Part one of the process on doing some rust repair on my 98 dodge ram 1500. I've never done anything like this before along with just learning how to weld and using this job as a learning tool on how to weld. I'm a beginner at all of this for the most part so I figured I record the process of fixing my truck. More videos to come.

Really appreciate those who knows how to weld, it’s one of those jobs that not everyone can do.

I appreciate this. I'm no professional by any means and don't claim to be. I just took it upon myself to do the job because every place I took my truck to made it seem like it was a piece of junk that wasn't worth working on. I was learning as I went on this.

I was surprised at how bad that inner rocker was. You’ve picked up welding fast. Your repairs are looking good.

I was surprised as well smh. Hopefully I did a good enough job to make the repair last. Thank you I just went for and started welding to do this all self taught other than watching videos. Appreciate it man.

@@nicholasbrokemond9880 I too need to fix some bad rust on my 97. What type of welder are you using, flux? How's the inner rockers holding? My are pretty bad too

@@twinnmann Hey yes I did use a flux core welder. It's a Chicago electric welder. They are holding up well. The only thing that I see is a few little spots bubbling up where I guess I didn't get the rust completely on the outer rocker.

The next step is to drill a few small holes and shoot some oily coating inside the rockers, which the factory obviously never did. Same thing goes for the lower sections of the doors and fenders. After over a century of making cars you would think they give it some protection against rust...
@nicholasbrokemond9880
@nicholasbrokemond9880 3 года назад
There are some opening at the bottom of the rockers and cabs that allow you to do that which I never noticed until doing this. I did spray some fluid film in the rockers and cab corners the best I could. You're right you would think they would figure out how to stop cars from rusting away. Smh
@nicholasbrokemond9880
@nicholasbrokemond9880 3 года назад
The fenders are shot I've done my best with them I have new ones just don't have the inner fenders and the doors I have a really good passenger side door but no driver side door and the bed I've sprayed all kinds of stuff in there to slow down the rust on the bed sides but I have patch panels for them as well.

Lmao this isn’t funny but I can relate bro. I picked up a Ford e350 off some guy that lives in NY. He did a poor bondo job to put lipstick on the rust issue. Both sides were essentially gone up to the floor pan and about 4 inches up the wheel wells. Took my months to fix it. I suck at welding but I got it as good as I possibly could. At least the problem was stopped and it looks presentable enough to work out of

Smh that's terrible he did you like that. Glad you were able to get it fixed that's all that's important. Yeah I decided to do the job myself because all the places I took my truck to they made me feel like my truck wasn't worth fixing so I said I'll do it myself. I can't make it look any worse than it does with all these rust spots and holes.

Yeah people see some rust and instantly think they’re junkers. As long as they’re running strong they’re worth fixing the cosmetic issues.I watched all the vids. You did a really good job and I bet it cost you way less to do it yourself. Keep up the good work 👍🏼

What kind of welder did you use for this ?
@nicholasbrokemond9880

I used a Chicago welder from harbor freight. I couldn't afford a $1000 dollar weld and I'm still a beginner so a cheap Flux core welder from harbor freight was the best option for me.

The crazy thing is my 3rd gen Ram has over 220k miles on the original engine and transmission, overall it's still mechanically sound. The body on the other hand is completely rusted out! The rust on my truck is far worse than yours! I'm baffled with these truck manufacturers because it seems as if they worked out the kinks in the engine and transmission that the Dodge Ram was so famous for having but while doing so they completely ignored the body rust issues.
@nicholasbrokemond9880
@nicholasbrokemond9880 2 года назад
It's amazing how they haven't done anything to combat the rust issue in these trucks. I have seen new trucks with bad rust problems and I'm so confused as to how the manufacturer did not try and solve this problem.

@nicholasbrokemond9880

With my little knowledge I'd say get some quality wire. I used the Flux wire that came with the welder and then switched to the Vulcan brand and it was so much better. Also make sure you clean the metal really really good and then when welding sheet metal spread out your welds meaning don't weld in one spot to long or the metal will warp because of the heat and you don't want that. The same goes for when you grind down the welds don't grind in one spot to long because of the heat and it will warp the metal as well.

Wrong that's a 3rd Gen not 2nd. 1st Gen is from 1974 to 1980 and 2nd Gen is from 1981 to 1993 in the USA and 1995 in Canada. You can check body lines and that makes yours and 3rd generation
@Asphaltaperider

Again 1st Gen from 1974 to 1980 and 2nd Gen was from 1981 to 1993 in the USA and to 1995 in Canada. I know because I have worked on them before you because I have worked on them since they were new .I don't understand stand how you or other people can't get it right the body line change is how you tell the difference stop listening to people that don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. And hasn't worked on them since new and for 21 years I have been a paint and body man starting with those trucks. Even LMC truck shows the Difference in the years as what I said.

@@nicholasbrokemond9880 That's awesome. More people need that "can do" attitude. I talked to a body shop and they told me the same thing. "We only do collisions. We don't do rust." SMH. My truck has a cummins diesel with 140k miles, and no DEF nonsense to deal with. I will keep this truck going until 300k at least, one way or another.

@@FarmCraft101 Yep I heard the same thing we don't deal with rust. My truck has 267 something thousand miles on it and I pray it keeps going. I do the maintenance and prevention things to it to keep it going strong. It's not a piece of junk like the body shops made it seem.
