QUEEN! I was there...1981...believe me, the place was going crazy!! Never tire of re-living this fantastic concert! The entire band was on on point. The backup vocals by Roger - hitting those high notes - and Brian, too - are pure harmony! With rare exceptions, QUEEN is meant to be heard LIVE. The band always adds something different and very special to their concerts...their energy is amazing. Thanks for your great reaction! Hope you get a chance to see "Who Wants to Live Forever" LIVE in Budapest, 1986. I think you would enjoy it.

The emotions that cross your face as you progress thru the song are priceless. Half way you picked up a bottle to take a drink and put it down again (I imagine you subconsciously realized it would distract you from what you were experiencing.) Those feelings are what we feel each time we listen too. This performance never gets old no matter how many times I listen/watch. Mind blowing performance by Queen. 🤯

Actually, it was totally, IN CONTROL! Those guys rehearsed to within an inch of their lives. They employed glances, hand gestures, nods, facial expressions to project what would happen next. They each knew every nuance, every subtle gesture. Every live performance you see is ALWAYS perfection. Queen was always in sync. And, that drummer, Roger Taylor, could vocally hit notes that Freddie called his dog whistle. Implying that some notes were so high they could only be heard by dogs. All while shredding his kit.

Somebody To Love was the nearest Freddie ever came to the sound of the soul music that he so adored. He later commented that his preoccupation with Aretha Franklin might have grated on his bandmates, but he was undeterred. Freddie himself was even more proud of Somebody To Love than Bohemian Rhapsody. 👊 Boom!

To me, this is Queen at their very best. I love their Live Aid concert (who doesn't), but their Montreal concert cannot be beat, IMO. You can watch the entire concert on RU-vid, I have a personal soft spot for their rendition of Under Pressure in this concert (sadly no David Bowie, but it still kicks ass).

A couple little things about this performance: Something went wrong with Brian's guitar. When Freddie swivels on the piano bench toward Brian, you hear only 1 note. Then, just before the camera cuts away, you see Brian unplug. Roger starts drumming & Freddie starts toward the front of the stage but he's turned & watching Brian go backstage to the guitar technician. Freddie works the audience & Brian is back very quickly. You see Freddie turn to see him coming back. They're such pros, it's nearly seamless. 2nd thing is that Freddie is said to have been put off that the audience wasn't as responsive as Queen audiences usually were. He seemed to have to work a lot more than usual to get them into the chant. Apparently they had been told by security to stay seated during the concert so that's what all those polite Canadians were doing!

Best live performance ever……….. infact the Montreal whole concert is one of their best ever imo. Then again, they are the best live group ever….not that I’m biased much you understand. Queen is unique, all four band members wrote songs and together produced music that is timeless. Still gaining fans with each new generation that discover them. Freddie Mercury was brilliant both as a performer and songwriter. He controlled a crowd so completely that they became part of the performance. I love the original songs, but live, they became something much, much more. RIP Freddie, you was/are still the best!🥰😊

Freddie was definitely a performance artist. I read somewhere he wouldn't have his teeth fixed/altered bc he feared it would change the sound of his singing voice. He had incredible talent, enough to make duets with a couple of opera artists. Those duets are on Utube as well. RIH Mr. Mercury. Great reactions Sal. 👍🏼🙂

When I think of great concert bands, there are two that hold the very peak in two different categories. You are right, no one adlibs with such tight perfection as Queen and Freddy Mercury. Freddy was undoubtedly the most charismatic front man of all time, and the band was a collection of musical geniuses coordinating perfectly with him. And yes, Roger Taylor was the crown jewel of backup singers. The only other band for which I would kill to be able to go back in time and see live is entirely different: Pink Floyd. They were the very best at the huge stage production category, and their light and sound shows were a transcendental experience. Check out "Comfortably Numb" Pulse Concert 1994 if you haven't already done so. Your reviews ROCK, and I always enjoy seeing you discover some of my very favorite music.

There's a track I thought about the other day that I needed to mention. It's called "Hocus Pocus" by Focus. But has to be the live audio version where the band is introduced by Gladys Knight (w/o tht Pips) I believe it's from 1973. I think it's ahead of it's time with some Prog Rock. Without a spoiler .. expect the unexpected 😉 I don't believe there's ever been another track even close to this one. Hope u can react to this one soon Salvo. B safe & well .. Peace Out 🙂☮️

My personal opinion is: If you have not heard this song/this version or "White Queen" A Night At The Odeon (the version you covered) you have not truly heard Queen. Sure. They have some great studio versions of songs where the video is fun and you want to see it.....but 90% of their stuff is better live. And yes. Total shout out to Rodger for the back up for this song! (WHILE playing drums!) When you have a band with 3 guys who could easily front their own bands and put them together....think about it? What other band can claim that? (maybe only the Beatles???)
