT ACCURATE IT'LL FEEL BETTER THAN THE MUSCLES YOU THOUGHT WERE THERE

At first i saw this man nothing more than a toxic guy for criticizing one's art using the word "Trash" but thats only in the thumbnail. After actually watching the video i start to realize, its really not that bad in fact he put some pretty good points. Most artists that do tutorials on the internet makes it harder for new and aspiring beginner, artists to do and learn art because of all of this mumbo jumbo you need to learn this and learn that, is just too much for an beginner artists to take in rather than using simple words and easy method to actually learn anatomy. I also get modernjames points on learning realism but you cant expect everyone to understand realism in same way.

That's why i love studying bridgman. He has all the anatomy nailed down, but his focus was on interesting shapes and dynamism

First of all I need to see this video, It says so much. When is started studying the boring anatomy books my art start to get stiff less appealing. I grow to admire artists that simplifies the shape too look interesting, that's what I want to learn.

I have different books and some talk bout shape some about anatomy being important. Depends your art style. I think shapes get you there faster but the anatomy courses do help identifying important landmarks in my opinion. That's the conclusion I've gotten to. One can be stuck a year practicing anatomy and still not draw something showing progress. Animation books focus on shape a lot and some pin up books recommend learning animation and some type of anatomy to show action in your drawings. But shapes learning shapes and perspective to me is more important satisfying and fun. I am subbed to James.

He already said the point several times in the video, dynamic poses are far more important than knowing the exact names of every tendon and muscle in the body, we are artists not doctors.

bruh knowing anatomy is still essential, even more if you are designing a whole new creature. for instance knowing function allows you to know which shapes you can safely exaggerate,or how something should behave or move,it's not about being able to accurately apply anatomy into every single figure but it's about being able to synthesize them into your drawings, and makes the construction way firmer and reduces the guess work. and i sincerely don't know how you can think about shading without thinking about tri-dimensional shapes, and i don't know how you can properly shade them if you don't even know them. the whole deal about knowing the names is so it becomes easier to recognize and learn, thus making anatomy less of just the abstraction you have from it which is an spaghetti of striated lines on a frame, there is no reason why a dynamic drawing should be anatomically precise, but there is no reason not to have a good grasp on it. ironically you need to have a massive understanding of anatomy to be able to simplify it,like some artists and masters are able to do,like: bridgeman, michael hampton, valerie winslow, frank frazetta(his drawings illustrate my point pretty well),michael mantler, alphoso mucha, and the list goes, not knowing anatomy, slows your construction down and makes you over reliant on reference, the next level is to be able to have a reasonably accurate figure moving in space fabricated from your imagination. using today's outcome-based art industry as a justification is fair from a productive standpoint, where you are looking at how you spend your time learning skills that can bring you new opportunities in the future, but looking at art as a whole this video is almost pointless.and there is no way in hell that this video could be more disorganized, dear god.

Omg this video is amazing! I was really stressed about learning anatomy and a professional saying I don’t need to study all those muscles really took a lot of weight off my shoulders. But could you give an in-depth tutorial on breaking down the torso and hips and stuff? I’m still a little lost🙂

That's good tho because then you keep their function in mind which is what really matters. But if you like, you can always go back to learning anatomy in more detail.

I don't think anyone will read or respond to this, since the video is old and I'm just an ordinary man, but anyway... I think the main take from this video is that you should study more how to make the shapes fit together than knowing all the anatomy when drawing poses. However, sorry Ethan, I do think that knowing anatomy is mandatory if you do want to create poses from both reference and from imagination, specially for animators and comic book artists. And it's strange to talk about that because you even studied under Kevin Chen, which is, from his Demos (way back in ConceptArt forums), is one of the best figure drawing and anatomy teachers I've seen. Steve Ahn also studied anatomy a lot before learning how to simplify those shapes. Yes, these kind of shapes at 7:22 do matter man. If you know anatomy, you'll know that when a leg have balance and force applied to it, the shapes at the hip area will change and make it look more wide, the glutes contract and the hip extends outward. Knowing how these joints and muscles work will make you know if a pose is wrong or not, how to bend to character to make him look like a person, and not just a bunch of triangles or something like that. But, instead of drawing of drawing anatomy with all their intricate details, you can simplify those into simple shapes and build structure on top of that. See a deltoid ? Simplify it like a delta, and draw it in perspective. See the skull? Simplify it with a box. See a triceps? Draw a triangle, and then add some minor details later. That's the way you understand how the body works while also keeping it simple to memorize this information latter on. Don't take my wrong though, I do think the content of this video is very valuable and I know where are you coming from. There's too much anatomy videos here in RU-vid and not enough videos talking about shapes, which is unironically one of the most important fundamentals for any artist.
