We've got an older house with floors that dance a little too much for my comfort. Today, we're showing you the Ellis Manufacturing Light Duty Lifting Shores, showing you how we installed them, and hoping that if we made ANY mistakes, that someone will comment! These joist jacks are made for permanent installation, so hopefully we made the right call for our floor joist support system
Joist jacks and screw jacks come in a lot of configurations, but I felt that these were the best choice because they are steel and we have somewhat damp conditions in the cellar. they are also rated for permanent installation. Have you used these before? Let me know what your experience was!
Here's the info from Elllis Manufacturing:
ellismanufacturing.com/
The Ellis Light Duty Steel Lifting Shore is a patented adjustable structural support system incorporating a thrust bearing to reduce turning effort under load by 90%. These lifting shores can be used in temporary or permanent installations and offer safe load ratings up to 20,000 lbs. They are frequently used for additional support in crawl spaces and attics, and are also excellent for support under floors, ceilings, decks or staircases, as well as beams and slabs of wood, metal or concrete. Support under: floors, ceilings, decks, staircases, wood, steel, concrete beams and slabs.
All Ellis Light Duty Steel Lifting Shores now come with the 4 lug lifting nut. Used the 3/4" Diameter Steel Adjustment Rod to lift loads up to 20,000 lbs.
The patented Ellis Thrust Bearings on the Light Duty Lifting Shores enable these shores to lift up to 10x the amount of load compared to the Light Duty Steel Shores (w/o bearings). Adjustable structural support column for temporary or permanent support with a patented nut housing tiny thrust bearings to allow for easier adjustment under load and jacking weight with significantly less force. Add any length 3/4" Diameter Steel Adjustment Rod for extra leverage and lift up to 20,000 lbs.
In the product animation below you will notice the thrust bearings inside the nut. The bearings greatly reduce the amount of friction when the Steel Shore with Roller Bearings - house jack handle is turned to adjust the height under load.
Unlike the Standard Steel Shore, these with Roller Bearings are built as one complete unit to aid in uplift resistance and do not come apart. Furthermore, we've added a "set screw" in the side of the nut, and when tightened down locks the adjustment handle in place for permanent or long term shoring applications.
The 6" x 6" top plate is attached with a clevis pin and interchangeable with different shapes and sizes. Click here to see a few of the different tops to choose from: STEEL SHORE TOPS.
*All Load Capacities include a 2.5 to 1 Factor of Safety.

I'm glad I found this video. Thanks for sharing. The Ellis product looks to be the best I have seen for supporting.

I'll tell you what- their products are not cheap, but I haven't found a better manufacturer of shoring products

I worked as an engineer for 8yrs...the way it was, was likely safe as that is how things are normally done and how things like basement stairs are often. The "free floating" joists are transfering their load to the double joist which then transfer back to the full length joists and the ledger. Normally this is a great set up however adding the massive masonary fireplace and a heavy fire insert this is not good. The chimeny block should be carrying the load of a stone facing on the chimney itself but if it is massive as you say and has a heavy stove as well the 2x6s are not enough support for the front half(things sitting on the floor) strong ties would be a good idea with structural screws or nails. You said the ends have a board on the back side so you can't use joist hangers but they do make all kinds of strong ties other then joist hangers. Also yes add blocking as others have mentioned and i would leave the posts depending how much weight is up top. I've never seen your channel before so no idea what is above and this is only advice based on your desription and what was shown in the video

Just a couple nails was all that was keeping us from falling through to the basement. Looks good!

I mean, it lasted over 50 years, so it's probably ok. But, better safe than sorry

I was surprised not to see any "X" bracing between your joists. These take the bounce out of a floor by transferring loads from one joist onto the ones on either side of it.

There's a bunch of cross bracing, but that floor still danced more than Fred Astaire!

Those joists weren't "free floating." The way it was before was fine, and most likely code, except you should probably use joist hangers. Using a double block to attach the cut off joists to adjacent double joists is standard practice. This is how they get around things like chimneys.

I bet it was up to code 60 years ago, but boy do those floors dance! Until we can get things updated, the jacks are working like a charm!

Hello, I presently live in a home that have sagging floors. I have decided to purchase jacks and lift the floors from the basement. My question is are there any prep work required on the 1st and 2nd floor prior to installing the kicks and lifting? Do I need to be concerned with baseboard trim, door trim, or anything. I have received my drawings on where to place the jacks. I understand that my plaster and drywall will also begin to crack in some areas. I just want to get level floors before I purchase my new doors and install new trim.

all you needed there would have been joist hangers. the jacks would not be necessary.

also by looking at the video those floor joists look to be 2x8's.

You could have put a 4x4 across to support all of them instead of a jack for each one.
@HomesteadBandwagon
@HomesteadBandwagon Год назад
Would have been nice, but the span was large enough that a 4x4 would not provide adequate support. We also may be doing some changes down there, so the Jacks allow me to remove them when needed.

4x4s are not ment to be used laterally in most cases. 4x4s are prone to twisting, warping and cracking which is why glulam style beams are normally used.

My floor is bouncy from the guys using nails on the subfloor and it’s a older house. My floor is bowed upward from where we used these. I can still make things shake in my house. I just assume it’s from the way the subfloor is

Putting in bracing between the joists can really help too. I'll be adding more once we get done with some other projects
