I had the same experience with the catalyst being a bit narrow and preferring a wider Q factor. I fixed it by adding some spacers called knee savers. No more standing on the edges.

I've seen those too! Was thinking of trying them! I have the nukeproof horizons on the bike atm but I will get some of those knee savers and see how they compare.

Work on leveling ur arms as u near obstructions and u should strike less.

I used the Catalyst pedals for a while paired with 510 Free Rider Pros. My feet have never hurt so much after riding :( I swapped out to RF Chesters. I’m switching to RF Atlas next.

You're spot on 🤘🏼 My favorite pedals are the Catalysts right now... And I do the alternating long pin hack too! 😂👍🏼 But I'm not a fan of the grub screws either... I'd love to see the raceface pins in the Catalysts... With a wider q factor... But even as they are, I love how it almost feels like carving down the mountain on skis... Great review dude 🤘🏼

Wow didn't expect to see you here Sheyn! Hopefully when they update the pedals they will come with the pins similar to the raceface and are a little wider. Mtb Telly has been messing around with different pins and found that the bottom loading raceface atlas pins fit into some top loading pedals (if there is clearance to thread them in from the bottom).

And thanks for checking put the vid! Glad you enjoyed it. If you ever come down under I can show you around!

@@trailtalkmtb6603 - ooOOooo... That would be cool. I know James says that he uses grub screws because otherwise the pedals would be heavier 🤷‍♂️😂 Great vid 🤘🏼 I poke around RU-vid every once in a while 😉

Hey Crashing Dad, try the knee savers with the catalyst pedals. Makes all the difference if you like a wider Q factor.

I have the Shimano and can’t believe that they are front loading pins! What a design flaw.... Have you tried the DMR Vault I’d be interested how these compare to the race face atlas?
@trailtalkmtb6603
@trailtalkmtb6603 5 лет назад
Vaults are definitely more grip but the shimano platform is more supportive. I feel like the deity tmacs are the best on the market atm but again, top loading pins.

The xt are awful, dmr v12 and vault are good, I'm using superstar components nano X pedals, but they are just a couple of miles away from me so it's really easy for me to just go to the factory and meet up with them. They also have screws that screw in from the back and are nice and light for a though magnesium pedal.

I have run Atlas Raceface for about 3 years and cant fault them because they have 3 10x6mm bears and one larger 24x15mm so no bushes and can be greased up easy and I change bearing every 4 months as I ride a lot, I have only broke one pin and there thin so strikes are less than other pedals. Mine look bashed up but they still work.

Great review. Thanks. I ride Deity Tmacs. They stick like glue and are nice and wide. Since learning of Catalyst I started pedaling midfoot on the Tmacs. With a US size 10 shoe snd the size of the Tmacs i can do so. The technique is great and has helped me tremendously. Was really considering buying the Catalysts but the width scare me. Might wait and see if they come out with a wider model.

Being narrow might be a deal breaker for me. I was just about sold on them, but I find I'm always crowding my crank arms trying to stay on the pedals. I love the longer idea and think that would be ideal for me, but that narrow width...... Been using HT composite pedals and they've taken a helluva beating. Wanting to step up to an all aluminum pedal.
@trailtalkmtb6603
@trailtalkmtb6603 5 лет назад
Yeah definitely a deal breaker for some. I was running 2 pedal washers to bring them outboard a little which helped. I'm swapping over to the nukeproof horizons for a while. I need to try the HT's! Have a few composite pedals I'll be testing soon so I'll see if I can get a hold of some.

@@trailtalkmtb6603 From what I've read they make pedals for others, such as Nukeproof. I've been happy beating on them for 2 years with zero maintenance.

Can a roadie use those pedals? The catalyst one seems very cool to be honest.

With the Catalyst pedals how did you adjust you bike for the new foot placement please? Seat down n forward? Did the reach change enough to require a different stem?
@trailtalkmtb6603
@trailtalkmtb6603 4 года назад
Hi Murray. I found that I just used my natural foot position as opposed to using the mid foot position they recommend, however if you are using the mid foot position I found I needed to slide my saddle forward a little to get a steeper effective seat angle and adjust my saddle height accordingly.

Pedals that wear after use are not using a sealed bearing.....rofl...... Yet he say's it's an innternal sealed bearing.... So which is it? Abec sealed bearing will last at least a couple of year's of abuse. Marketing hype....sealed but not dust/waterproof 🤣🤣🤣
