Excellent video! We were out this weekend behind Leadville, CO and my 4wd didn't kick in when i needed it the most. Came back home, found your video and fixed it with your help! I can't thank you enough.
Excellent video, good camerawork, narration listing parts and tools needed as well as showing the procedure was top notch. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Subscribed. Yesterday my 2021 Taco made a huge bang noise when switching from 2WD to 4WD. It frightening loud. Recently changed to front and rear diff oil to Mobil gear oil and really hope the fluid is not the problem. Will be inspecting it today. Only 90 000 km on the truck, Canada 🇨🇦 here.
Hi mine made a loud noise too, didn't engage, and dash light has been flashing. Drives fine other than won't go into 4x4. What ended up being your problem?
@@knomatik The front actuator was replaced along with the diff fluid, working fine now. Without selecting 4X4 the whole offroad function of the Tacoma is useless 😑.
Great video, just an FYI that you can also use Right Stuff gasket maker and not have to wait 1 hour before torqueing down the bolts. Also don't have to wait 24 hrs before driving the truck. I've done it and have had no leaks even after years of abuse.
Great video! I’m in the dealership right now with a failed differential case actuator at only 16,000 miles. Fortunately it’s covered under warranty. I’m definitely going to install hose clamps and raise the height of the vents when I get back to my shop.
This is one of the things I don't like about the 3rd gens. Why couldn't they just use a super reliable lever instead of this weak link system. It's hard to trust a dial system that's so finicky.
This 4WD system is ridiculous. The lever was better and superior in every way. I kind of miss my Jeep Wrangler already. Thanks for the video! Very helpful and informative.
You’re welcome. A lot of people are swapping to the FJ transfer case. Apparently it’s not too bad of a swap. As soon as my truck is out of warranty i am thinking about it also.
@azbackroadadventures seriously man. I have like 300 miles on my brand new 2023 TRD OR and I already want to rip this T case off this truck and put a manual in. This is ludicrous. That aside, is the Tcase off the FJ cruiser the exact same/same range as the Tacoma? Do you have a good video of the install? What about the front diff electronics? Also I guess we would just have to drill a cut out in our floorboard for the lever?
@makofive.5660 i have not done it myself (yet) but yes, it is a direct swap with the exception of having to grind one spot on the housing. The shift lever ends up coming up in the passenger side front cupholder. So not terrible.
I just bought a 2021 Tacoma trd off-road 2 days ago with 37k miles and took it out for the first time and had this problem im a broke 17year old and I’m freaking out please help me I don’t know what to do I’m not sure if it’s covered either.
With 37,000 miles on it warranty should cover it. I am assuming you purchased it private party. If you bought from a dealer take it back to them. But if not call your local Toyota dealer.
I wonder what is up with that Asin site where I just found You an hour or so ago. I had to go pick up my 2019 taco with only 11G miles for the same problem, and returned home and tried to get back to your posts on that site, and one that I actually added , and they mysteriously disappeared. Are they censoring repair info?? WYF.
I am not sure what you were trying to say in your comment. I think you are saying you had the same issue on your Tacoma with 11,000 miles on it? I don’t post on any other sites besides RU-vid, Instagram and Facebook.
So the vent tube has to be able to let air in as well as let pressure out I don't know I'm asking because I was thinking check valve let pressure out but nothing into it I guess it has to breath
@AZ Backroad Adventures unbelievable. It's a good thing they made it some cheap plastic button and added a cheaply made and complicated electronic engagement system that is guaranteed to break and cost a thousand dollars to fix....
Thank you for watching! I am unsure of what you mean? Do you mean like physically tapping on the housing to reestablish a connection? Or tapping as in electrical connection?
@carolbrown1100 i see what you’re saying now. I have tried this before, and it didn’t work for me, however it could possibly work. My concern would be cracking the plastic on the housing.
@@carolbrown1100 i wouldnt tap the plastic. you can try tapping lightly on the metal with a wrench but fwi can tell if tapping fixes it you probably should either replace or rebuild it at some point. It's pretty straight forward. If you can do a tune-up then you should have no problem changing them out.
My 4x4 light in my tacoma will blink for days while I'm driving but if I get the traction control to activate on say loose gravel where the rear tires skip a lil it goes away. It won't go into 4 hi most of the time but once I get the light to turn off via my previous method it'll work just fine 4hi and 4 lo but ince I go back to 2wd it just stays blinking could this be the fix I need
I have since noticed that i have to be in “D” and cannot be in the manual mode. Then accelerate to about 20-25mph, let off the throttle, and flip to 4hi. Then when going back to 2wd do the same 20-25 mph, let off and flip to 2hi. This has worked well the last few times as well. But its stupid that we ALL are having this issue and Toyota isn’t fixing it.
@AZ Backroad Adventures I plan on doing this this weekend. Sometimes it'll flash for.days on the road.and stop out of nowhere. If I feather the clutch just right it'll go away also. Super weird but definitely gonna clean it out and sober those contacts and see what happens
It did for me. There are 2 actuators though. 1 on the front differential and one on the transfer case. Depending on which one is having issues, it may or may not fix it. I only did the front differential actuator and it fixed mine. You may have different results.
Never had this problem. Probably never will. Why? Because I use my 4wd and I use it often (at least once a week rain, snow or shine). These systems were not meant to be disengaged for more than 3-4 weeks at a time. Use the truck for what it was built for, offroading. Or just leave it in 2wd and take it to Toyota when you want to go offroading so that they can get it unstuck for you.
That’s awesome that you use your truck all the time, as do I (maybe check out some other videos or watch this one all the way through) but under-use of the 4wd system is not what this fix is referring to.
@@gabrielreyes8476 I used the 4wd in my 3rd gen several times a month as I live on a sandy dirt road and actually use my truck off-road and I had to replace the transfer case actuator after doing what he showed n this video. I agree 100% with what your saying but that’s not always the case
?? that's not going to stop dirt and mud from getting in that breather hole, wtf are you talking about? It's a design flaw. And actually going 4x4 in mud and dirt will make it fail quicker.
