If you have cardboard, you can cut them to fit the space inside the storage area, then wrap the ribbon/lace around the cardboard, use a pin to hold the edge, and they work really well. That's how I store all my free ribbon/lace.
I have to get myself those boxes that zip! I have a small place with no storage; the landlord put the hot-water tank in my bedroom closet. Lucy, you don't have too much stuff your living in a small space. We have to live! Minimalist and being someone who creates do not mix; just my opinion. Sewing patterns, after using them, I fold them then iron them flat before returning them to the envelope; this saves a ton of space. I put my knitting patterns into those clear sleeves that fit into a 3 ring binder, this keeps them neatly stored. I put things everywhere; under the bed, under and behind the sofa. My problem at the moment is finding a way to store my yarn... I am thinking of old suitcases stacked on top of each other. I have an antique doll's trunk, and it is full. :P You have a lot of great storage ideas that I will be borrowing. I hope my little tricks help you as yours have helped me. Have an amazing creative week, xoxo's Sandie
😅As someone who has tried organizing thread in boxes, I highly recommend getting a thread rack! Some can be kind of pricey, but even getting a small, cheaper one for your most frequently used threads can be so helpful!
I use the insert of a fishing tackle box! There are a lot of sections/slots was that I can put groups of colored threads into, and it fits inside a narrow drawer :)
I really can relate to the lack of space; I own a 432 square foot house, it’s 12ft by 32ft and it has lots of windows, so taken up this revolving gallery idea, because I have a lot of art pieces I want to display. So once a month I take down what is on the walls and put up something else, the next month I do the same thing and so on. It works out well for me, and I can still see everything
I keep all my threads in glass jars of various sizes, organized into color. It's both aesthetically pleasing and super practical. I can find the threads I need in seconds and I have easy overview over which I might need to buy more of. Just thought I'd share in case anyone needs ideas :)
I’m planning on doing some organisation this week. Maybe for the thread you could stand the threads upright or even sideways, because then piled could be taking up room. You could stack the most used threads on the top of the box so you can easily access them. This was a nice, calm video.
Thread spools can be hung on a wall. As far as your art collection goes, look up at gallery wall ideas. It is a maximalist look, but it can work when the rest of the area organized like a minimalist look.
I too have had to institute a "don't bring it home unless a) there's already room for it b) you know who you'll be giving it to c) something else goes" rule for similar reasons, I feel awful throwing out stuff that's still got some use left in it and most of what I've got isn't in good enough condition that the donation depot won't just bin it... I'm forever trying to give suff away to people who need things. At least most of my hobbies don't take up that much room and a lot of it has stuff in common. I also have a pet peeve, it seems every time I do pick up some thing I haven't needed in 10 years and decide to get rid of it, I need it two weeks later... so that's how I've ended up with too much crap stuffed into too small a house. Unfortunately when you move to a bigger place, the clutter breeds, so keep your rule when you have more space!
You should get a shallower container for the thread where you can easily see them all because you'll have to dump out that container when you need to find a color.
This is perfect, just the inspiration I needed! Almost a week ago now, I decided that I would reorganize my fabrics and proceeded to dump it all on the living room floor... And well... there they stayed. I have been climbing over the mountain of fabric every time I need to get to the kitchen, it's honestly embarrassing 🙈but now maybe I will get to it...😅
I am currently in the process of moving and I'm at the stage it feels like it's better to just give up because nothing works out and this video cheered me up alot so thank you
I feel you Lucy, we have the same problem, we are a 4 person household living in a 48 square meter apartment because the housing market in our area is so bad at the moment, and even if we don't have a lot of stuff it feels like a mountain of stuff just because we are so many people in such a small apartment. I always look back on the housing history to cheer myself just a little up. Like back in the 1930's in Stockholm Sweden, an apartment of the size of 25 square meters would go for 1 million SEK and was considered big enough for a family of four.
Ive been planning on buying organizing boxes and cabinets for my sewing room, this video is a sign for me to do it! Im so excited to go to ikea for the first time! The first ikea store in the philippines opened recently and i still cant beleive how affordable it looks online, im also cant wait to buy 3 lamps and a desk too!
Have fun. If you go in a car (assuming you will to get a desk) take a big bottle of water with you. I always come out desperately thirsty. Some people hate the ikea instructions. I love them myself. But fun fact: you can look at the instructions for each item on the website before you buy it so you can decide if you think it is something you can build. I’ve saved myself a lot of stress by doing this.
First time IKEA! You'll have a ton of fun! When I was still living really close to one, I would sometimes just wander around in there for fun on a rainy afternoon 😅 Love IKEA 💖
Loveee when you do these kinds of videos. Commenting before I watch to say that if you do a spring cleaning, I’d love a repeat of that spring cleaning video you did maybe a couple years ago!!
I put all my small seweing supplies into transparent boxes and I add a list on top on which I write whats in it. E.g.: buttons, flowers, rubber band, lace, fabric color etc., because I always forget where I stored what. Also, I totally feel your struggle to throw out stuff. Thats why I started upcycling all my old clothes. I sew since 1,5 years now and have not bought any new fabric for it.
Thank you for sharing this! As a fellow human in a small apartment that runs a sewing business…. It is a challenge! I try to be as minimal as possible. But books and sewing things I actually do need/enjoy. Best of luck on the house search! I am in the same boat. Still looking. (USA is awful right now for home buying :(
I have the same problem with getting attached to things. I think it started when I was a kid and people would tell me to cherish gifts and whatever else. Now its common to toss things and declutter, which makes sense. But I get anxious throwing stuff away. I like to recycle or try to fix things if I can so its not just thrown away. And dont like feeling like I am throwing money away. Ironically there are a quite a few things that people have given me that I have no attachment to bc I either already have something like it or its not my style but I would be able to use it. So I either try to sell things or give them away. I have a couple of fb groups Im a part of where people give things away to neighbors in the city, nearby city. They just come pick it up if they are intetested. Which has been nice. Theres also a spot where people leave furniture or small knick knacks, so that has been fun to leave stuff and watch ppl take it.
I have the exact same problem. Two weeks later I want or need the items I just got rid of and have to turn around buy them again so I am wary about getting rid of anything. Sounds really bad but that’s how it goes. I would love to get these things out of the house!
I totally agree with you on the minimalism vs art topic! If you're an artist/crafter/sewist etc I think it is really good to keep things around 'just in case' because I have very often benefited from things I kept around! Of op zijn Nederlands 'wie wat bewaart die heeft wat';)
Yes, homes in the USA are huge. I started painting home 20 + years ago. Average home back than 1500-2500 sq feet. Now the average home I’m painting is 2500-4000 sq feet That is crazy big. When I go back into the home after a year warranty, usually they have so much stuff I have to crawl over the stuff to get where something got patched and need to touch up. Keep in mind USA homes also have 490 -1500 sq foot garages attached. Hidden/ safe rooms not measured or talked about and then the attics on top of all that. That all being said, I’m more like you in keeping hobby supplies and I go back around to them. I’m currently in a house I rent out to people but I decided to move into to work on it, -/+ 900 sq feet, my adult kids asked me to move back to my 2900 sq foot home. Lol it’s to big, since I only live with my standard schnauzer. It’s a waste and I’m not home a lot or enough to need that big. Plus my dog doesn’t like cleaning. ;/
You should get a thread organizer they come in all sizes, some can hang on the wall but I'm sure some could also be stored in a drawer. That would really help with the thread issue, you would be able to see all the colors and how much of each thread you have without digging through that drawer.
I am the saaaame way with my acoustic guitar! I live in an apartment building with thin walls and I don't want to disturb my neighbors. My friends and family all say to still do it, but I just can't.
I understand you we have the same situation. That's why I also don't wanna get rid of my arts stuffs bc I will be coming back to use them. I think what u need is a new big place with good storage. I hope u get a new home one day and me too ❤️
I literally just organized my townhouse condo the other day. I'm the same as you: I can't get rid of things that are still good or I might use in the future. I've decluttered as much as I can, but there's only so much I can do until we move to a bigger place. I still have things at my parents' place... I wouldn't compare yourself to the American youtubers. They're only a small few and their living situations aren't realistic. I do have some suggestions for you: try hanging your patterns with pattern hooks, use a wall-mounted thread hanger, and hang your sewing supplies using the pegboards from IKEA. Would you be able to do a house tour? I'd love to see how you organize your space.
I did a home tour on here not too long after we moved in, but there's a more recent one in pictures on my blog. The apartment looks more or less the same now, with a couple small changes in decor (and we no longer have the rat cage): loepsie.com/2020/02/home-tour-2020-update/
If you want to put up a lot of art in a smaller space, you could put up picture rails (just search that in RU-vid). There are great ideas for either hanging pictures from the rails or using the rail as a shelf to arrange the pictures on.
I cross fingers that you'll find a big apartment or house soon (as was your dream)! I remember living with my then boyfriend in a tiny apartment, we made it fit, but my partner is just so tall, it was like living in a doll house for him 😂 the skubb organisers are a life saver, though
I live in the US in an average size home, about 150 square meters. I was watching your spring cleaning video the other day and thinking how much easier it is to clean a small home! Lovely video, I enjoyed it!
But disantvantages: gets dirty quickier, because you use the space more frequently,so same cleaning time. you have no space to storage stuff, conquering about the space all the time and Sometimes( to often) yelling at roomates, because they are in your lane. Sometimes you can't even think of following a special hobby, because...no space or something else has to go.
I agree with you on your thoughts about owning thinks. The things I get I get for a reason and it feels wasteful to get rid of it if it’s still usable to me.
The curse of the multi-crafter: where do you put it all between phases??? I have the same problem with quilting/sewing/crochet/art/doll making/embroidery/writing, etc.
I'm the opposite of a minimalist. What's a house if you can't fill it with what you love? I'm not talking about hoarding, just a house filled with things that make you happy.
often times, i am the same as you and dont want to get rid off stuff that is perfectly fine. but at some point, practicality trumps emotions and it has to go. i like to put it in a box next to the garbage bins and mostly other people will just take stuff out of it if they are interested
Regarding music, you shouldn't keep yourself from practicing because of neighbours. Pick a definite time, so it becomes a routine for them as well (ex: Wednesday from 14:00 to 16:00) and have fun!
Oh I'm not worried about the noise, I'm embarrassed! 😂 I'm one of those people who flip out when someone sees their unfinished project. People can't see/hear what I'm doing until it's perfected (aka "good enough"). Funnily enough sewing doesn't count 🤔 But yeah, the idea of someone hearing me play the same children's tunes wrong over and over again is horrifying
I agree with you that is seems sooo uncomfortably wasteful when people consistently just throw away things they aren't using consistently. I would rather have some clutter and full storage with items I may only use every couple years than regularly buy and rebuy and rebuy same/similar items. It makes the overall costs and the carbon footprint of the hobby or activity go up. But also, I think it's important to note that there's an easily traced line between fascistic ideology and the near Puritanical obsession with minimalism that began budding in the 30s and has seen a sharp growth since like 2010. It makes me uncomfortable to see large, basically empty and mostly cream/white colored spaces. Your home is absolutely allowed to be colorful, a little full, and containing things you don't use at least once a week.
You have way to much stuff going on! Wow! Might need to think on using what you've got. Buy less and give up stuff you never ever use to a Charity. Or sell at craft fairs
