It makes so much sense that they were amazing friends. When Flea is talking about how he can't read music but he puts his whole soul out there, it instantly makes me think of the way River acted. Totally self taught but just had 'IT', the way Flea is a brilliant musician. Two incredibly talented people. Also, remember when famous people were famous because they were talented, and had something to offer the world?
Fucking love Flea! 43:09 When Rivrr starts calling out random things and feelings for Flea to play, this gets amazing. Holy shit that was awesome. I really loved "Manic Woman... Tripping on the Umbrella", and "Clara Goes to See the Ducks at the Pond"
@Gabriel M. Chávez Thank You! 🤗 I don't understand why there are so many comments on RU-vid that put him down. I think he's great! Very talented and has a slightly distinctive character about him. (Some people don't like uniqueness, I guess...) 😔
True tho, if you are up high in an office they give you company car, free parking etc but if you are poor you have to pay for everything how's the even work? Lol
It’s basically the theme of “The Million Pound Bank Note” by Mark Twain. A broke guy is given a legit 1m bill of legal tender and everywhere he tries to spend it people give him the royal treatment just for having it, including comping his intended expenses. It makes more sense with musicians obviously; a famous bass player can be a walking billboard for a bass or amp company.
I loved River and Flea's friendship/brotherhood. They clicked so well together. Even though Flea is like 7/8 years older, River was always the teacher. I also think they clicked so well cause of, obviously how River was a s a person, but also cause their desires were pretty similar. Flea wanted to be a well-known actor, but instead he's a well-known musician and River wanted to be a well-known musician, instead he was a well-known actor. So they just sorta, clicked. Much love to both of them🕊️❤️
Flea is so next level. I didn’t even realize how spiritual he was until I saw this. Love that dude. It’s sad River is clearly not at his best during this video. But Flea just seems happy to have his buddy there. Please don’t judge him off of this. Please see his earlier interviews. Peace.
Whether they were on drugs or not doesn’t matter. There is a lot of value in this whole interview. The spiritual and emotional connection these two have with each other and the art of expression is outstanding. I hope everyone takes something from this or at least considers how lucky we are to believe on this very day and while tomorrow is never promised what we leave behind can be more than physical possessions but the power of influence.
@@prettydigitaljournal that person is just a troll. she posts on every river video saying crazy messed up stuff. she makes up lies about river, i wouldn’t bother even talking to her 😒
River: I have a question, here's a good question. Do you write, for instance that " get up and jump"... do you write that slow and then speed it up? Flea: No.
I've always loved this video. Always watched clips to learn little Flea bits well before RU-vid was a thing and you'd see little snippits. Unfortunate about Rivers, but these two had a genuine connection.
18:23 too 🤣 Absolutely brilliant ain't he, cracks me up laughing when he starts really getting into the groove and starts stomping around the place totally in his own element, like a Flea-Rex 🦖 🤣 🎸
Oh my gosh dude. These 2 dudes, Chad and Flea, so much chemistry it's insane. Love this video. This video is my biggest musical inspiration of my LIFE. My dad gave me this video along with my first bass guitar when I was 13 years old. Changed my life. I've prolly watched it 300 times AT LEAST. It affirms my style as a musician. I've always been an improve artist. Freestyle rapping and on the spot jamming. Straight impulsive creative music making has always been my primary playstyle. And alot of it, thanks to this video, is the reason why I came to know its okay for me to feel free to jam with total no hold bars freedom and creativity. Thank you Flea and Chad and River for this video
I'm here again hanging out with one of my all-time favourite influences Sir Michael of Flea-Balzary and the Late Great River Phoenix, not the first time I've watched this but as with anything relating to real creative (&always genuine!) musicianship and artistry from the soul I take interest.
Although I'm not a chilli peppers fan..I really admire fleas knowledge and respect he has for his musical forefathers. I think that is going away. And river was a fantastic interviewer
No River Phoenix was not on drugs. He was tired. At the time Phoenix was filming this video in 1992, he was also working on the film The Thing Called Love (released 1993) He had a little free time during the filming to help his friend Flea make this video. River is wearing the same shirt he wore in the film.
Maybe he was high, but this is him definately not high: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bWZ4E4zy2SE.html he was a weird dude. Its sad that 'addict' is all people remember. Everyone was fucked up at this time, he just died from it while others didnt.
Went to see the chilli’s in 2010 in London best gig ever ! I couldn’t help but think of River watching flea, River was in such Orr of flea he loved the chilli’s you could hear their influence in Rivers music they’d of worked together at one point the chilli’s had so many epic tracks yet to come
I Love River so much Forever be Loved and Missed💙 Always my inspiration in so many ways. His THE BEST!!! River with his James Wright Character here is always my fave💙💖💙
Just go this 4 years later. But the funk never gets old. I am a bassist for life and what flea says in this lesson is so timeless. “BE TRUE TO THE FUNK” I’m so glad you said that flea. You have to give all yourself to the funk, I’m 47 years into my funk journey, and I can say from my own experience as a true funkster that as you grow walking the lane of the funk it becomes more of a state of mind eventually. In the end you are one with the funk. Be the funk. Goodnite
Man, oh man, I love love River, but he is quite obviously out of it here. Maybe he just smoked too much weed, maybe he's there after filming for 15 hours, maybe its valium...who knows? But, he is clearly not all there.
@Lisa Surlie no you're the reason you started doing drugs. You. You put them in your body. You're insane. I see you on every video that has anything to do with River making the same rude comments. Take responsibility for yourself.
I´m one of those... Just remembered this vid convinced me to get into funk by the age of 18... 10 years later I thank the funky ass fleabass for changing my life... Great love for him!!
Me man Not only the Bass, though it was my very first instrument. This video propelled and inspired me to be a musician on so many different levels with so many different instruments and styles. My dad bought me this video and a bass guitar for my birthday when I was 13 years old back around the year 2000. Changed my whole life. Prolly watched it 500 times since
I always thought Flea was one of those popular musicians overrated by fanboys until I saw this and seen his incredible speed and technique, he's definitely a genius bass player
the fact that most of the people here on the comments is talking about whether River was on drugs or not, was tired or whatever. I tried to see what, I think, is the main purpose of the video, and that's to enjoy Flea talking with such passion and love about what he does, sharing it with his dear friend, River, and with all of us. Yeah some of the questions might be off topic or maybe not THAT interesting but c'mon just enjoy ❤️
River was playing the macho James Wright at the time in "The Thing Called Love" but if you watch that movie and compare it to the real person, you can see how different they are.
48:42 singapatient or syncopation? Either way Flea is one of the best musicians that has ever floated around the world and up someone's nose... Ever. The intensity of his energy is unrivaled. Flea is all smash- no flash! haha "Be true to yourself and don't be lame."
