Flashing ESCs With an Arduino

Need to flash an ESC and don't have a flight controller handy? Don't have a USB linker handy? In this video I show you how to Flash ESCs with an Arduino. This is a fairly easy process and once you have done it it's easy to repeat quickly.

Thank you! I could not flash my ESC with the linker, I will try this.

You are most welcome. I find the linker is giving a lot of issues with drivers. There’s another issue where you might have to place a jumper on the SW pin if your flashing them installed. With the Arduino, you might need to install the IDE software for the included drivers but the process is much more seamless. Let me know how you make out, we’ll get those ESCs flashed one way or another.

Hi . I don't understand, I do step to step follow video, after bootloader successful, I change to Bootloader USB/COM, then connect power with ESC, then press Read Setup button. Have problem with me, in the screen always show PLEASE CONNECT ESC WITH POWER UP. Obviously I connected the Pin to ESC. I check pin value vintage is 12V, that nomarl. Can you help me. Thank you

it sounds like the com port is ether wrong or not seeing the Arduino on it. I’ve fixed this in the past by rebooting the pc.

@@breaksteel I checked, port correct. white wire connects with RX in arduino board, black wire connects with GND. Rebooting the PC? what do you mean? Thank you very much for your reply

The way I understand it, connecting via USB/Com port the Arduino works more like a pass through to the ESC then a direct communication with the Arduino. Com ports are funny in that if used for one device changing to another device the driver don’t work. I have this happen often when flashing a FC then trying to connect a Arduino or ESC. The computer just won’t recognize the new device. Rebooting is the only thing I’ve found that works and even then it’s not a guarantee. I’ve been looking for a solution to this for years and at this point think it simply doesn’t exist

For everybody, you may need to install the Arduino IDE software which includes drivers for the Arduino. I had these installed so I was unable to test this without the drivers installed. Let me know you make out. For you FPV guys, after you flash the firmware, do not install the INI files. These INI files are for the FDL-3 only.

when i try to flash my arduino uno using blheli it says me "cmnd stk not sync", but it's all connected as i saw in the video. Where could it be the issue?

There’s a few things that can be going on here. Make sure your using the proper COM port and selected the proper Arduino board. Yours will likely be different than mine. I’ve even had some instances where a reboot of the PC fixes this issue. Mostly this occurs when switching back and forth from flight controllers to Arduino. Another thing that may cause this is missing drivers, make sure you have the right ones installed. Finally it’s possible your Arduino is missing it’s boot loader. The boot loader issue is pretty unlikely though. Hope this helps!

After flashing the Arduino Uno I try to connect to the ESC but when connecting the power it cannot find the ESC and the bar of the search goes forward to the end and then backward without finding anything, what could be the problem? Thank you!

Make sure your powering the ESC main leads as your trying to communicate with it.

I’m not familiar with the Teensy but your supposed to be able to upload the same sketches you would on an Arduino. It uses the same IDE software. The pins used would likely be different as it’s not an Arduino. It’s also supposed to be much more powerful than an Arduino is.
