I've tried drop bars and i just dont get along with them well. I went back to flat bar. Picked up a sirrus x 4.0. Technically a hybrid, but fairly light weight and clears 45mm tires well enough. So, its my do it all gravel bike. Love the upbeat energy in the videos.

Hey, thinking about Sirrus X 4.0 too. They say officially the tire clearance is 42. Are 45s really a safe option to run on it? Thanks!
Год назад
Also, did you ever upgrade the crankset on the 4.0?
@Daniel Kvasnička depends on the terrain. The bigger the tire, the less clearance for mud and debris. But I think a 700x47 could be stuffed in there. It would be tight though.
@Daniel Kvasnička I did. I put a grx 1x crankset on it. Now I can change the chainrings easily.

@@jbandt thanks! did you have to change the whole BB or you just bougt a 24mm spindle crankset and it fit into the 68mm one that is there? could you share the exact type?
Drop bars only help at higher speeds due to the way air resistance ramps up exponentially with speed. At lower speeds drag from the tyre matters far more. Climbing is more about body weight and tyres. I do not care for high speeds on the flat - easier just to slow down 15%. Flat bars give more control descending off-road.
I love the way you light up when you see your daughter. I am looking forward doing a bike pack with my kiddos but they are still a little too young at 2 and 4.
I have a flat bar gravel bike... it's my old Peugeot mtb from 1990! Funny how the biking world always invents new trends that were the standard a few decades ago! My old bike has those supple skinny Reynolds steel tubes, flat bars, thumbies, 1.95inch tyres...everything your modern bike hack bangs on about right now. It's strong enough and has enough mounts for bike packing, it has canti mounts so I could spend a ton on some Paul Components purple anodised brakes. Plus, turns out thru axles aren't all that...you'll see. Two years from now we'll all be told how a 5mm QR skewer is the best. People just need to ride what they have and forget this new shiny crap the capitalists insist is better...until it isn't. Cycling should be about fun, fitness and being 'green'...not riding because of bike fashion is killing this off.
Enjoyed this, i did wonder from the tweet just now when i spotted the bike i thought, hang on zzip wheels, matching saddle and grips, someone has been tinkering methinks…thanks for the nod to this clip J’E. As for folk telling you what to use/ride/swap/edit film and generally how to live ones life i say to them “Do one and go life your own life thanks but no thanks…Next!”
Used to be called a Hybrid!! However it does complete the MTB..Gravel bike circle. I have Carbon Gravel bike set up 650x47... Carbon MTB set up 700x43 and although mostly ride my Road Bike love riding off road. Just depends on where you live and what riding you mostly do. Loads of back roads, forestry trails in Donegal so hence bike set ups.
I'm set on this bike. Actually, the DSX 1 version. Wanted a commuter bike for ride to work, tarmac. Don't like the idea of gravel bikes at all. But as a mountain biker a flat bar gravel bike suddenly makes a lot more sense to me. Sold! ;-)
Even more confused, I was broken in into during lock down and had my bikes stolen. At 63 not sure whether to buy a road, gravel or hybrid as the roads round my part of the Yorkshire Dales is petty dire to say the least, Great video keep them coming.
With all your 'unwanted' bike parts, Dave and yourself could quite feasibly build up a couple of bikes and auction them off for charity, 'livestream' style👌 As for the flat-bar Marin, no mudguards? Great vid😁
I don't like the brown. But please ignore the people who complained about you stood in front of the bike. I watch your videos to see and listen to you. Keep up the good work.
The flat bar headlands by Marine is just amusing with a touch of classy and I would guess more precise and direct when riding; yet it is your liveliness and energy that brightens up the video 🌞🌻 So you good where you already stand, there's no need to move away 😄🙂🖐 ahhh, those vile comments , just nasty and stupid 😑🤔
I am also riding on a size 21 29er Hardtail frame with 38T oval chainring and 11-42T cassette. I use a Loop bar because flat bars are booring for me 🤣 Mountain King CX 700X35C my god I can go fast and dive thru wet-slightly muddy terrains. And yes I did liked and subscribed as you requested. 😃
I got an old Carrerra crossfire and swapped out a few bits to basically the same sort of thing using old school style parts. Gravel bike before gravel bike if you get my drift.. dirt cheap.
Yeh modern mountain bikes are far removed from this now. This is a good bike that fills a niche for many people. Lots of us would use this who would never use a suspension bike
Not sure I dig the flat bar on a gravel bike idea. Although, a slight flare on drop bars aren't necessarily the pinnacle of gravel handlebars ether. Something that keeps road riding fun and fast but gives great handling (wider with good stopping power) on technical trails...
You in your own video, absolute madness, what were you thinking?🤔 🤣🤣🤣. Seriously love that bike, but can't get one for love nor money at the moment in the UK. I was told December 21at the earliest. 😢
I still have my first ever mountain bike, a Kona Hahanna from the early 90s (92/93ish) so a little bit after your 80s reference but ... I still ride it on special occasions. It's got new wheels and drive (single speed now) and saddle/grips/bearings etc but I love it's old school handling and rugged styling. I think there's room in my fleet for the old school MTB and a shiny new gravel bike even though I'm not sure which I'd use most!
Noice, looks a good frame for the money, all the heavy bits would eventually get replaced as they wear out. Be interested how much lighter all the high end bits make it.
I i’m thinking about getting a DSXone but I don’t know yet because I want to put 29 inch wheels in and it says on the marin website that you can fit a 2.1 tire
Love this. Got the same bike but sticking with the perfectly good stock bits as I’m not sponsored. Will probably put some ergon grips on soon. Looking forward to a video of you using this in bikepacking mode.
Nice bike and interesting video. I am deep into my 6th decade, so I need more upright swept back bars and upgraded my SCRAM 1x12 to GX. Marin makes some cool affordable bikes with decent components. Looking for you on te gravel with this set-up.
First of all totally loving your outfit! Those wrap tie jeans and top are awesome! And in keeping with the aesthetics, is it wrong to want a rainbow cassette just cos it looks so lovely?! I have a flat bar gravel bike (Sonder Camino) and only thing is I’m finding is that I could do with an extra gear for super steep hills. I’m a useless novice at bike tech so no idea whether can just change the cassette to do that or have to change whole gear set. Am relatively new to cycling (about 18 months) and have also just discovered the joy (and pain) of Zwift for icy days and to boost my training. Absolutely love your videos which I find completely inspiring and I also love that your completely natural and unaffected delivery style. Keep on keeping on, you are much appreciated:)
Almost 30years ago i had a full rigid steel mtb with... cantilever brakes i think it was about 20kg!!!!!! At least that was what i thought when i was a kid... lololol
Long, long time ago, around the early 90's (I was 15 yo), I removed the front suspension fork of my MTB, added a rigid fork, threw away my FD, sawed the small & big rings off my 3x crank (a sacrilege!), and changed to 1.50 less aggressive tires....many made fun of me those days because I murdered an MTB (which was cool to have those days) and converted it to a HYBRID...now my bike resurrected and they call it a flat bar GRAVEL BIKE ...🤣🤣🤣 marketing hype! Don't get me wrong, I still ride hybrid bikes (tagged as a gravel bike worth $$$$) because I love them...I somehow think, maybe I'm one of the first few people to ever conceive the idea of a 1x off road / road bike at the same time...
Love Marin had one years ago will get another one day soon. Not hating SRAM but no love for Shimano Juliet? Not sure if a flat bar gravel bike is a new thing though it was invented about 35 years ago in America.
Video idea - you mentioned that your training plan for the day was to do a 2 hour base ride - what would tgat look like outdoor versus indoor? My Garmin almost always tells me that I need to do more base training. But where I live is quite hilly (and during Covid I can only train locally), so i struggle to keep the power and my HR low. So how would you tackle a 2 hour base ride in a hilly area? And how would you set up an indoor alternative on Zwift?
Ah, well it’s hilly where I live too. The answer is, you just have to go ridiculously slowly on the hills - embarrassingly slow in fact! Of course sometimes the hills are so steep that it’s hard to get up that at a lower power but I take care to plot routes that avoid hills like that. On Zwift you just log on and keep an eye on your power
I had to laugh at your confusion per bicycle versus host footage. I think the critics want a shot like 1:30. I always like a nice shot of whatever bike you are riding and you are pretty good about giving a look albeit sometimes they ARE rather quick. Great vid hope you get out soon.
Fair Play Juliet the bike looks great to be fair 👍👍👍 Question 1 How much would it cost with the spec that you’ve made 2 Would Marin sell a bike where you don’t charge everything 😂 As your sponsor. If they talked to you, I’m sure they would sell more bikes Cool 😎 anyway we need a test ride now Juliet Cracking vlog 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hey, thanks for the awesome in detailed review! I'm 180cm was planning to buy the size L. Was planning to use dsx1 as commuter in urban potholed streets. 1. Is the ride quality comfortable on city roads for long duration? can ride position be changed from aggressive to a bit neutral? 2. read in a few reviews that the handling is twitchy, didn't understand though. 3. Also do your feet touch the tires while turning? Would apprecite your view on this, Thanks Sourav
I tested a dsx1 out but the stock 780mm bars and 80mm stem made it super twitchy compared to my gravel bikes bar setup. I'm assuming cutting bars down some + longer stem would address it.
@ Over all the bike is light n has a good built. 1. It's comfortable for long rides if you add bar ends to the stock flatbars and a comfy saddle. I tried to change to mtb riser bars to increase the height of the handle bars & get a comfy position but I missed the quick handling and agility of the stock setup so changed back. 2. I mostly ride 80/20 city/gravel so changed to 120mm stem & pushed the grips inside on the handle bar to reduce shoulder pain. the stock 80mm stem one is also good for more responsiveness. totally subjective. 3. the feet don't touch while turning It has a short reach, I always try to push myself behind on the saddle to make myself comfortable

@@kwala7 Thanks for the response, much appreciated! Did you go with size L in the end? I'm exactly between two sizes, would you recommend going for the larger one if I have similar priorities as yours?
Great vid and really neat upgrade! I'm actually waiting right now for my own DSX2 and thinking about upgrading the brakes. Unfortunately because of the Flat-Mount fork there aren't so many options. Which did you put on yours? (Are they really an improvement or just for the love of it?)
Hows the comfort with the straight bar set up? I'm guessing it wouldn't be as comfortable as road bars. Of course road bar give many more hand placement options
Lol only one hand grip on, thanks for sharing and being PR (positive and real) and I’m just curious how long a ride do you see your self doing on a flat bar gravel( aka old mtb) vs a drop bar gravel?
