Fixing the 'Hum when Nothing is plugged in' fault on a Fender Frontman 212r Guitar Combo
This great 2005 amplifier has a well known fault that it Hums when nothing is plugged in, when you plug something in then it works all as it should be.
After some digging about on the internet I found how to repair this fault so I thought I would share the knowledge with you. I also made a couple other small repairs, and the end the is a demo of the sound.

This worked brilliantly..i j hooked mine on top really neatly and out of the way. .i used the wire insulation trick for a little insurance but there's nothing for the resistor to come in contact with. Thank you.. great video.

very helpful. I have a Princeton 65 (PR 403) with this problem and always thought it had some bad caps...this should help me track down and fix the issue; Thanks! I have seen some leaky caps on mine (opened it up yesterday) so those will need replacement too

I found on mine that the mute switching contact that forms part of the Input Jack 1 was dirty and tarnised and not making a good contact, therefore the mute didn't operate correctly. After cleaning the jack plug contacts it was ok. I used Kontack cleaner and a glass fibre brush. The circuit schematic is easy to find and download from the internet.

I just happen to be working on the same amp. Youve been very helpful. The shafts for two of the pots were broken off and also hearing the amp gave me some insight. Thanks

Hi~ Friend. Thanks for great video fixing of potentiometers. I just ask that where buy for all potentiometers for fender FM212r?

Hello! Thank you for quick fix! I have the same problem with Frontman 25r which uses LM3876 as power amplifier. There is similar transistor-zener configuration at LM3876 pin 8 which has mute function. Could it be the same fault?

Possibly I don't have this amp anymore so didn't do any more fiddling.

Excellent. I just got one for £40 and it's doing this very thing) also,the volume doesn't get any louder from about 4 upwards for some reason. A mate of mine will hopefully get it sorted for me soon.cheers

That may be a bad solder joint on the volume pot

That being said they are very loud low down I wonder if they fitted by mistake a log rather than a Lin or vice versa

Please, what is the resistor number that you used? Thank you!

Hi Matthew, great vid, thanks. I had exactly the same problem and my local amp tech fixed it (he said by eliminating the muting circuit) and the hum is gone - however, there's a "squeak" from the amp shortly after I turn it off. No mice in there, so... any ideas please? Thanks. Andy
@MatthewNorthMusic
@MatthewNorthMusic Год назад
That's just the power supply caps discharging it's a trade off for not having the muting circuit though lord of amps do it you can just turn down the volume before you turn off that should clear it

@@MatthewNorthMusic Cheers for the prompt reply. Reassuring to know, thanks, but even with all control knobs on zero there's still a slight squeak - but I can live with it. In other news, another popular issue with this amp seems to be overheating (somewhere) - mine seems ok but does this have anything to do with anything other than amount of time spent turned on (i.e. volume or tone settings) do you know please? Thanks again, Andy

The reason for the hum might not be the muting circuit but as the mute is switching Q9 and Q10 too, there might be a misbalance in the further stages of the power amp. I have noticed that the voltage drop on R109 and R112 is misbalanced with the mute, but gets in balance with a jack inserted. I have 3 amps in right now with almost the same problem, one of them is distorting just sometimes. As soon as I touch some points in the power amp with the oszilloscope probe, it works for some time again with full power and goes down after a while. -_- There must be a reason for the hum though. Already changed some burnt resistors and alomost all transistors. Got stuck.

Please. Is there a way to make an aux entry in the frontman 212r fender?
@MatthewNorthMusic
@MatthewNorthMusic Год назад
If you jist want to use it as a power amp then plug into the FX return that basically by passes the pre amp

I've got one of these, and as we all know, the crunch channel is horrible, I was contemplating switching the OD circuit with the innards of a decent but cheap pedal like a blue sky or tubescreamer clone, what are your thoughts? I haven't had a look at the PCB yet but if anyone has an insight on voltages of the inbuilt drive circuit, if I could remove or bypass, and if I could fit a 9v transformer from the power supply to the new distortion circuit, and also still have full useability of the amp controls and footswitch, that works be amazing!
@MatthewNorthMusic

Just use the clean channel and pedals.

i have had 3 of those amps... another fault that is very common is the pop and crackle noise randomly that is sperate from the pots etc... sounds like a mobile phone is right on them receiving signal... great look vintage style... a nice sound ..well decent lets say.... but surly has to be in the top 20 dreadful amps ever created !

Can't you just use a pedal for the hum?
