Fldigi is a suite of programs for Amateur Radio operators who want to send digital messages. This tutorial emphasizes the use of Fldigi with FM VHF/UHF transceivers for local communications during a disaster or emergency.
Can't tell you how awesome this program is. As a person who has done a few... I know how much work you put into it. Simply outstanding! Congrats!! It's gonna fill a real world training need!!!
Great tutorial. Slow pace means that I can follow along with my laptop. Very clear instructions. Material dated...some dialogues are not the same, but close enough (July, 2017). I appreciate the time and effort to produce a well-ordered 33 minute video tutorial.
Wow. I've had a Signalink sitting around for ages... your tutorial has prompted me to hook it up and get busy. Excellent breakdown of modes and use's. Thank you.. K2LOG, Ron
Holy smokes Batman. All those options, modes, etc. I wouldn't know where to begin. I should have started when I was younger. lol Figuring out what mode to use on what frequency, when and all. Sounds fun. Guess a LOT more reading.
Thanks for the video. Like to get more details of the rig setup, what frequencies to use, rig control etc. What else beyond emcomm can digimodes on VHF/UHF is possible (PSK etc)?
Anybody out there ever had the need to use this system of communication for a prolonged period in an actual disaster? Is so, what were the circumstances and how did it work for you?
I am reading "This tutorial emphasizes the use of Fldigi with FM VHF/UHF transceivers for local communications during a disaster or emergency." in the description of this video and wondering, 29 minutes into this 33 minute video, when and if anything remotely related to FM VHF/UHF digital communications will be mentioned. Perhaps the description was copied from somewhere else by accident?
Nicely done. That said, the crude apps and slow transmission rates are modes and a workflow that only a retiree could enjoy. (Since they have nothing but time). Ham EmComm types love to fantasize about the Internet being out and how they will have something useful to do with their elementary (largely text based) digital methodology. FLDigi and the suite of apps ( a marginal kludge in my opinion) might be useful to some one some where. But I'll pass. The overview was clean and informative. mike/wa4d "Flex Head" 6300
Mike, cellular and internet outages a fantasy? I'd suggest you look into what happens during extended commercial power outages and the maximum capacity of the average cell tower. As for the "elementary (largely text based) digital methodology", I just sent a 5k CSV spreadsheet on 40m to a fellow on the other side of my state in 2 minutes with NBEMS FLDIGI FLAMP on mode 5xPSK63R. I might suggest you give NBEMS a try. You might be pleasantly surprised at what can be done with little or no monetary investment in complex gear.
You've obviously never found yourself in a crisis situation. Congratulations. Lucky you. But the so-called fantasy situations you are mocking...they DO happen. I've lived through it.
Jeff Jones I used sound card digital modes in Katrina on VHF and I wish we would have had it when we had to deal with voice comms during Hurricane Ivan (prior to our use of NBEMS). And, btw, during both of those events, cell phone communications were non-existent (in Katrina) and spotty at best during Ivan. Nice attitude, btw.
