I picked up my Flames of War Bulge British pre-orders from Battlefield Hobbies at the weekend. Excited to open up the new British Starter and decided to record it, I also recorded a video review of the book and cards, that will be out in a few days.

While the Ram tank was not used as a combat tank, Sexton sections did use them as an OP tank. So two starter boxes would give a full battery of eight Sexton SPG with two OP Ram tanks for us Canadian players. :)

Excellent review, as usual Stuart, and thanks! Being a Canadian, living in the USA, I will buy this box and build them as Canadians. Also, I noticed the price you paid was 72 Pounds which is $80.20. Based on the current exchange rate, pound/dollar I have been buying a lot of miniatures from the UK and will do the same for this set as the price here is $110. With shipping cost it will still come out to just under $100!

Heyo, incase you werent aware and just as a warning, canadians never made use of the Comet tank, charioteer, cromwell or any other tanks in this box except the Ram kangaroo, and even then we only used them with the fixed 30caliber and not the small turret. We made use of shermans for the entire war, shifting to m10 tank destroyers after and then reequipping with easy 8 shermans in Korea before getting the centurion for the cold war.

Yeah it’s not really a very historical combo as a single list. For me. I think it will start multiple forces of different themes.

Thanks for this Stuart, I bought the set too and looking forward to building them. It probably won't be until next year as I want to build a US Battalion and a mid/late war German Battalion... then a late war British army

Excellent unboxing review as always Stuart. These starter sets are always excellent ways to start an army. Myself Im sticking to Battlegroup over FoW, and this in light of the new Westwall Book about to release from Plastic Soldier Company and Battlegroup, this set is definitely on my radar for the very late war British. Really like the British comet tank, and thats the only thing really that Im a bit critical about this set. Would have been nice to do all comet turrets. But still a great set.

Great review and tempted to make a British force to add the my Flames of War/ O Group armies. But trying to resist till I get those Russians built and painted after the Germans. The starter sets offer fantastic value and nice to see infantry included.

@@MiniatureRealms Well since I mostly play armored list with my americans and plan to do hungarian infantry, I rather do something else for the british and then you have armored cards or armoured infantry. Since armored infantry is more fun with the germans since you can take a KT platoon as a formation platoon, I will go armored car for the british. Will be fun to paint a lot of dingos.

Hi - Excellent work. I think this is the way i want to go having decided against War of the Roses based on the sheer size and scope of what you can buy and play under this system. Quick question - what in your view is better to start with (1) An army starter set x2 or (2) One of the themed box sets like Kursk etc?

Thank you 🙂 To answer your question, for me it comes down to what army do you personally want to do first yourself. If you compromise on that for for value, you may find you run out of passion for the project before you move on to later stages. For historical gaming I like to collect opposing armies, so the two player sets are often a great place to start, but if you have an opponent lined up then working on just one army might be the way to go, then you will likely have more of what you might need for yourself. Some of the starter sets have less than you need/can field at full size for a formation or a unit, so getting two sets can be good. It’s worth checking what you may need to add extra of before you purchase a second set though, or you could end up with way too much of things you will never use. If you’re planning on a decent sized collection/army with multiple options then this might now matter, but if you’re looking a small focussed forces then moving on to something else, that might not work. So have a think about what you’d like to include etc. Maybe grab one set, start to read up and work out your direction before you add the second.

@@MiniatureRealms I have decided to go mid - late war and because i like infantry, I'm going to plunge for the Stalingrad starter set. I thought 'hit the beach' had more bang for your buck but i decided to go East. What i would find helpful is "what would you recommend as a good allrounder paint set to cover off most of what i need to paint this up to a basic standard. I have not done any figure painting for over 20 years and i can see things have changed a lot !!!. Thanks and great channel - it is my goto one for the hobby. I noted the one about brushes which i will re watch once i get the goodies......

Going Eastern isn’t a bad idea at the moment, there’s two great starter sets, and it’s the Eastern terrain that seems easiest to get as well. Paint set wise the only Soviets I’ve painted are Bolt Action Tanks, so not sure what to suggest for infantry - at least based on stuff I’ve used. However, I would say that the Colours of War book from Battlefront is excellent, the general hobby guides are very good, and the nation by nation painting guides are fantastic. They use Vallejo Model colour paints as examples, and Vallejo do nation specific paint sets that seemed to be aimed at Flames of War players. So I’d suggest that route.
