Chief Scientist Carl Nelson demonstrates how to set ice on fire using calcium carbide.
A tiny amount of calcium carbide at the bottom of the glass reacts with water from the melting ice. Flammable acetylene gas is produced and creates a "burning ice" effect. The gas collects in pockets between the ice cubes and flame dances back and forth between the pockets.

Oh, crud. My dad was a chemist, and had calcium carbide in the garage. I wish I had known about this as a kid, LOL! Maybe it's a good thing I didn't.
