This will be a must watch. I vote for the two stroke. There's a ton of these on boats for sale here and would be nice to see what it takes to save one from going to the junk yard.
Thank you for replying, says a lot about you and your team. On another note. Was wondering if you could maybe do a video on how to do some gel coat webbing. I did it on my boat and it came out decent wants to see your take on it, gun set up, high/low psi for diff patters. Thanks again for all your content, it’s freaking awesome!!
Old school 2 stroke is the way to go... love my 2 stroke Johnson fast strike 150hp.... bought it new in 1995 with my Lund ProV deluxe and a 15hp kicker... love this boat.
Floor issues? Ha- What floor?!? This one is gonna be great, Joe. Making popcorn and waiting eagerly for the next episode. Count my vote for a resto with the original two stroke- nothing beats the smell of a oil/gas cloud first thing in the morning.
2 Stroke has my Vote, and I just got a 2001 Kenner Pro Skiff 15 V nose with the tunnel hull. Has a 2004 Merc 2 stroke 25hp motor. I have found your channel a couple weeks ago and you are amazing at your craft sir. both in the boat world and teach us threw youtube. Supper excited for this new project. my project needs the stringers and floors done. Since finding your channel i now have the confidence to start it and give this boat a 2nd chance on the waters. Sound hull, and transom, bad floors and stringers.
Sounds like you have a great project boat and I am a big fan of anything Kenner made! Thanks for watching and your support of the channel is much appreciated!
Thank you Capt. Joe! What a great project boat!! I'm sure by the time you have finished this project, your followers will be confident in tackling any project boat. You are not only teaching useful skills, you're also getting boats like this back on the water, and keeping them out of the landfill.
As someone who is running one of the last great 2 strokes, get a 4 stroke. The noise and smell becomes intollerable. There are so many idle zones now and so many times and places to go slow, and you know, that's the 4 stroke's domain. Brapping and smoking does not enhance your chill when you are cruising around.
Really looking forward to this restoration, so much so that you have a new subscriber! I vote for fixing up the 2 cycle and replacing the casting deck! Looking to have a similar project soon
This looks interesting for sure !! I'm a fan of the old school 2 strokes and would like you to stay with the motor on the boat if it's cost effective to keep, but if you can't using what you have just makes the most sense !!
I suggest a casting deck forward in the bow with a nice storage compartment beneath. I’m super interested in making a mold to recreate a part (hatch possibly). I enjoy your style of teaching. You clearly discuss the subject and follow it with great visual example. Do you think a 6 inch wide stripe of dayglow orange down the keel would be hard to add. As a prior coastie, I know it would help from above. 👍
Thanks for your suggestions and thanks for watching! I hope to never flip her, but the orange stripe is a great idea for visibility in case it ever happened!
Cool. I think this will be a good series to follow. I vote for fixing up the old Yamaha. It would give everyone an idea of what is involved in getting an old engine going again. I feel it would fit the purpose of this project which is buying an old boat to restore. Most people won't have an extra engine laying around.
I love that you are doing this Project Boat series. I have a 14.5' Tri Hull that I got from a neighbor that is like a Whaler that was built in the Fort Meyers area. The Keel had a big hole in it that I patched, The transom was completely rotten, I have poured a sea cast to repair the transom, and the floor has been previously removed and has been removed again. The Stringers seem solid. I have a 70HP yamaha 2 Stroke that I picked up from another neighbor that compression tests good and seems to run strong. I have been working on it for way to long and Hurricane Ian set me back at least 1.5 years so I'm ready to get this done. Id be happy to share some pics and take any advise you might be willing to provide. Also had to rebuild the trailer completely.
Wow, sounds like you have already done a lot of work! Those 70 hp yamahas are great little motors, you should be happy with it. Glad you are enjoying the channel and I hope some of what we are doing will help you take it to the finish line!
+1 vote for the old 2 SMOKER. My 1995 Evinrude 90cv just ate a ring and already had ring damage on 2 other cylinders so I finally bit the bullet and pulled the motor. I found a 1980 Evinrude 140cv on Facebook Marketplace. Went and pulled it for a really dirt cheap price. I miked the cylinders, they were surprisingly good. Honed and rebuilt with new pistons and rings. I reused my 1995 electronics and dressup parts to essentially make this 1980 140cv a 1995 Evinrude 115cv. The Evinrude Crossflow (CV) motors were all the same 100ci displacement from 1979-1998. No matter the designation, IE 85, 90, 112, 115, 140...
This is awesome. Can wait to see all the work you will be doing to this rig. Keep up the good work. Many people like us out there wanting this kind out content. Thank you for all that you do !
Would like to see you replace the transom and and stringers, materials used and how “you” bed the stringers; also how you troubleshoot the engine to see if it’s worth saving and maybe a modern design deck
I like the 2 stroke. Have the same motor on a 20ft sailfish. It is a tough motor. If you do use it, I found a Stroud's marine in Greenville NC as a source for used parts with really good prices
I say you get rid of that 2 stroke. Part it out and put the money to another working 2 stoke or towards the Suzuki. I’m excited to see what I think should be a full redo. Take it back to OG because I see some work you may have to cover that you never have 🤷♂️ If you do go OG, I’d really be excited to see stinger, foam and transom work (liquid, coosa or wood) Ether way can’t wait.
Yes, it is a pretty major project! We have had lots of requests for floor, transom and stringer repairs, and this boat covers all those bases! I hope it's helpful and I appreciate you watching!
Great channel Joe! Would love to see the Mold build process! Materials, technique, resins etc. Do you prefer epoxy for the mold? Do molds last long? Thx! Keep up the great work.
When it’s time, I’de like to hear your thoughts on the deck grip paint “Kiwi grip” I’ve used it and thinks it’s great. But you see more products than I do. And 2 stroke for sure
@@FishBumpTV Thank you for the quick reply. Yes, silica is terrible for the lungs. Will definitely be wearing a mask or respirator. Thank you for the advise.
I vote for the two-stroke. Really miss fishing with the lower HP outboards in outpost fly-in camps. They were lighter and just easier to handle. And as far as stock or modify … my vote is modify for today’s best fishing configuration.
Hey man love the new project love your content! Is the engine for sale? I have some questions i'd love to ask you. Can i have a email where i can contact you privately? Much love from the Caribbean bro, blessings!
Thanks so much! Once we decide which motor to run, the 150 yamaha or the 200 Suzuki will be for sale. I can be reached through our patreon account if you would like. I appreciate you watching
Sir I have a question about a filler that I bought for a ding on my boat. You have not talk about this filler no more. The name of that filler is overcoat formula 27 for small dings in your boat. My question is is this product any good. Please let me know. I follyyour channel but if you said that a product is good and then no talk about that product no more. Something is wrong sir. Please let me know.
Formula 27 is still a good product, and have used it many times with good results. It can be just challenging to cover ever possible product in every video we make. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
Capt Joe Fish bump family This is exactly what kind of boat I believe the majority of people are fixing to show all the in's& outs restoring something like this look forward to seeing what kind of plans y'all are thinking about I would like to see the old 2 stroke back up and running with new paint and decals, there are so many boats sitting around that just need some TLC this can help so much for the Diyers, Thanks y'all!
Glad you are looking forward to our boats restoration! I Hope there will be some useful info that will help you with your own project boat! Thanks for watching and commenting
Praise the lord. About to do a transom floor rebuild on an old Kenner. Already learned a bunch about fiberglass from your channel. Gonna help me out a bunch.
Awesome !!! Yes I'm gonna love watching how this project turns out !... maybe the 200hp zuke would be a good option. .. the 2 stroke is also cool lol .. the 2 stroke would probably be easier and cheaper to get running .. but idk.
Drop the 2 stroke and go with the four stroke.. finish the boat the way you want with new twist you learned from building your last boat.. I’ll be watching either way you build it..
Good project boat. Maybe a little too rough for most of us out here but we’ve probably faced some part of your project at one time or other. I’d go for the 4 stroke. Doesn’t seem to make sense doing all that work and go backwards with the 2 stroke. When I do a console that looks like yours I order 1/4 inch black plastic panels cut to fit and with corner radius to screw down over the flat areas that have all the holes from previous mounting holes. You can then put in new instrument or switch holes. Saves a lot of filling and fairing trying to fill old holes or shapes. Good source for black panels is Boat Outfitters in FL.
Yes, it is pretty rough, but I figured it would cover a lot of topics. I agree, boat outfitters is a good company to sources parts and supplies from. I might do the panel overlay on the console, thanks for the suggestion!
We will be back on the project boat soon, but I have got to get this hardtop built for our charter boat first. The summer sun is brutal on an open boat like our 29. Hope you understand. Thanks for watching!
Looking forward for this project 🔥 for power I’m leaning towards the zuke 200 that’s a proven work horse plenty of torque & power I think it’ll bring a better resale as well, just my .02 👍looking forward to it I’m about ready to dive into a 1972 mako 19’ my dad had
Definitely looking forward to following this hull refurb (vs fresh build). Just finishing my transom and bracket restoration and my next step is putting the aft floors back together and then tackling some soft spots in front floor. I have a good feeling I could gain some good lessons watching how you do this. I really don't have a motor vote. I like two strokes, but I'm usually good with all motors and I came here for the hull project. Thanks Joe!!
J. Looking forward to this project. That said build it to your specs. As for the motor, She had her day. If you have something newer in mind I feel that would tie the bow. As always, will be watching.
Thank you for your videos! I know how much time it takes to film while you work!!! I to am in the business as you are kinda. I buy used Cobalt run about boats and repair any mechanical issues and totally do all my upholstery work myself. I also have replaced some transom’s with tear out of old wood and laminated new back in. Also did one in a bass boat using the pour in liquid composite transom. Both worked well and took lots of time. I visit in the Fort Morgan area about every year. If it ever worked out when I was down there to stop by your shop, it would be great to meet you. But I don’t want to interrupt your day and definitely don’t want to intrude. Thanks again.
This is gonna be so good i can't wait! Personally I would love to see you build a full transom and a small bracket but ill be watching regardless. Thank you!
Can't wait to see what happens but definitely like to see u replace the stringers and transom but also like to see fixing the gelcoat on a old boat like that and see what problems u run into fixing it back up. But excited to see what comes next definitely But u help alot ppl out here and we appreciate ur videos and effort and definitely the explaining of how to do it.
Thanks for the suggestion! Yes, I work on them mostly for myself and usually nothing major. I do have a friend that has an outboard repair business that we may bring in as a guest on the channel.
I am always excited to watch your videos. I am starting 1990 Sea Ray 200 with a 305 and alpha one restoration project. Trust me, I am paying close attention, especially to the fiberglass issues. I wish I could talk with you for advise when it comes time.
Thanks, glad you are enjoying the videos! The Sea Ray sounds like a great project boat! We have recently started offering one on one consulting through Patreon. We should have a link to that feature below our videos description. I hope that helps and best of luck with your project!
This is going to be absolutely fundamental for helping me through the rebuild of my shoalwater. Maybe you could go into detail with how you would rebuild the stringers. Mine are foam filled with no wood or structural composite. Just foam and fiberglass. Trying to decide how I want to go about rebuilding them. I’ll follow your lead if you show that!
And if this kind of series takes off you should consider taking in viewers boats to rebuild! I dont know how much money you make off the channel, or if it would be worth it for you to have people cover all material costs and you make money to cover your labor. Both sides could benefit… 👍🏼👍🏼
We have a 140hp Johnson V4. Has been completely rebuilt. Love the engine but it's a bit too heavy, 2 stroke smokey and tbh a bit too powerful, so we'll swap out for about a 100hp 4 stroke.
Looking forward to this boat you have, I am working on my 72 Mako 20 and following closely. My boat sat in a yard for most of its life it was only registered 2 years and the owner passed away. The transom is warped a bit and the deck has issues from sun.
@@FishBumpTV Tore out the floor, fuel tank and the floor storage compartments. Only water i found in the foam was a leak at the bow floor storage drain. Amazing to see a boat this old with no water stained foam at all. But the inside hull has the worst looking glass job Ive ever seen. Is this normal?
Great videos Joe ! Have learned a lot 🤙 Been working on my Anderson boat which I help build in 1990 at Anderson Custom Boats in Santa Barbara. I added a 2 ft extension. Iam at the final finish coat of Fiberglass Hawaii black gelcoat. I mixed 8 oz of gelcoat with a cap full of styrene wax and 90 drops of Mek. Still alittle tacky after 15 hrs but just prints not coming off on finger ! I live on North shore Kauai now so use to amount of hardener we need . Any thoughts? Aloha Rick 🤙
I have a 1963 glasspar citation 16 foot boat project what is the best way to bond the floor to the stringers ? It was made with hollow fiberglass stringers that are in perfect condition
