I think it may work in two ways. Maybe he can successfully appeal. But maybe he can actually avpid death penalty thanks to representing himself. If you think about it, most defendants just sit there and we hear everyone else talk about their crime. A few of them testify, but that's not a lot of time. Here we have a defendant basically perform a job and be relatively ok at it (for a defendant with no law degree of course), and be respectful enough. The jury see him doing it day after day. He becomes more of a person, and it may just make sentencing him to death ever so slightly harder for the jury. Who knows.

Establishing reasonable doubt. Also revealing how twisted the justice system is. You have a detective that was abled to adopt a child that is actively involved in an open case that he investigated. Also the child’s deposition statements are contradicting statements made at the crime scene. There’s way too many holes in this case and O’Neal’s cross-examination has clearly revealed that. I’m speaking from an unbiased perspective because everyone is innocent until proven guilty in the court of law and they also have the right to represent themselves if they wish. He may be guilty, he may not be guilty but it’s up to the jurors to decide… unbiasedly.

Insanity is incredibly difficult to prove. He’s not an effective lawyer, but he’s not insane. He knows the purpose for being there is a court case and he’s acting as an attorney in self defense. He’s not acting like someone who doesn’t know where he is. Is he’s not acting like he doesn’t know what year it is or that he’s in court. He’s a horrible person but he’s not insane.
