Fixing My Umbrella With A Makeshift Release Mechanism

This is what I did today in my garage on February 1st 2018. Fix my umbrella. I thought I'd share this mundane task since I enjoy fixing things. Most people would probably just throw it away and buy a new one but hey I have a lab, I'll use some of my junk in the garage and save ten bucks... It's raining like crazy and I need my umbrella!!!
I used a fiberglass marker rod to serve as a new handle shaft, this happens to fit perfectly into the old hollow umbrella shaft.
I crafted my own release mechanism out of metal electrical conduit strap and some screws that allows the handle to hook onto the existing umbrella slot.

I broke my umbrella today, ordinarily I'd throw it away but this one has a question mark handle from Doctor Who, so this is a great help. I shall be fixing mine like this

Also can you deminstrate how you flatten the conduit strap just to give us a idea how to do it properly thanks

T. Kearse sure I can explain what i did to flatten the conduit strip. i had a metal vice with a small anvil portion. i grabbed a pair of pliers to hold the conduit and struck the conduit against the anvil till it was flat. wear safety glasses in case the thing flies out of the pliers. with a vice clamp you can also squish it between the jaws to flatten

What size rod did you buy for this project ?

T. Kearse hello, i bought a 48" fiberglass marker rod. you can find these at the hardware store. they are bright orange with a reflective section on them. i think diameter is 5/16"
