Thank you! I was able to order a band, and because of you video, I was able to fix the voice box of a Mrs Beasley doll. She’s talking now, and my wife is very happy!
Thank you. I have always wanted to know how the mechanism works. Back in 1970 we had a large Bugs Bunny. My Dad kept asking us 5 kids if we were tired of him yet. One day we reluctantly said yes and he did not hesitate to take it apart as he was dying to see how it worked. To this day I wish I had Bugs. Buy it made me so happy to see Dad so happy to perform surgery on him and enjoy it. He did stitch him back up but he never spoke again. Money was tight with our large family so Dad made sure to Thank us many times for our sacrifice.
Excellent video...I just picked up a Mrs. Beasley doll for $10.00(minus the glasses of course)and will see if I can get her talking again.....Then I can watch Family Affair on dvd and have her by my side and be just like old times.👍
This video is a life saver!! I recently bought a monkees puppet and had no idea how to fix it. Thanks to you i bought the o-ring and did all the inside cleaning, now my puppet is back to life thank you!!
Thanks for the brief and precise tutorial. My grandmother broke my bugs bunny by pulling the string too hard and 55 year laters later I realized I could find a replacement on Ebay. I know I'm going to rehab the voice box for a good deal.
How about cleaning with alcohol. That is what I use. I've fixed quite a few of the mattel talkers. I would not glue the talk box back together. I tape them. It would be a disaster to try and take it apart again to replace the belt when it melts again.
hey! same here, every bugs bunny i have found still talks, i can understand this if it is a small version ( like the chatter chum) because that talking box does not use an o-ring but the big ones all do, by the way, i am in venezuela and i found a spanish speaking bugs here, i could not believe my ears 😂😂
What type of clamp do you use for the string? I have fixed many pull string, talking dolls, but I've used lock up scissors and it has ruined the string. So please, tell me what type of clamp to use.
Very cool! I always wanted to know how these things worked without batteries. Now hopefully I can figure out how to repair my broken pull string on my Bernie Bernard plush.
Good morning! Thank you vm for this tutorial. I have a couple talk boxes I want to fix. Did Mattel use that same box for all of it's talkers at that time. If not, how ddi you figure out what size ring to use for the replacement? Have you found that any seller's rings work or last better than others? Thank you 💛
Is this usually the same problem as when the string gets stuck? I have a Chester O Chimp with a stuck string. I heard in a post that he uses toothed belts and not O rings? I can't find any videos or information online.
How do I get the coil back on if it unravels? Mine exploded while I was opening it so I didn't get the chance to hold it, and I'm not sure how to get it back on. It's like the last thing I need to do to get it completely fixed. Any suggestions?
Lots of luck. I dunno. It’s just one of those things where you have to take your time and keep any small children away - as you are bound to curse like a sailor.
I just wanted to show my kid the records inside of older talking toys. This was a fantastic video on repair! I wish I had one to repair after watching this video. Thanks for a practically perfect "how-to" video. (Next time, wear gloves?)
I can’t find those rings anywhere, probably because I can’t read the dimensions properly, and eBay has them but I rather get them from somewhere else, can someone list the right rings on amazon or something?
What if the puppet's voice box is only badly warped? I own a 1962 Mattel Talking Woody Woodpecker puppet and the audio is very slow and very warped. Do I follow a similar procedure or does it work differently?
I'm having a really hard time finding the O ring. I've gone to a couple of hardware stores and shown them the measurements but they were all confused. Tried googling it and can't seen to find a 2.5 inch diameter with 1.70 mm thickness.
I'd like to see a similar video on fixing a 1963 Mattel "Crackers" the talking parrot stuffed toy. The string goes thru his hard plastic feet . I pulled the string yesterday and felt (and heard) a pop and he can't talk since. The string still pulls but there's just the odd part of a word. He was part of the "animal yackers" series by Mattel. The mouth also moves when he talks so that would be good to see covered by a fix-it video. Thanks.
OMG I have the evil guy Boris from Rocky and bullwinkle and he still talks - so does my baby whispers. I wish I had not passed up on talking barbies - but they never talk and I have seen they are hard to fix.
Thank you for this! Your video is of of a handful that my son and I are very grateful for. We have tried to fix a couple of these ourselves, but we have hit a roadblock on a couple of them, and we're hoping you may be able to help. When it comes to the record piece, and the metal piece that connects to it (holding the string in place) what do you do if the two of them have separated from one another. We have messed around with it quite a bit, but we cannot figure out how to get the two pieces together, and we're feeling pretty hopeless at this point. Any suggestions? We would really appreciate it!
No. It's the clutch. It's the metal piece on top of the record piece. When it's NOT broken, it's just ONE piece, but at times, I've seen them separate. There are three bearings that came out with it, so I'm going to monkey around with it and see what happens.
Thanks for the video! It brings memories from my childhood! And also for making me discover your channel. Any place today to buy these pull/talk mechanisms? I'd like to create my own toys for my children :)
So, my son eventually came up with a way to fix the pull-string doll I was commenting to you about a year ago. He decided to remove the record completely from the doll and switch it out with another one we had. It wasn't ideal, because we had to sacrifice a Porky Pig, but at least he found a way to make it work. He took the record off of the mechanism, removed the other record from the Porky Pig doll, and swapped the two. Also, if you're interested, here's a video of my son's vintage doll collection and some of the videos he's made of fixing them. ru-vid.com/group/PLiD4Ij1qrg2as6cG7GjdEhuRle0ANDYfn Thanks for the inspiration!
Couldn’t get it to work again, got so frustrated I ended up smashing the damn doll to pieces, well you need to break a few eggs to learn, now I can restore most Mattel dolls
Thanks. Much help ... preparing to fix a Mattel - Monkees (TV band) talking hand puppet. I'm ready now. ....... 5 days later ... UPDATE -: It works! Thanks again.
I had the same talkbox but inside a different monkey. It was a whole monkey and was brown. A french monkey! Have you seen that version, and is it also mattell, or was it another company using those voice boxes??
Maybe if I had Lava or something, I coulda done a better job....I used the same f***in' soap you did and when I got finished, the towel didn't look like no god-damn Maxi-Pad.
