Richard, I did this last week thanks to your tips, proven method worked, my cracks were not near as ugly as your damage but i found black rock guard spray worked great after the PL drys. Thanks!
Hey Richard, Last winter i went on the highway and forget to close the lid of my yakima skybox 21 which ripped right off and got cracked pretty bad. I was going to throw it out but when i saw your video i was so happy. Im fixing it up right now and it coming along pretty good. This box is over 1000$ up here in Canada so this is saving me money. Thank you so much again for sharing this video
A similar product to PL is called "Liquid Nails" used in wood home construction to glue subfloor down to the floor joists. I think it's made by "Lepage"
Mine didn't get rock hard either. It almost seems like yours ended up course like a flat paint. I used the same product, and it worked, not hard as a rock, but like a hard rubber.
good job, ive just attempted to do mine here in the UK, used some bits and bobs out the shed. Mine was only a small hole really (size of your thumb nail) with a couple of cracks, im not sure if we have that stuff you used here so i had a go with Evostick Hard as nails to fill the hole with some gaffer tape on the inside to support it. Just waiting for it dry to see the result!
I bought a damaged Thule box also. Was every bit as bad as yours? I did a lot of research, via RU-vid & came up with a slurry made up of Acetone & cut-up pieces of black ABS pipe. The slurry took about 24 hours to come to the consistency I wanted. Tried to hold the pieces together the best I could. Have to say myself it's probably stronger than the rest of the box. As life would go, there were 30 other people who wanted to buy it. I was the first to call on it so I got it. I have a 2016 Tacoma with a factory roof rack. Yes, the rails won't go to 43 inches, now I'm going to drill out the bottom slides & remount them to accommodate the distance I need. Word of warning don't follow too close behind me. Just kidding, if it doesn't look safe I'll redo it.
your opinion on using plastic welder instead ??? I need to increase gaps between mounting points on yakima cargo box. I was thinking dremel the heck out of existing slots and reinforce afterwards with plastic welder ?
Thank you for posting this. My wife drove into a multi story car park with the roof box on the Car. I welded the outside with polystyrene cement and vinyl wrapped but did your method on the in side to strengthen it. Works a treat. Steve from the UK
Thanks... I'll have to pick up a tube... Can it be sanded after it dries? I intend to put on several coats, smooth it out with a disc sander and hit it with plastic spray paint.
Richard - My wife just tried to drive into an underground parking lot and our box is cracked, lots of shatter not just cracks. I just tried your fix above but did it on the INSIDE only so far. I wasn't sure if you are recommending to also do it on the OUTSIDE of the box, or is the white that you are showing on yours as a result of the material seeping out? Basically - question - should i also apply the PL on the exterior?
Hi... It's been a couple of years since the repair... Is it still holding up well? I just did a bonehead move and drove into my garage with my rocketbox so I need to make a similar repair
Hi, i did the same but used titebond premium polyurethane adhesive UK product..am not sure iff this is just same as PL..its been 3 days now and still not rock hard just like a gum..i messed it up i guessed..how can i get that PL please. Am in U
It's been more than a year now and the box is still holding together nicely. I should have painted the exterior of the box better (I just quickly spray bombed it) so there is a little flaking on the outside (I suppose from UV damage) could have been avoided by a good coat of paint. I'm still happy with the repair (given the cost of these boxes!
