One of my cats can hear the pop-top come off a can of cat food when she's asleep on another floor of the house. Cat 2 comes running at the slightest crinkle of a treat bag. They know things.

My cats surprised me so much at the vet the other day - they used to be so angry with flattened ears and hissing but this time they were SO CHILLED! I did a lot of socialising work with them and they went from being afraid of people to voluntarily approaching them for attention ❤ there’s nothing quite like taking a rescue animal and changing it’s life

Amazing what are you doing with them?
@blanche.o
@blanche.o Год назад
@@pelusita2016 I calmly approached them as kittens and didn’t force contact. With time we built trust and they’d willingly jump onto the couch when I’m sitting there or onto my bed when I’m going to sleep. Once they were fully comfortable with me I slowly introduced them to other people like friends and family, but never restricted the cats in a space with them. They’d always have more than enough space to run away and hide if they so desired. Natural curiosity helps, as well as people who understand they need to be calm, gentle and not make fast movements when a cat approaches them. It took time and patience but now they will easily go up to a stranger for a scratch and rub themselves against their legs. I, however, remain the only person they want to cuddle with. One is little spoon and the other cuddles in the nook behind my bent knees ❤️
@blanche.o
@blanche.o Год назад
@@pelusita2016also no yelling or any form of visible anger when they did something undesirable, specifically destroying my curtains or couches. I just did the gentle no and redirected them to the scratching poles - yes I have multiple 😂. Cats can’t really be disciplined the same way as dogs. I grew up with dogs but always wanted a cat, so when I was old and independent enough to get one (well, two), I first did all my research and Jackson Galaxy’s videos really guided me and equipped me to be ready for the long journey I’ll be walking with my beautiful babies

My cat Rowan has never done hissing and flat ears, he just tries to hide. He'll try and disappear in my lap. I wish I could say I was making headway in helping him develop confidence but he is so fearful of anything outside the house. I take him out to explore the yard while harnessed and he does well, but all it takes is a neighbor walking by (even as far as 100+ yds) and he will retreat to the front door. He discovered Garter snakes this summer and now anything that resembles a snake he's afraid of. I'll never give up, but I feel like the challenge line is so near to his breaking point that it's very hard to get him to meet it. I need to be more diligent about socializing him though, we just don't have people over very often. Covid made it worse.
@blanche.o
@blanche.o Год назад
@@hopefulpellinore5490 awh Rowan sounds like an extremely anxious kitty. Does he have a favourite toy or blanket? Or does he like catnip or treats? Maybe try having a guest who comes over often hold the toy/blanket or give him the catnip/treats. Might help with positive association. It will take time though…patience is key. Sending love to Rowan ❤️

What I love about my cat is how easily I can read her. The tiniest flick of an ear, a blink that's a fraction of a millisecond off, and I can tell if she's not happy about a situation. I've told friends "stop petting her now, she's had enough" and they don't listen to me, then wonder why she suddenly swipes at them and I'm like "I did tell you!" I know when my cat has had enough pets and she wants to be left alone, I know when she's in a playful mood and wants her toys. If you pay enough attention, cats can tell you everything, it's just up to you to listen.

I've loved cats since I was a little kid and was always frustrated when they would swat at me for "absolutely no reason".. Then we got a cat ourselves and I became determined to learn his body language.. Now I work in a kindergarten and we have some cats coming over for pets and with the slightest of twitch of the tail, I tell the kids to pay attention to it and that this means the cat has had enough.. We've never had an incident with visiting cats at work and I'm pretty proud of that..

I got me a cat this past spring - a rescue. It took a few weeks for us to adjust to each other. I've had cats my entire life. It wasn't until I started watching your videos that I finally learned I'd been doing everything wrong. So I thank you so much for helping me to catify and give this kitty everything he deserves to thrive. I'm proud to say, he's a mojito cat. There was only one situation that stumped me. As we were adjusting to each other, he'd hiss at me. I took that cue to leave him be. I also noticed he never lowered his ears. He started to own the space. I was petting him when he hissed at me; my cue to leave him alone. Except, as I left he grabbed my shirt. I thought maybe he wanted to be petted more but he hissed at me again. I went to leave and he grabbed me once more. I was so confused I broke down and cried. That seemed to confuse him. I'm happy to say, we're best buds now. I still don't understand what happened. He is so sweet. And yes, he still grabs me when he wants my attention. At least he quit hissing at me lol
@hallaloth3112

It might have meant that he wanted you around him but he didn't want to be petted at that moment. I've noticed that sometimes my cat molly will get in my lap but will then look kinda annoyed when I pet her, so I've figured out that it's just cause she wants to sit in my lap but doesn't want me to pet her right then. Sometimes cats can get overstimulated when we pet them

If she doesn't respond at all including her ears I just figure its a noise that happens often and she became used to it while I had just noticed it. They have excellent hearing. Interesting. My cat makes what I call her "hunting face" which is the face she makes when she's about to attack something - usually a toy or the couch. She puts her ears back, but I don't think she's scared. I think she's just in "attack" mode. She will jump on her "prey," then claw and bite it until she's tired of it. Maybe she thinks it's real threat, but it doesn't seem like it. I think she just wants to keep her hunting skills up to date. I've seen her crouch down low, put her ears back, and fluff her tail when she sees another cat from the window. That seems different from the "hunting face."

Curious, was she was a stray? One of our ex-stray does that when he starts playing. I joke that he plays like a street cat fights. . .and we know he got into fights. He's however very clearly playing. . .he starts it. . .our other cat lays there staring at him with a single paw up to shove his nose away with a fully belly exposed, ears forward. I'm sure most people would think a fight is about to break out. . .but no. . .they're just playing and clearly enjoying their rough housing session.

Just think of cats as babies and toddlers. New parents have to learn what each new cry means and parents of toddlers have to learn when their toddler is fixing to attempt shenanigans. We have one cat with terrible anxiety, he was a lot of work, but he was so worth it. I wanted to pet him and give him a hug and kiss in the mornings. I had to work up to each one by proving I wouldn't hold him down and when he indicated that was enough I respected that. Now he will ask me for that attention, he doesn't run, he will show it because I follow the rules my husband in the other hand can only pet him when he fed him. Angus hates that he liked to be pet and scratched you can see the the conflict in his eyes, even with me. He also knows at least once a year he'd going to be out in the go bye- bye box to go to the vet. It was so traumatic for him he would hide for days, but this past visit, he came home and went about his business like nothing happened. His confidence had improved so much, but I still watch for the signs of stress in him. Our kitten has Cerebellar Hypoplasia and doesn't wall. He wears diapers and needs help with eating and drinking due to poor motorskills. He's so smart. He figured out how to communicate what he needs early on, it's so helpful. He's got a bit of a bobble head and he's "twitchy" so we had to learn so over again with him. He recently found a way to indicate he needed a new diaper. He will scratch at the floor or blanket. Before that, we had to notice his "potty" face to tell before we had a leaky diaper mess. It amazes me at how easy it is to communicate with animals if you just spend a bit of time with them. The feral cats at my in-laws are not to the point you can pet them or get too close, but they're comfortable. Occasionally they will get so comfortable we can pet 1 or 2. It's always the same ones, but I think it's because we pay attention to their body language and respect their personal space well enough were not threatening. Not that they aren't still keeping a constant watch. That's also thrilling. To earn the trust of an animal. Our stuff was terribly accused and thrown from a truck as puppy. She was so scared of every little movement. We were just hung ti foster her, but I've we gained her trust, we couldn't give her to. We felt that would be cruel. Bless her she's 11, had joint disease and some other age freaked issues, we know she's not going to be with us much longer, but she, like all if our fur kids, had brought so much joy just by being herself.

Of the cats I have had, I have noticed that the airplane ears can also indicate annoyance. If the cat continues to be annoyed, tail swishing slowly follows, until they are so annoyed they decide they're outta there. Also, ears forward (or swiveled to high airplane) with wide eyes seems to indicate play behavior, as they prepare to pounce on something. It was hilarious to see my awkward ginger as a kitten, trying to leap upon something from the top of Momma's or Daddy's hip, as he would spread eagle his whole body.

My husband had never had a cat of his own (and he's a dog person) so when we adopted our sweet girl Venus, I had to breakdown her body language to him. Thankfully she is such a chill cat, doesn't get angry easily, and doesn't get spooked easily so she is very patient with him learning. One of my favorite things is seeing him understand what her ears and tail say about how she's feeling. I feel like it's helped him bond so much more with her.

Hey man. Um I'm a bit unsure of myself here. raw emotions are not easily expressed for me.... But i saw your thing about missing a fallen friend and felt I had to say Thank You. Jack was a dude who joined me when he was a kitten and I was a stoner in the mid 90's and we had a wonderful time together... He as my BEST FRIEND and even now I MISS HIM. Yeah. Some catharsis here. You made me cry and understand just how much I miss him. Thanks man. :( My heart's a hard place, people I'll never understand, but to cats... My heart has open arms. Funny thing... all my life stray cats will come up to me and rub my ankles even on Oxford Street Sydney at 3am. Anyhow, thanks mate. You've given me a bit of peace in my buried grieving. And that's gotta mean something, yes? Peace my Brother.

My cat likes to sit or lay directly in the middle of the doorway of whatever room I'm in and do radar ears. He doesn't seem that agitated, though. I think he's protecting us? He is doing it right now.

My kitties have this ear position I call "backwards ears" where they're just chilling on the back of my couch looking out the window. I just love it when they do it, it's like they're really content.

Love it, yes my cat definitely doesn’t like the low flying aircraft from the RAF based 2mile away sometime they are so low and loud it hurts my ears so goodness knows how my little Daisy is feeling she literally runs hide under the darkest corner and makes herself small ear down. It must really be painful for her. 😢

Video request! Hi Jackson, my husband and I have two cats and a dog we love very much ❤️ I am currently pregnant and will have a baby early next year. I am curious to learn how we can properly introduce the baby to our cats and general things we should be aware of when it comes to baby and cats living together. 😊

For me the most impressive part of a cats body, a true symbol of the hunter that a cat is are their hind legs, not ears not whiskers, not the teeth, not the nails. It's like how perfectly they are made to observe, prey, to crawl to the prey. Their bending outwards, so that they still can be low and move, having a long surface to have the perfect balance, and enough to make a leap. I'm always so impressed by this when I see my cat hunt.

Cats are super cool and can do amazing things, but the best thing they do is sit on your lap and purr! One of the best things in life! I don’t think one can truly appreciate the wonder that are cats until you have the pleasure of living with one 🐈❤

Jackson, with all this talk of geeking out about kitty body parts, you might want to do a video highlighting the breeds of cat which have been selectively bred for genetic mutations that give these body parts an unique appearance (or lack of a body part altogether like the tailless Manx). You can even give a brief synopses on each of these breeds’ unique care requirements and even give a hot take on your thoughts about selectively breeding cats this way!

I used to have a Calico who enjoyed snoozing on the sofa...until the dog walked by wagging its tail and unintentionally dusting the top of her head. She'd do "airplane ears" and look around like "what the he** was that?!"

On a somewhat windy night after a rain, my cat was fully asleep then suddenly woke up and eyes and radar ears focused in the direction of the back yard. She quickly ran up to the backyard window to look outside. I turned on the flood lights and there was another cat, about 50 feet away walking on damp earth with wind in the trees. From that moment on I knew cats have the most remarkable hearing of any critter. Thank you for this wonderful video that every cat person needs to see.

Thanks for this video, sorry I'm late to the party though. Haven't been feeling good all day, better now. It's funny, cuz I'm actually in the middle of reading your book "Total Cat Mojo". Really enjoying it, it's really helping me out with one of my cats. She's a weird one and sometimes I can't understand why she's acting a way she is until I read a little more of the book.

Hi Jackson, we've adopted a rescue three weeks ago today and wanted to say thank you for all your content. We've been watching plenty of your videos preparing ourselves and our flat for the cat, and rewatching some of your videos on how to read your cat's behaviour and respond to it appropriately was so reassuring, especially in the first week. Thank you!

Left out some of my favorite ears! Both are blissful: The Alllllll the way up super-up, top-of the head ears, (usually accompanied by cheek-smiling,) and the shmoosh-baby ears, (all the way down but blissful, often seen when being groomed by another cat, or by their cat-mom, or their actual mom.) Both super-up and shmoosh-baby ears are often accompanied by intensive biscuit-making.

Context is key. I think it really depends on history. Jace is our older lad (about three now) who was an ex-stray that we know got into fights. He had scabs when we met him and we later learned the FIV to prove it (poor baby was intact, and he was clearly the aggressor. . .many of the marks on the front of his body). And he clearly plays like he used to fight. He'll go all ears back, lashing tail, crouched and circling. . . towards Ajani. . .whose laying sprawled on the floor, hazily watching him, occasionally shoving his nose away with a paw no sign of stress at all. I'll admit I was concerned at first. . . now. . .this is how they play. Never any fur flying, no one desperate to get away (sometimes it devolves to chase playing) no screaming other than an occasional mumbly growl. Jace clearly 'states' those play sessions too. Jace also spits when he gets super hyper and excited during zoomies. Took me by surprised the first few times. He's just a different sort of cat. Tail is always down but otherwise no signs of stress. Loafs a lot with paws up under him ready to move. We're not sure how long he was out without a home, long enough to not know how to play and take months before he really settled and felt safe enough to play and zoom. He cuddles on his terms. He also screams bloody murder when Ajani jmps up into the kitchen chair with him to try and groom and cuddle. And then goes looking for the younger brat when he goes to baby jail for not leaving him alone. Someone please explain why my cat breaks conventional cat norms.

For my cat, the pointing forward ears combined with very large pupils means that a pounce on a toy is imminent. Her pupils are usually small slits while focusing on the toy but once she's ready to pounce she wiggles her butt, her eyes widen, and she jumps. Such fun observing her body language!!
@Matthew.Morycinski
@Matthew.Morycinski 11 месяцев назад
Pupil size is the same as F-stop in a camera. Small pupil=deep field, sees background. Large pupil=focusing at one distance only, in fact she measures distance to toy. Background is fuzzy so it doesn't distract.

We adopted William as an adult cat from a shelter and this video helped us to understand a bit of his history (the shelter didn’t know). He goes airplane (or Yoda ears) at any human outside but has no issues with dogs. It’s taken a long time but he’s now on my legs sleeping upside down with tummy out. He’s still terrified of visitors though so progress ongoing.

I love that I can apply everything in these videos to most cats, except my orange/white girl Dibella. She is always in airplane mode, standing there in the same room with us, squeaking disapprovingly at us if not just otherwise staring like we’re in the process of disappointing her. Or if we’re trying to get her attention for something important, then they don’t even twitch in our direction no matter how many sounds we make. My mom was concerned that Dibella may be deaf… except she can hear a singular food kibble drop into her bowl from the other side of the house, and thus she need us to stand there and give an unspecified yet somehow extremely certain amount of butt pats before she can partake in any kind of food eating. Or when she thinks the other cat is getting a delicious tuna snacky tube thing. She can hear those being opened from the other side of the planet.
