Welcome to CoCoVid! In today’s video I will be sharing the basics of dart manipulation, added fullness, and walking you through creating the patterns for three different gathered yoke variations. This video is meant as an introduction to these techniques, and there are nearly infinite varieties of shapes and designs that you can make.
If you want to try these methods on a half scale front bodice sloper block I have provided one here that you can print out: drive.google.c...
To make it easier to navigate the exercises later; here are some important timestamps:

Please post more videos! The explanation about gathering math *chef’s kiss*. I’m teaching myself pattern drafting and sewing and you just made 2 concepts (yokes and gathers) seem like something attainable. Thank you!

Incredible! You explained it so clearly, I loved seeing the actual garment compared to the flat pattern. I’ve been wanting to make a yoked button down and had no idea where to start, thank you! Subscribed :)

I feel like that moment in The Matrix where Neo can suddenly see the code because I finally get the concept of slash and spread and it's like the whole universe is opening up to me.

It appears as if, in the case of a full length pattern piece ending at the knee, changing a round neck to scoop neck, a gathered neck would involve making those slashes all the way to the knee. Is that correct?

I've got some basic beginner questions on the first altered pattern where you moved the dart and pleats to the side that joins with the yolk. Assuming the new dart is still sewn, is there a tip for hiding that dart seam among the gathers? Before cutting the yolk from the base, should it be marked on the yolk where the dart seam should line up among the gathers? Or does the excess gathered fabric and evenness of spacing make enough fullness that knowing where the pattern lines up with the apex is unnecessary? While space for a dart is important in creating the pattern, can the actual stitching of the dart be made unnecessary due to fabric choice and the fullness created by the overall gathers?
@chibirinoa
@chibirinoa 4 года назад
Yes to the second two questions! That pattern has no darts anymore. The excess gathered fabric passing over the bust apex makes the dart unessesary. Since we transferred the dart space from the waist to the seam the space that the dart takes up is converted into the gathers.

This is so so great! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I just have one question, how do you know where to put the arm hole notch on the front and back? I’m so excited to make my own patterns from now on!
@chibirinoa
@chibirinoa 4 года назад
Thank you! I was taught to put the notches 3 inches up from the underarm seam. However, the notch can be moved up or down to adjust the part of the cap that is eased in when setting the seam.
