On the afternoon of May 6, 2024, a slow moving High Precipitation storm moved into and exploded over Harrisonburg, VA and surrounding areas in Rockingham County. Originally just chasing the storm, we realized it wasn't moving fast at all, which led to the National Weather Service issuing a 'considerable' Flash Flood Warning. Over 2 inches fell between 6-730pm.
Several roads and homes were inundated with water, including ‪@jamesmadisonu‬ , The Arboretum, and Several creeks going out of their banks and into roads and property. We documented this post chase. A significant Flash Flood event was underway.
May 6, 2024 will be remembered by the people in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, VA for a long time to come!

A warmer climate will cause more moisture to be in the air. It also changes weather patterns - Along with natural occurring pattern changes, that can lead to more moisture to fall in areas that it used to not. As we've built slopped towns and towns or cities within water basins, we will see this more often.

Nice work documenting. Is flooding becoming more common in that area?

When it comes down, yes. Reason being, the beautiful Shenandoah valley is becoming more prone to climate extremes, like droughts, and when this happens the ground becomes rock hard - making heavy rainfall have no time to soak in - and running off the ground like concrete. We are in an extreme drought right now, and just had a tropical system move through leading to very similar conditions.

@@stormchasingandresearchsociety thanks for the reply. I'm in SE FL and researching possible places to relocate. Ironic that many places up the east coast are becoming as vulnerable as FL to a certain extent.

@@ronansuperpup ofcourse - thank YOU for the engagement. Places all over are experiencing worse weather. I would highly recommend our area, the Shenandoah Valley in VA or even eastern WV has relatively cheap property (compared to other places) and incredible things to enjoy - the mountains are unmatched. But sadly, we have been experiencing more droughts and even a few more tornadoes than usual as of late.

@@stormchasingandresearchsociety definitely haven't ruled it out. I got to go camping in Front Royal when I was a kid and was very impressed by the beauty. Looking at Harrisonburg atm. No immanent plans, but learning and watching for now. I appreciate your input.
