Time to get the Mini Project running. The issues really got me down at the end of last year, so it seems like a good idea to start 2017 fixing them.
With the wheel chatter being the most major issue, I decided to tackle that first. Implementing a few suggestions posted on the M05 Issues video a few months ago, it was fixed by replacing the standard drivecup/dogbone setup by universal driveshafts from 3Racing. The driveline is running smoothly now and it was only a £13 expense.
I was planning on upgrading the diff in the future anyway so it wont go to waste. I'll run it with the standard diff for now, and look to upgrade later down the line.
Really looking forward to the first proper run. My first FWD chassis and it being such a short wheelbase, it's going to be a completely new driving experience.

I know this is four years old but I got an NSU TT on the m-05 chassis and had a bad problem with my front axles slipping out, I only built it today and tried to find anyone who had similar with the same chassis, in the instructions it didn’t say to put o rings in the cups of the axle but you said you did, I tried it out and it completely fixed the issues I was having, I ordered new axles also just to be sure but since I done it I’ve not had a problem, thanks for the video

Glad to see the universals fixed the chatter, on to the next problem.

It was the most common suggestion I received in the M05 Problems video. So happy it worked. An update on the wheel rub is coming soon.

Me too. Really happy the issue is resolved. I'm looking forward to driving it. My first FWD RC. Thanks for the feedback on the new setup. I love the new look, glad you like it to.

This is really helpful. I'm just finishing an M-05 and initial bench testing has shown the same wheel rattle on full lock. It surprises me really as I've got other cheapish Tamiya 4WD's and haven't had a problem with the front wheels when steering. Anyway you have found a solution so I've ordered the same drive shafts. Many thanks for posting this :-)
@RCProjects
@RCProjects 7 лет назад
No problem. I just wanted to let people know an easy solution to fixing the wheel shake. New driveshafts was the most popular suggestion from the last video. I also had no issues with my TL01 using the same dogbone/drive cup setup. I did have this issue with my TT01 though. Thanks for watching and for the feedback. Really appreciate it.

I had the same problem with my cooper and the universals did the job. I recently purchased tbe sanw shocks you have on your cooper. DEFINITELY helps with how it handles the road
@RCProjects
@RCProjects 7 лет назад
Yeah racing shocks have never let me down, I just hope the universals do the same. It seems such a common problem, I'm surprised Tamiya haven't fixed it yet. I've got all the scale items I need for the roof rack so I'll hopefully be filming a running video soon.

Those CVD driveshafts sorted my M03R Mini as well. It works even smoother and quieter if you push a little Marine Grease in the outer joint, whilst you have it apart to Locktite the pins. I didn't have to trim mine... I guess the M03R has a slightly narrower suspension. You've got yours running very smooth indeed.
@RCProjects
@RCProjects 7 лет назад
I may try greasing the outer joint. I want these driveshafts to last. Thanks for the tip.

Try spring washer to stop the play. Just snip one you have and bend its points say 5mm apart we know 6mm fit but not great. It was stabilize it but forgive the harder knocks hopefully.

Thanks for the tip. To be honest, I've not driven the M05 since I finished building it. After all the problems I had with the kit, I just have no desire to drive it. This advice may be useful for someone else however, so thanks for posting it.

Same ones I have. Glad that solved the worst issue you where having. Tamiya really should take note here to start using CV joints, at least in this application. Actually, I think Tamiya should do this to all their dog bone setups (but that's just my opinion) Did yours not come with blades (or cushions) to put on the end that goes to the diff cups? Just didn't look like there was any on the ends when you installed them.
@RCProjects
@RCProjects 7 лет назад
It would be nice if Tamiya listened to the feedback but I doubt they would implement a change. It would cost them too much. I did try the universal driveshafts with cushions in the drivecups but it was very tight when putting the knuckles back on. It was still smooth when I took them out so I'll leave it as is.
@nukedathlonman
@nukedathlonman 7 лет назад
Ah...Oh wait, I'm using the 3racing geared limited slip diff - the cup's must be sized slightly different (I know the material is very different).
@RCProjects
@RCProjects 7 лет назад
That'll be the difference. I've still got the ball diff to upgrade the stock one later down the line. It will be interesting to see the difference it'll make. I need to drive it first though!

mine did the chatter when i installed the adjustable upper arms that give camber if you want. That was because that caused the the inner and outer cups to push the dogbone very much and when you turned it hadent got room to move so it chattered. So i fixed that by removing the o-ring that was inside the drive cups.
@RCProjects
@RCProjects 7 лет назад
Yeah, those dogbones are a bit of a nightmare if they don't have room to move. The universals are much smoother now. Can't wait to run it. Thanks for watching.

Nice Build! I´m up to Build a M-05 - the first Time - It would be nice if you post like a list of (after-market) parts you used (specially those driveshafts and "washers")...and where to get them/which shop provides them. (I´m, quite new to RC Models and its always a big help to get hints and helps from experienced guys!
@RCProjects
@RCProjects 6 лет назад
I got all my shims (washers) from RCMart.com. All different sizes and thicknesses in one bulk order. Just type 'Shim' in the search box and refine it to 3racing as a manufacturer and you should find some. The driveshafts were from Ebay. Here's a link: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M03M-11-V3-Tamiya-Mini-M05-M03-Steel-U-J-Driveshafts-3-racing-/352183544147?hash=item51ffc66953 If you need any more help, just let me know. Thanks for watching.

No problem, glad I could help. Cutting and painting a bodyshell is the most difficult and time consuming part of building an RC. It just takes time and patience. The only way to learn is to practice.

Good vid. Good solution. I have a lot of the reverse problems. Universal axles causing problems :-)
@RCProjects
@RCProjects 7 лет назад
Not sure what the problem is there. That might require a new diff. Ask around to see if others are having the same issue. Hope you fix it. Thanks for watching.
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 7 лет назад
Oh, no. I was just referring to the common problem with Tamiya's universal axles found in many of their off road models (Monster Beetle, DF-02, DT-02...). When the angle is too steep it causes a lot of rumble and tumble with large buggy and truck tires (when they're not supported on the ground, not running, like in this video) Nice too see it is a reverse problem with the on road models :-)
@RCProjects
@RCProjects 7 лет назад
Sorry for the misunderstanding. This issue seems to be affecting a lot of M05s. So many comments with people saying they have/had this problem. A bit ridiculous to be honest. Tamiya should have stepped up and sorted it by now. Ah well, it's all sorted now and ready for its first run. Can't wait.
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 7 лет назад
RCProjects Tamiya close their eyes on many things. It's a bit ridiculous. But when they work there's nothing like the beauty of a Tamiya. It was nice with a video where a problem was solved effectively. Good job!
@RCProjects

My TL01 is exactly that, it just works. Others like the M05 need attention. I'm just glad that it's fixed.

@davejones8956

How do you locktite the pins? Is locktite some sort of glue?
@RCProjects
@RCProjects 7 лет назад
Locktite is a liquid that you put on the thread of a screw. When it dries, it locks the two threads together, preventing screws from backing out. Blue Locktite can be undone by hand but red Locktite needs heat to allow the screw to be loosened. There's a grub screw that secures the pin for the universal joint. It can come loose with the vibration of the suspension. I found that out the hard way with my TT01 drift car. Just put some Locktite on that grub screw, tighten it down and you shouldn't have any issues.

Does anybody know why my universal shafts make a clicking noise? When I installed them I tried them out and once I turn I begin to hear the clicking noise. And I know it's not tapping on something because when I brought one universal shaft out, I manually turned one side and held the other one, and I could hear that click noise. Any help would be greatly appreciated
@RCProjects
@RCProjects 7 лет назад
Mine made the same clicking noise. I took out the rubber O-ring from the drive cup on the diff. I also put a shim behind the pin for the hex adapter. There's no clicking now and it all runs smoothly. Just experiment to see what works. That's what I did. Hope this helps. Good luck. Thanks for watching.

Can you do me a favour and explain what you mean by locktite the uni driveshaft please. I have the same chatter issue on my M-05.
@RCProjects
@RCProjects 6 лет назад
Sure, there's a grub screw that holds in a pin to keep the driveshaft together. You can see this in the joint part of the driveshaft. It's best to remove this grub screw, put some Loctite on the thread and put the grub screw back into the driveshaft and tighten it down. The Loctite will harden with no air supply and lock the threads together, prevent it from backing out while driving. It happened on my drift car. The pin came out and caught on the rear hub. It took a chunk out of the hub and bent the joint on the driveshaft. Better to be safe than sorry. Here's a link to some universal driveshafts and some Loctite: UNIVERSAL DRIVESHAFTS: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M03M-11-V3-Tamiya-Mini-M05-M03-Steel-U-J-Driveshafts-3-racing/352183544147?hash=item51ffc66953:g:gnQAAOSwMmBVt5wx LOCTITE: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Loctite-2400-OEM-Specified-Medium-Strength-Thread-Lock-Sealant-Stud-Nutlock/371405317045?epid=1454271301&hash=item56797b63b5:g:~18AAMXQrNtR3TY8 Hope this helps. Yes I did. I only found out about the Unicorn Circuit a few months ago, so I went back and watched them all. I'm also fairly new to MCM. I only started watching at the beginning of last year as well. I really liked the music they used so I've bought their entire library. Expect to hear more of Moog in videos in the future.

If you Ballance your wheels your car will run faster and accelerate quicker,.... And your wheel bearings will last longer.
@RCProjects
@RCProjects 6 лет назад
I've personally never balanced a wheel. If I was competitively racing on a flat carpet track then I would definitely look into it, but I don't see the benefits when I'm just having fun with mine. Quite a few of my RCs see a lot of abuse and I haven't actually run this one yet due to being put off by all the problems. It's just a shelf queen at the moment. Do you race RCs?
@Derryjones2
@Derryjones2 6 лет назад
I would have ballanced the wheels first,....... I think you would have a better results,..... And save a hole lot of time and money.
@RCProjects
@RCProjects 6 лет назад
A wheel being out of balance will in no way cause this amount of wheel shake. The stock dogbone and drive-cup setup was the cause of the wheel shake.
