Fixing Yeva’s steering

I am so pleased to be able to say that I’ve fixed Yeva’s steering issue. It’s been two days of back-breaking contortionist-style positioning inside the steering locker and my arms feel like they could fall off, but she’s fixed and it feels amazing. Few more things to tinker with over the next couple of days, but this one was the biggest job on the list and I’m so relieved it’s sorted now. 😀

I've watched many sailing vids, and it strikes me that they tend to only have these tiny hammers. I'd get myself a nice two to four pound piece of hardware, called by Wikipedia "A drilling hammer, club hammer, lump hammer, crack hammer, mini-sledge or thor hammer". I call it my "precision adjuster" - if any piece of hardware gives you lip, you give it a couple of whacks with that thing - problem solved. Oh, and congrats on solving that issue, I'm just trying to be supportive and helpful.

Ella , a good idea is to keep a bung in that rear steering locker in the event of a failure of the steering shaft . I've seen a few reports of ships sinking due to rudders falling of which leaves a large hole in its place . Bon voyage

The more I watch your videos the closer I get to buying a sailboat again. Great level of satisfaction after fixing an issue yourself. Brits call stainless worm drive clamps "Jubilee clips"? Well, I guess you did invent the language. Inventor's prerogative. 😀 Keep up the great work, and thanks for posting your videos!

Well done! That design is a week. Weight being carried by the grub screws isn’t ideal. Not what they are designed for. A lean goth of bronze, brass or even PVC pipe can be split lengthwise and clamped over the rudder post. This will act as a spacer preventing a loose grub screw from allowing the steering collar to drop down off of the key and keyway . Add lock tight.(blue) to the grub screw threads as well. Replace grub screws next time you are home.

As the man said; if it’s all working, there is probably still something broken. You just don’t know it yet 🤭 But you’re very handy, I must say 💪🏻👍🏻

Great effort champ😊. I carry a tiny pneumatic bottle jack for lifting shafts in enclosed spaces. Also a huge trolly jack and a whole raft of block tackle and slings too. Good job buddy 🙏👋🫡

Sometimes one of the set screws is placed right over the keyway to secure the key. If it is fully removed, it might make resetting the shaft position easier. Great job, I am awed by your vision and wish you the best.

Take the grubscrews out, one by one, and bore into the shaft. Just a tiny bit, to make a small indentation for the point of the grubscrew to sit into. Then use Loctite or similar on the grubscrews. Do it once, do it right, never need to do it again... Well impressed so far, keep it up!

@Iainb1954 thanks! Definitely plan to do that but not here in Longyearbyen as a bit far from help if I mess it up 😅 Definitely on my list of improvements/reinforcementd to make though 👍

@@ellainthearctic Hard to mess up. Just use a drill bit size that slips in without touching the threads, bore 2mm in. Done. Edit to add: You're surrounded by 'pioneering' types, most of the people who live in remote places are a)pretty handy, and b)pretty helpful. Don't be afraid to ask for help, ships engineers are usually helpful and resourceful...

Well done. She looks pretty basic, just bits of steel…so you should be able to fix things anywhere. One concern, is that rudder shaft tube not below waterline? Ie relying on a rubber seal? If so hope you have serviced that and have a spare. And I trust it is all within a sealed watertight compartment. (Hate to say it, but you can’t beat a simple tiller)

The fastest and most definitive solution is to weld (well) a piece of bar right below so if it fals again it will sit on it and doesn't get off the key. Another option that could be bettee but requires lowering the shaft (so putting the boat on hard etc) is making an outer sleeve of the shaft and the key up to the steering arm....so it sits on top of it and can't lower (more or less like it has been done on the top of it for avoiding going to high). In any case it's really badly engineered. I guess it has been added in a second time but not well exectued

Great job, I’ve been doing a similar job on my boat. Cleaning the shaft more with Emery cloth and using a lump hammer would have worked better. More weight in the hammer means less swing needed. Or a small, bottle Jack to force it up. Anyway, all done now so you did a great job. So lucky that didn’t happen at sea. As someone said get a piece of pipe, even plastic, that you can cut length ways to strap around the shaft below the quadrant. It can’t slip down then. Andy UK

@@AndyUK-Corrival hi Andy, thanks for commenting. Had to make do with what I had at the time but now have a small list of other tools to pack on board! It absolutely did happen at sea - 2 1/2 days away from Longyearbyen, in Svalbard, which is where I did this fix and am currently. Luckily for me I have a Hydrovane, so I managed to make it to port using that. All the best, Ella

@@ellainthearctic Hi Ellain, understood, not like you have a big diy store handy there I suspect. Oh wow, good job then if it happened at sea. Thank heavens for Hydrovane. Hoping I might get to Longyerben one day but youth is not on my side! All the best, Andy UK
