I am not sure about how desirable these guys would be at the deadline tbh. Plus I am hoping we leave a lot of spots open for young guys. If we want to weaponize our cap space I think I would rather take on a bad contract for a guaranteed return.

These articles are mainly filler articles put out in the dog days of the offseason. This is not weaponizing cap...this is signing a player to a 1 year deal on low cost contracts with the hope of trading them for a good price and rolling the dice that the return will outweigh the ice time they take from a prospect(who you could also potentially trade for higher value if wanted). The Nylander one is about the only one that makes some sense in my eyes. I would nearly bet my house that they don't sign a 34 year old C with a potential small return(it's very unlikely to be a big one) instead if giving time to try Pospisil, Morton, Schwindt at C. The spots will be kept for prospects or a young a player that is signed or trafed for. We have already done this anyway with our free agent signings.We can actually weaponize our cap by trying to take on a contract that is breaking the back of a team that is going for it or wants to go for it this year. Conroy has pretty much said this anyway in multiple interviews.

Are the Hockeywriters considered a good source? So far, I haven't read an article from them that was informative and usually have their facts wrong. I don't like this idea, if these guys aren't getting signed I don't see them bringing in any assets at the deadline, it would tie up a spot for a young guy while probably ending up as a waiver getting paid to much to be an AHLer. I might take a flyer on Nylander just because he is still young, but I think we may have better on the farm.
