I appreciate all the advice you give. It has improved my chances of catching catfish. I recently went fishing next to the Keystone dam on a cool evening and caught a 18 pound flathead.
Another successful catfishing channel catches most of his flatheads on cut bait ! I fish mostly in reservoirs, so I will choose cut baits ! Thanks for the information, Dieter ! 👍
I definitely think cutbait is looked over for catfish anglers. I've caught my biggest and most catfish off of cutbait. Now, needless to say, I've caught big cats off of live bluegill, but cutbait seems to get the job done. Especially for me because I fish lakes a lot. But also, there's something about nice juicy, chunky, and bloody pieces of cutbait catfish love.
I caught a trophy sized one on Boone lake in NE Tennessee at the dam Bank fishing with a white bucktail fly with a black uncle Josh pork trailer one summer day about 4pm fishing for bass. True Story I thought I hooked a striper the way it ran. Heck it jumped about a foot out the lake but it was so far out I see what it was and when I got it closer to the bank it made a hard run while I was stepping down on the rocks to get at the water and it almost pulled in lake. Thank got for spider wire.
Can catch gizzard shad on rod and reel. A few years ago we had a massive population of them show up in the thames here in london ontario. Basically had to put a lure right in their face and annoy them with it but managed to catch a few massive ones. They were stacked up in little river inlets 5 or 6 fish high, it was nuts.
Susquehanna is loaded with flattys. We use fresh cut bait .Frozen bait is ok but they instantly hit fresh bait a lot better.Drop offs and deep rocky areas main areas here.PB is 45 pounds a think state records is around 66 pounds.
Normally I have the opposite mindset with flatheads. I have always thought they are more of predator species so I always use cut bait only where there is a current to make it seem live, and in calm waters alive bait. However I am from Wisconsin so fishing is probably very different.
