As someone that took two years of Japanese in uni/college it’s not the impossible language everyone makes it out to be . A little effort goes a long way my friend ;)

To be honest, German is the easiest language for anyone not least a Japanese to pronounce with reasonable precision except Umlaut and trill, thanks largely to the nearly total absence of spelling-pronunciation irregularities. which is another aspect of precision-orientated German culture excluding deviations from rules. You just follow spelling and you make no mispronunciation. In the mean time, however, I must admit that German grammar is a sheer nightmare.

Actually, they sing all in Japanese!　For example, Yorokobi in stead of Freude . That is vital for singers and listeners to feel deep from their heart.

As an American you should know that we embrace the classics as well. Or at least those of us that spend any time learning instruments do. Ode to joy isn’t enjoyed any more by one culture over the other , it’s celebrated the world over

As child was always just thought is just well known in my area as the componist was from my town. Was need a while realize that its not regional or german but a world thingy

hab mal ein Video von einem japanischen Chor aus 10000 Menschen gesehn. Da haben sie auch das Lied gesungen. Gänsehaut und Tränen in den Augen. Als ich dieses Jahr in japan war, hatte ich Probleme am FLughafen mit dem Immigrationsformular. nach dem 3. versuch, kam ein Flughafenmitarbeiter zu mir und hat mich in fließendem Deutsch angesprochen. Als ich mich umgedreht hatte stand ein Japaner um die 40 vor mir und hat mich angelächelt. Ich dachte ehrlich erst ohne hinzusehen, dass er deutscher sei.

The "whole" mall was not in on it - but there certainly were a whole of people who were. I assure you, the vast majority of Japanese do not know this piece, let along how to sing it, but for the sake of the video, they obviously focused on the part of the crowds that were closest in recording distance to the musicians.

I love this piece of music not becouse its European Union anthem, but becouse it is music which invigorates in our hearts our dream about united Europe, a dream which maybe lost forever and soon. Maybe the Union will become centralized totalitarian technocratic regime or maybe the Union will be gone - destroyed by egotistic maniacs and we become again a bunch of little quarrellsome particles. Well, considering that Symphony No. 9 is being played widely in Japan every New Year, it would be really obvious that many Japanese would know it by heart, wouldn't it?

Actually, I've sung that piece, just the chorale of the third movement and it wasn't complete at all. They left a lot out.

My very first musical love was Herr Beethoven.

I don't think "everybody" was singing. I assume those singing were choristers planted in the hall because I'm a lifelong classical music fan and I couldn't sing all the words in German. I doubt anything like that many "regular" Japanese could unless they were trained to do so.

Those singing in German from 6:23 to 7:49 are the members of the Musashino Chorus who are familiar with the German lyrics, whereas those joining the chorus (a dozen or two individuals) from 8:11 are the laymen=members of the public who happen to know the lyrics in Japanese only. Note that members of the Musashino Chorus changed language at this point apparently to encourage passers-by to participate in the choir; simply because this climax is the part of the symphony best known to anyone in the country. Personally I believe at least the first part of the lyrics by Schiller is worth memorising since the time I was deeply impressed by the performance of an actress reciting this in one scene of the film "Clockwork Orange (1971)" by Stanley Kubrick.
