Just want to say a big thank you for all your videos. For a DIY enthusiast like me, plastering is the dark art that have eluded me. With your help, I have recently done skimming of old walls and replastered a section of an interior wall where I have to take it right back to bare bricks. I believe large areas are still domains for the Pros and experts, but being able to do patch up here and there is really great ! The best is not fearful of knocking a big hole or section of the paster off and have to just rely on the good old pollyfiller ! Great work !

For your big areas use a big speed skim. Can't go wrong buddy. I'd go bigger areas all the time. It's just a game of timing.

I feel I have to defend you here Blaine. Some people are commenting on normal plastering practices under normal circumstances. Cement should not be used with plaster, it creates a chemical reaction that effects the bond of the plaster. There are lots of products for chases, bonding 60 or acceleraters to add to the plaster. Thistle Dri coat is meant for damp areas. Yes, it might not meet the requirements of damp specialists, but this channel is all about general plastering isn’t it. Keep up the good work mate! 👍

Hello, I enjoy your vids and find them very informative... I am currently renovating a room in my 180 year old house which is built of stone and soft black mortar . (Horrible stuff)... I've hacked off the old plaster and some of the black mortar has come away from the stone work. What I was going to do was brush out the loose mortar , pva the wall then apply a coat of sand and cement render to fill in the cavities in the stone work and also to level out the wall before i apply plaster.I The problem I have is that there is a large wooden lintel above the window so how do I get my render coat to stick to the lintel? Is there some sort of scrim or mesh that I can attachd to the lintel to allow me to render over it ? Thanks for your advice.

For deep chases have you tried adding cement to the bonding , there's no cracking or or shrinkage on goes off quickly the more cement you add , great if you need to skim when time is against you😉

Great video. Please advise, should the bare cables be enclosed in a conduit? Does the covering of the bare wires with bonding cause a problem, with heat retention by the wires and cooling, for maybe cracking, later in time? I myself have a couple for wires, I would like to bond in, without using conduit. Kind regards...

@PlasteringForBeginners
@PlasteringForBeginners 2 года назад
Hi pal! I'd fill the chase with Bonding but leave about 2mm so it's not completely flush to the wall. I would then use Easyfill as the finish because it's sandable and it's a lot more flexible than plaster. That's what I'd do matey 👍

As blain said Easifil is the governor here it’s Easy to use (still two coat ) and u can flatten in on the second coat when it’s dried sand it up with a sanding pad Ull get a perfect finish it’s great for patching in with much more user friendly than multi finish

Why can’t you use the bonding on areas that go back to brick? I have an area around a bath that I need to tie in with old plaster. Can’t use dot and dab green board as it’d sit taller than the old plaster I need to join to. I bough this exact thistle bonding mix, to level to existing plaster, and was then going to tile over but maybe I’m back to the drawing board? I’ve SBR’d the bricks and will do another coat just before plastering.

In a bathroom use hard wall or sand and cement render instead of bonding. Bonding can draw the moisture in and should be skimmed before tiling over too. Other views may vary. :-)

I'm Canadian, so I'm confused; How does the Electrical Inspector allow you to bury cabling in the plaster?
@rebeccawoods2481
@rebeccawoods2481 2 года назад
The work has been signed off prior to the burying. We have an accredited scheme that only licensed electricians or Part P (domestic installations) qualified can do home installs. The installer issues the Electrical Installation Certificate. You can do a self install I believe and get Buildings Control to check throughout that you have complied with Regulations, but I'll leave that to the more knowledgeable. We're currently on what is known as 18th Edition Regs. No Electrical Inspector required. :-)
