shortest video ever! replacing the m.2 wifi is no big deal on the Lenovo yoga with 8th gen i7 CPU. even a novice can do this pretty easily.
note also a 2x2 connection could theoretically support 867mbps max but real world 20mhz channels etc etc is 433mbit...

I know this is an old video but thank you so much, I just replaced my WIFI card and it solved all the WIFI issues I was having with my Lenovo Y530. I was connected via ethernet most of the time so I never realized it was a problem until recently, after warranty was up. (Warranties are kind of pain in Canada anyway, high shipping costs coupled with long turn around times).

Does card whitlisting still a thing? At first I discovered that my new wifi module is blocked by BIOS, for a second I wished a meteor would struck Lenovo's MOBO devel floor. Like they protect me by allowing only few modules out of stock everywhere but them. Sad I like the lenovo chicklet keyboards and don't want to migrate.

Wendell, Toby Harper posted below that he received his 920 with the Intel card installed. Can you confirm if Lenovo has fixed this issue (with your solution) on newer builds? Any idea on how/where one can order the 920 with the guarantee this card will be installed?

Thanks so much for this video!! I'm thinking of trying this on my Yoga 720, but I'm not sure if there's a blacklist/anti-right-to-repair software in the BIOS. Although I don't think Lenovo's known for that.

Thank you for the helpful video, I replaced mine with the Intel 9260 9260NGW and speed test hit ~430 Mbps which was nearly 200 Mbps more than what I was getting. Pro tip: use a piece of masking tape to prevent screws from bouncing around.

I think I might have to do this to my Ideapad-330s because the Qualcomm Atheros card that comes with it has some power issues. The package won't enter C-states deeper than C3 with it enabled. The package goes down to C8 once I disable the wifi card in windows and my power consumption drops by roughly 0.6 Watts.

Hi guys - I have the Intel 7265AC wireless module in my 3rd Gen Lenovo X1 Carbon. It just died. Does anyone know if the 9560AC module will work as an upgrade (I notice that it seems to use extra pins on the card) or maybe the 9260AC would be the one to go for? Second question is whether that Lenovo model would in any way restrict upgraded modules inside its BIOS (whitelisting)? Thanks for your help!

Hey there! I absolutely love this idea to replace my wifi card in my Lenovo 1370 Pro 3. Is the Intel 8265 the best wifi card to install still, in 2020? Or do you suggest a newer better one now? I see this video was made in 2018. I've been having issues with my Zoom video calls buffering the video/sound. No one else has the issue but me. I'm hoping a new wifi card upgrade like you suggested here will solve the problem, unless you have other ideas to try? Netflex, RU-vid streams fine otherwise. Thanks so much for the answer!

The 2x2 8265NGW will technically do 866Mbps link speed (as opposed to the 433Mbps you said) but only with 80Mhz channel width. 40Mhz and you'll get 400Mbps link speed. Also to the people looking to buy an m.2 WiFi card, if you want Bluetooth 5.0 there's the 9260NGW from Intel which isn't that much more expensive than the 8265NGW.

Well, it's been in my 920 for a half hour and seems alright. The unit looked a little different on the contact strip with less connective stripes but it cranked right up. One thing to note on the installation is that is is significantly easier to re-connect the wi-fi leads PRIOR to plugging it into the mother board and locking down with the screw! I need to see if I need to update the drivers now, wifi speeds look REALLY strong! Thank you again!

Disable 'allow my computer to turn this device off to save power' also make sure it's set to 'maximum performance' and 'no power savings' in Windows Power Plan. (Also you said you updated the drivers... the old drivers can interfere, make sure you fully uninstall the entire network card in device manager, including software, and reinstall. That should clear out the old drivers from your garbage NIC.)

@Aint1S

I find laptops that accept the driver packages from the manufacturers of the hardware are far and away better products all around. HP laptops are just trash and their motherboards are made by the same company that produces the motherboards for those crappy tablets you'll find in Wal-Mart... I wish I was joking, but it's true. Not to mention that they withhold features that would otherwise work with the OEM's driver, but they prefer to disable the features to one up you into a bigger pile.

This is exactly why there is marketspace for other companies like System76 or purism. Sadly the problem is that they lack the finance to create these kind of laptops, thin, 2in1, powerfull, with loads of battery. We are close to this, but not yet there. I would blindly purchase a laptop that would allow me to do the following : - 2in1 (I draw, I take notes) - Runs Linux & Kvm w. gpu passthrough (proper IOMMU + proper - Has a great cooling on all components (thunderbolt is absolutely awful and prone to fire, for real !) If you manufacture laptops, please add an heatsink to that chip ! - Power can be from usb-c or another input (usb-c is limited and depending on your GPU/CPU that will not be enough) - Maybe a module to get the power brick slim attached to the laptop itself, those ext. bricks are such a pain - Great wifi, a foldable rj45 port (YES you can put a rj45 in a slim laptop, nobody needs a paper thin laptop and all the cons that go with it) - Great keyboard (no flex!), cleanable, no weird font, standard layout, maybe even changeable, please put holes to redirect liquid to other holes on the side or bellow the laptop - Use the screen back to provide extra battery. (See Surface book), use that legal 100W/h - FN keys by default. No sounds and other useless shortcuts by default at each boot... - LARGE trackpad, no proprietary mess driver - Great audio with electrical noise isolation and low latency chip. (Lots of great chips available with open drivers) - Wifi antenas that don't use the chassis as extenders ! - Electric noise check (It's so awful to be able to tell when the mouse moves on your screen without looking because the computer emits electrical noises that are audible...) - No freaking HDMI, choose DISPLAY PORT, you can get hdmi from DP! - A screen that is Adobe RGB 100% or any other spectrum that covers most of the needs PS: I ask for a lot but, I'm an owner of a Surface Book Performance, , and sadly the Linux situation on it sucks. I purchased this laptop at the time because it was the only one of its kind. Now there is other alternatives of course. So Yes, I'm willing to cash-in! Manufacturers are just not willing to make that kind of device... If you too, please let the manufacturers know, specially the open ones. They need guidance, otherwise they will have to follow any trend from any big brand in order to sell some devices. I'll take a thicker laptop any day if it provides more features including battery (screen on time)

At 1:02: white wire at black triangle, black wire at white triangle. Does it matter?
@wargamingrefugee9065
@wargamingrefugee9065 6 лет назад
I noticed that too. The wires are antennas, so likely not. However, the length of an antenna can effect its reception of certain frequencies of radio waves, so it's a possibility. By way of a related, visible example, look through the window in the door of a microwave oven, you will see a mesh with a lot of small holes in it. The holes in the mesh are sized in relation to the frequency of the oven's microwaves (microwaves are radio waves). In essence, the wavelength of the microwaves is too long to fit through the holes; that's why, if you put your hand on the window of a microwave oven, it won't start to heat up like the food inside the oven. Conversely, when it comes to receiving radio waves, if the length of an antenna is the length of the radio wave, the antenna will to tuned to the wave length and have better reception. You can see examples of tuned length antennas by looking up images of Bluetooth modules. You will see a line on the module with a series of 90 degree corners, that's the module's antenna tuned to the length of the Bluetooth radio waves.

Any recommendation for an Intel card now? My Yoga 6 drops frequently. Actually, the biggest issue seems to be that the card is very slow to (re-)establish a connection. When I wake any of my other laptops on from sleeping, they are immediately connected. Conversely, I have to sit and wait for the Yoga to connect. It's very obvious when GMail is telling you that it cannot connect, so you look down and see the globe icon instead of the wifi connected one. Almost makes me wonder if breaks in connection are common with any card, but that Intel cards re-establish so quickly that it isn't noticeable. Certainly, being slow makes the issue worse. Also, interestingly, no matter what ethernet-to-USB-C adapter I use, it will drop connection on that, too. Right in the middle of Zoom calls, drop. I have to use my old HP Revolve 810 G3 for Zoom. Annoying. I like the design of the Yogas, but they are built lightly (heavy keyboard flex) and have issues like this. Wish I'd gone another way.

Peter Tuin I didn't do anything else other than install it and install the driver :-/ possibly a Bios update? I know I did one before I put the 7260 in, to correct for yellow hue in the screen (3200x1800 model).

Short and sweet, just like that smooth jazz. It feels me with deep satisfaction to see someone fixing the junk laptop vendors put out.

Isn't the bottleneck in today's WiFi the internet connection rather than WiFi connections? 400Mbs Wifi seems plenty fast to me for a 70Mbs fibre connection or am I missing something?

Had the first gen Yoga and paid over $1k to only have it running slow. Returned and got a Macbook Air with less storage and memory, but it was on sale.

Hi, can I use a Intel 9560 for the Lenovo Yoga 730 15IKB. Would there be any issues.

Some Lenovo and hp models need a bios mod to avoid the wifi card whitelist "feature" they put in to assure compliance with fcc nonsense. Side note, swapped the intel 3168 wifi to 9560 onmy laptop, and yeah, works great.

So wait, is this what's going to fix my issue with my Lenovo laptop where it keeps disconnecting from my wifi for NO reason? I love the laptop but I can't stand that it keeps dropping

Yep. The issue is that the Realtek card it comes with stock is absolute trash and Lenovo shouldn't have used it in the first place.

@@benjamincarron9732 it shouldn't be legal for them to sell a defective product. It seems the majority of the laptops with the card have this issue and they know damn well its an issue they just deny it and claim ignorance.

I had to replace the wireless card in my Dell XPS 13 for the same reasons. It was complete garbage, especially when on campus. Upgraded it with an Intel 8260 and it's good as gold now.
