i've seen all videos of this big professional Gavin Hoey and i got courage to try some new exercise; i'm 66, retired airforce officer, just diving into this amazing world of photography!
Little bit worried by how satisfying I find watching people shoot and edit. 'Ohhh yeeah, lower angle, beautiful, Mmm bring down those highlights, just a little more. Yeah that's it.'
+Gavin Hoey You are a great teacher. Thanks. I have always hated flash, but I am learning now that the cameras I always used were the issue. I now am borrowing a t5i and no clue what I'm doing. Learning how to film and photograph is very confusing. lol
Gavin Hoey is always amazing. That's not a pilot. That guy looks like a super hero! At 7 seconds in the pilot makes Gavin look 5 feet tall. Never the less, Gavin is still the best adorama has to offer.
Gavin, I watch a lot of photography videos and while many people share a lot of good information on lighting techniques and tricks I must say that the final photographs you include on your videos are consistently the best around. (Maybe other people just say, "Oh, well, it's just an example photo for my video." and do not put in the post-processing work that you do. But whatever it is, your final photographs are always inspiring and provide marks for viewers to shoot for.... no pun intended.) Thanks, as always, to you and Adorama for producing these videos.
Great video,Gavin. Love your short but informative style. However, I had to watch this video 17 times to get the gist, I was so distracted by Roger. OMG!! Can we have more Roger videos? Pretty please? :) Cheers
I realy enjoy ur videos and this one is no exception, I learnt alot from your home studio essenstial videos series. i have a request can u plz or sm1 at adorama make tutorial about 360° panorama virtual tour videos ? Thank You Sir and thanks Adorama :)
Just a quick one where can you get tools for repairing canon lenses in uk. They have got damp on the inside. Good foto shoot at gatwick never realised ther was a mueseum there to i remember bucaneers in the service paid of from hms bullwark 1981 the original one, not current one. Great aircraft.
I thought he was a boxer as well ;) Very nice comparison of ambient vs. flash. It seems like you can get great photos either way, but each has a different look and feel about them. The ambient look more like what you might find for a simple photojournalism style piece for the newspaper, whereas the flash look has more of an in-depth photo essay feel, like what you might find in a magazine.
on an overcast day, i almost always prefer flash over ambient - the lighting without flash is too flat and muted otherwise...of course, that might be fine if that's the mood you're going for :)
it is a pity that Gavin now only does shooting in studio with models. Back in the days he used to show us so many technique and creative shoots you can make at home
Thank you Gavin. Love your work. Also thanks for the links to the gear. I was just looking for a light stand that will automatically stand when put down.
Gavin, I love all of your videos. But this one - I love to watch again and again since 4 yrs. Honestly, I watch all of your videos, again and again, this one probably most often.
Gavin, this is SOOOO awesome! You have inspired me SOO much!! There is a photo group that I belong to and we are having a photo shoot at the Oakland (California) Aviation Museum this coming Sunday and this video as well as the other with the female (red head, I think? ) model an air museum that you did a video on was my TRUE inspiration to do some dramatic shots (if possible) while there. Ambient light and shots can be "nice", but, I want DRAMATIC and I want that "WOW!" factor, so, HSS and practice and props, etc. are what I'm shooting for. Thanks again for all that you do! The best to you, Huie
Couple of notes to help you out.. #1 - I don't like your method of having to change the aperture around to chase the exposure and give up dictating DOF.. wouldn't it be better to shoot at your desired aperture THEN adjust the shutter speed to do over, under the ambient?? you can do that with HSS.. #2 You didn't use/apply any custom color calibration profile.. so colors will be muted and not making use of the full dynamic range of your camera. #3 DEHAZE is a very dangerous tool when used more then a little as it quickly will overbake colors to the point they can not be corrected. You can see the effect of the Red forehead even after you tryed to compensate by bringing the vibrance way down..
Hey Adorama, thanks for the helpful photography tips. All of your teachers are helpful, but for me, I'm always delighted to see Gavin's videos. Great attitude, clear, concise information and always introducing me to a new project I want to attempt. Kudos, and please keep them coming.
Always a pleasure to see your videos Gavin! For me, aesthetically speaking: ambient light looks always more natural than those fake lights... Obviously!
Gavin, your tutorials are great. I've been utilizing many of your tips to my work and leaving many clients smiling...other than in their photos. :-) Thanks!
Great video..well explained as usual. I do have one question regarding the light stand that you used. I see that the legs folded up as you lifted it. This is something I have been looking for to help with mobility in sometimes confined floor spaces. Could you tell me what make it is and if possible where I can get my hands on one. Thanks
Nice. Love this tutorial. I learned the difference to use ambient light and flash. And more. Now I know the situations to use each kind of light. The ambient light refer to real situations, the flash light refer to fantasy, unreal situations. The flash light brought me an surrealism aesthetic. Something like a steampunk photo.
"One of the advantages to working with ambient is I don't have to move my lights around.." Thank you Adorama for these searing insights into the mysteries of lighting.
wooooowwwwwwwwww he uses a surface book thats the 1st time ive ever seen someone with as much skill as him not use a mac. I use a surface pro 4!! and I love it
