5:53 is when Todd comes in hawt with those Dragonlance questions. Kinda makes a fella wonder if we will get a campaign setting as one of the “classic” settings WotC/ D&D has been talking about.
@Reoh0z
@Reoh0z 2 года назад
Yes, WotC said we're getting 2 classic settings next year. Also, Weis & Hickman are pitching their own Dragonlance 5e [edit: campaign] book. I'm not sure what their deal is with WotC with that there's been a lot of legal disputes that were resolved recently and may be a factor into what adds up to, "Yes, Dragonlance is coming."

I’ve never needed permission or explanation to borrow from other settings, so while an ancient and defunct prime world is a neat idea, I’m still cautious that developing multiverse lore too far will pressure all Wizards settings to fit the same cosmography instead of being wildly different.

What I notice most about this First World lore is that it flatly contradicts fundamental elements of Nerath lore (the 4th Edition prime setting), all but making Nerath non-canonical (or at least requiring a MASSIVE retcon). Specifically, Nerath lore states that Bahamut and Tiamat were the halves of Io when he got split by a primordial. There's two-page picture of the confrontation and everything.
@AzraelThanatos
@AzraelThanatos 2 года назад
It also seems to mess with the Vorel stories about what caused the split between the two...and Tiamat's other sister she murdered.
@SmileyTrilobite
@SmileyTrilobite 2 года назад
0:29 He calls it “a myth of the origin of the prime material plane”, and I find the word “myth” leaves a good door open. Published Wizards products could also find a way around it the way Eberron still exists with a different planar model than FR.

Interestic ideas to ponder. Good question about Bahamut's and Tiamat's presence on various worlds. That doesn't seem to align smoothly with the great wyrm echoes. I wonder where the three creator dragons of Eberron and it's micro-cosmology fit into all of this. The same goes for the "dragons" of Athas and overdeities like FR's Ao. Speaking of two-letter deities: I suppose Io / Asgorath isn't canonic anymore?
@gyorgyor7765
@gyorgyor7765 2 года назад
This new lore doesn't fit with preexisting lore of any setting. For one thing, the Dragon Gods are very much Gods in FR as in during the ToT they got booted to Faerun like all the other Gods (except the 4 Elemental Lords for some reason). Needless retcons. They could have merged this first world idea in much better then they did.

So is Eberron a child of Tiamat and Bahamut or is she an equal to them?
@AZURAKAZ
@AZURAKAZ 2 года назад
It gets dicey when you look at Eberron's lore and compare it to what they're pitching in the main line releases. Eberron's progenitor only exist in the past in dragon form; preferring omnipresence to corporeality. Khyber, Eberron, and Siberys were not given stats or personae; whereas Bahamut and Tiamat are.
@johnhuffman9533
@johnhuffman9533 2 года назад
Siberys, Eberron, and Khyber could be the alternate names for Bahamut, Sardior, and Tiamat in that world, and those entities just interact with said world in a drastically different way.
@Alexa_Temujin
@Alexa_Temujin 2 года назад
Well Tiamat is another name for the Overlord the Daughter of Khyber, in general I think it wouldn't work (specifically within the faith followed by Eberron's Dragons Thir), unless Eberron was the 0th world (or whatever the world before the first world would be called), as Thir doctorine states that Siberys, Eberron, and Khyber came from the world before Eberron where they were simple dragon gods to make the new world, under them were the mortal's gods which were ascended dragons, who some become the new dragon gods in Eberron (which includes Tiamat and Bahamut), and then dragons since have ascended to become the sovereign host. So if you are a good enough dragon in life, you can go on to become one of the sovereign host, if you are good enough in the sovereign host, you would be a dragon god in the next world, and in the world following that you could potentially be its creator. Given the regular dragon pantheon and dragon gods in Eberron, it would be expected they create the next world, and so if Bahamut and Tiamat created the first world (of the current multiverse) Eberron should predate it. We also know this isn't true in the wider WotC canon (even if it may be within Eberron), as Eberron is mentioned to be a valid destination in dream of the blue vale, and I believe some other stuff within Tasha's showing crossover with it and planescape if I remember correctly. So I guess either the dragons within Eberron will be heavily retconned to fit with the modern view of dragons, or the lore contradicts itself as they suddenly have knowledge of other material planes and stuff, and actually have proof of divinity of their gods which is antithetical to Eberron focusing on faith in religion, not proof of religion. Slight edit: the dragons could be wrong in Eberron lore, but if the whole echoes thing mattered to them then they would know of the wider picture of reality instead of being limited in their perspective. They would know of bits of the wider world. They honor the dragon gods which now are just great wyrms, when they themselves at least commonly reached it as an age rank, though I guess the current design doesn't tie it to age. So, unless their faith is strong enough that it has survived hundreds of thousands of years while in conflict with what they can learn through their echoes, or now their is some shadowy cabal of dragons at the top of their society that maintains this wrong faith for some reason (which wasn't mentioned in Dragons of Eberron which had content all the way up to epic levels and readily described Dragon Society), it makes no reason for it to exist in its current form, at least with the hierarchies as they present it.

@@Alexa_Temujin I tend toward a closed Eberron setting. I'm currently getting ready to run Dread Metrol and have opted for it to be in the plane of Mabar; rather than Metrol being transported to the Demiplanes of Dread. I have all kinds of love for other settings. I just don't like it getting in my Eberron for some reason.
@Alexa_Temujin
@Alexa_Temujin 2 года назад
@@AZURAKAZ I mean, my Eberron's have been closed for all intents and purposes (though like if the players really wanted to, they could find ways). The thing is in the overall canon, things seem to be shifting to an open Eberron. Now I am not sure how it looks like in Wizards minds since Eberron is generally assumed to be closed, maybe it just opened, and at the same time the multiverse is aware of it, dragons are learning of the multiverse, but I kind of doubt that. Also not related but Dread Metrol is a lot of fun, though mine exists in an alternate prime Eberron accessible through the weird timeline nonsense of Xoriat, as a result of the BBEG being curious what was happen if various parties in the war were given some ridiculous magic items, while the mourning was prevented due to the diverging timelines (if the PCs do nothing, the greater tree of Eberron canons will be effectively destroyed in the narrative of the game).

Keep this in mind: Canon in D&D only matters per DM. Basically every DM gets to decide what is Canon and what is not. This "First World" idea may be the truth in some campaigns, but not in others. Also remember that Tiamat is historically a Babylonian God. Yup, a real historical mythology that was worshipped by real people. Some campaigns reflect this and not the demonic D&D version. These books are great material, but don't ever take their stories as hard truth.

Unfortunately, all of that seems to have been “removed” from the current canon with their announcement that nothing stated before 5e is canon earlier this year. However, you can choose to either modify or ignore the myth of the First World (it is a myth after all, just like the ones about Vorel, Tiamat’s sister, the spheres of concordance, or Zotha and the Renegade)

I have a 3.5 world where they know of 5th edition worlds and how creation going to them, is destroying this 3.5 universe, there is a dragon trying to escape to the new folds of creation using a phane (epic lvl handbook) trapped in a shard of the last universe it had eaten. A giant black mirror inside the cauldera of an island volcano, that can show you anything. Guarded by a greedy and manipulative great worm red dragon known only for the scar on the cleft of his chin as Scarcleft.

Hmmm... think I prefer the AD&D 1e "explanation": "There are an infinite amount of Prime Material Planes, and your campaign is just one of them. Each one is different, sometimes barely noticeable, sometimes strikingly vast, but each is still based on the AD&D game". .. The "First World" explanation reeks of desperation to try and "link everything back to one IP that WotC can control"...but don't feel bad, I feel the same way about Sigil/Planescape. I'm an old dog just like James here (actually born in the same year, '69, but I didn't start playing until 1980).
