‘What you think is the point is not the point at all but only the beginning of the sharpness.’
The Philosopher’s Book Club is back! We discuss Flann O’Brien’s The Third Policeman, a novel about the consequences of a murder occasioned by the narrator’s desire to publish a book about his favourite philosopher, de Selby. From bicycles and wooden legs to dualism and the nature of reality, O’Brien’s absurdist tale contains more philosophical themes (and footnotes) than you can shake a stick at. Philosophical and literary minds come together to answer the question, ‘Is it about a bicycle?’.
Speakers
Paul Fagan, Editor, The Parish Review: Journal of Flann O’Brien Studies & Founder, The International Flann O’Brien Society
Clare Moriarty, Fellow, Forum for Philosophy & IRC Postdoctoral Fellow, Trinity College Dublin
David Papineau, Professor of Philosophy, CUNY
Recorded on 25 February 2020 at the LSE

This is a great conversation on a great book! I have just finished reading it and I’ve just started rereading again straight after!

I don't know why David Papineau is on this forum. He doesn't seem to have much to offer on the literary content or to have read the book very deeply, only focusing the philosophical points and dismissing the actual humorous narrative as not important. He hasn't even researched the pronunciation of the characters' names!

I think he's what happens when someone without a sense of humour reads O'Brien...

@Johnconno Indeed ! In fact it says as much in the notes. Well, it says Professor of Philisophy, but I think in a discussion of matters which involve playing fast and loose with such things as 'the truth' we can infer otherwise.

This was my favorite novel after Samuel Beckett's WATT.

@@MGrube-qq9ju I read WATT my first year of college and then as part of my Smith College music composition class we were allowed to have professional musicians perform our music. The back of the book WATT features his own music - mainly lyrics. So when I put that to music - my film buddy was with me - when the professional singer lady practiced the song and said, "Are you sure you want me to sing these notes?" He thought it was hilarious. Samuel Beckett could not get that book published as he wrote it as therapy from his trauma of the Nazis - and all the publishers though the book was too crazy or absurd - even after Beckett's more popular books or plays. So reading WATT is not easy - and when I read it I was pretty much a hermit. So I was able to enjoy the book as it required a lot of solitude. People try to dismiss the book as it was expressive of some corporate-state Big Pharma mind control drug disease (that's now so palatable due to mass mind control marketing). Pretty tragic that Samuel Beckett's great testimony to the absurdity and evil of modern civilization still gets dismissed to some fake paradigm of false debate.

A very interesting discussion, but I can't help but notice that Paul and Claire are using Australian and American 'upspeak', that is, where statements are delivered as questions. If he were around today, Myles would probably have mentioned this linguistic curiosity in Cruiskeen Lawn.

Mirrors do not reverse images, only the paper on which you've written has been reversed in order to view it in the mirror. Try writing on a piece of glass and then viewing it in a mirror. It's not reversed unless you turn the glass around.

what about the part where he's talking about the crack in the ceiling in the corner? A corner of a room is "reversed" to the other side. It's really a Bloch Sphere - so the reversal is noncommutative.
