Thank You Leslie! i never learned it on guitar but always wanted to, then i heard somewhere that Lindsey also played banjo which i think is evident in his finger picking style
@@rawbeets Correct, he uses the travis picking technique and is incredible at it. His hands look like they are moving in slow motion when he plays this song, its incredible
Lindsey Buckingham was heard to say on a PBS special that he learned to play guitar listening to Kingston Trio records, so he undoubtedly picked up some banjo technique from Dave Guard and John Stewart.
yessir! Lindsey is a musical hero of mine and i plan to re-do this song soon now that i can do it a little more justice. Here's another tidbit: "That melting pot of fingerstyle influences led to Buckingham's unique way with his right hand; more of a percussive hammer than picking, according to Lamendola. “I was playing banjo too by that point,” says the guitarist. “It was just part of my style." Thanks for watching!
Really nice! That’s such a noodly song, I think it mus be a pleasure to play it on any instrument one can figure it out on; it’s also a great pleasure to listen to you play it!
In the mid 70s, John Stewart, formerly the banjo player in the Kingston Trio commented to Nick Reynolds also formerly of the Kingston Trio, that Lindsey Buckingham was playing banjo licks in his guitar. You just proved that correct. BTW, Lindsey Buckingham later disclosed that he learned how to play guitar listening to Kingston Trio records and listening to John Stewart’s licks on them.
My wife bought me some ClawJam picks for Christmas. They're my favorites now on banjo when switching from down stroking to two-finger in the same song. I've also found that they work great on guitar switching from fingerpicking to Carter style.
Thanks Cibian! i have a song called "Mama Llama"....i haven't made a video for it yet, but you can listen if you wish: open.spotify.com/track/7t2cIa0aoLTD7QajkLcDFa?si=3dd5ae0cd79f4468
Wow backatcha Eric. I am in the hills right now with a terrible Internet connection but I can’t wait to get back to a good connection to watch more of your videos. Very nicely done. You have a new subscriber.
Thanks! I am using the Stainless Steel ones for this I believe. I make them in various metals....would love to do them in plastics but haven't figured out how to do that yet.
I'll bet a lot of Buckingham's stuff translates really well to banjo - considering his finger picking style. Awesome! I'm just picking up the guitar again after not playing for almost 20 years. I'll be a happy man when I get my calluses back and actually be able to play something like this. The riff from "Message in a Bottle" is another mountain I have to climb. Can we see that one?
Thanks Brikrantz1 . i discovered Lindsey also plays banjo, so it makes perfect sense! i used to play message in a bottle on guitar....i'll try and give it a shot on banjo sometime.
Of course the Eagles started as a bluegrass/hybrid thing, some nice 5-string picking on their early stuff (Take it Easy, for one). Yes, the clawhammer (old school) to finger picking style is a nice contrast. Another rocker that don't do to bad on banjo is Pete Townsend, yes the Who could throw down some down home country hooten-annie stuff!
So are you strumming with your ring finger during the strumming parts? Do you have a pick on your strumming finger or no? Im really impressed trying to figure out how you incorporate strumming into 3 finger style. It almost seems like youre switching back and forth between clawhammer and 3 finger and im wondering how you're wearing picks to be able to do that
hi Arven. i make my own dual bladed picks to accommodate picking in both directions....you can check them out at ClawJam.com ....but i'm taking a little break from making them.....there are other examples on my RU-vid channel
HI Rob absolutely brilliant...thank you. I am desparately trying to learn this from what you have shown here but I'm failing. Can I ask if you haver the tab printed?
hi jacalakie, thanks for that! sorry for the slow response. hard to believe i made this video almost 5 years ago....i should probably do a re-do since i think i can play and sing it a little better now. i don't write tab, but actually someone from BHO tabbed this out and i'd be happy to send it to you if you'll send me your email address to robb@clawjam.com also please check out my new cd at rawbeetsmusic.com .... this is the best i can demonstrate the way i play and i plan to release more videos soon!
thanks Trisha! it is open G but i am capoed at the second fret and 5th string is spiked at the 7th....i am going to do a re-do of this song soon, as i can play and sing it a little better now
That is an Elite Amber head....you can get them at Stew Mac. The resonator I bought on ebay. It seems to be fairly old and is held on by one screw to a mount that is attached to the dowel stick. A lot of tenor banjos use that type of resonator I believe. So I guess technically it's a screw off.....not a pop off. Hope that helps!
Hello....a friend tabbed this out for me....i'm not sure it's completely correct but it seems pretty close (i'm not much at tab) Send your email addy to robb@clawjam.com and i'll send it to you. And subscribes and likes are always appreciated! Thanks!
Thanks Eric! i'm working on a better version of this one, but Rhiannon would probably sound cool on a 5-string. Maybe i'll get around to that one at some point.
@@rawbeets Sounds good! From Lindsey's solo catalog, I'd recommend, "Rock Away Blind", "Love is Here to Stay", or "Down on Rodeo". Any of those would sound good on banjo.
Thanks Brad. i still haven't attempted tabbing anything out....maybe I'll get around to it at some point. RU-vid lets you slow down the video/ audio without changing the pitch, (under the settings control) that helps me when I'm learning stuff.
Hey Meghan....thanks for that! hard to believe i made this video almost 5 years ago....i should probably do a re-do since i think i can play and sing it a little better now. i don't write tab, but actually someone from BHO tabbed this out and i'd be happy to send it to you if you'll send me your email address to robb@clawjam.com also please check out my new cd at rawbeetsmusic.com .... this is the best i can demonstrate the way i play and i plan to release more videos soon!
Thanks! Standard A.....capo at 2nd fret and 5th string spiked at 7th fret. i'm going to do a re-do of this song and offer TAB and a backing track.....so please subscribe if you wish to see more like this.....Thanks again!
Thanks Natalie! this banjo is a Bart Reiter Galax open back, but i bought a cheap resonator on eBay that fit it perfectly so that is attached to it in this video.
Thanks Shubbs. You know you can slow it down from the settings menu in the bottom right of the screen, That has helped me learn a lot of songs on youtube.
Is there any way that you could post tabs or maybe a slowed down version of this??! This is by far the best banjo arrangement for this song that I have found and it's been on my list of songs to learn for a while now.
Hey Sarah. Thanks for the kind words! I'm still fairly new to banjo and can hardly read tab, and I'm afraid trying to tab this out as a first attempt may well take me the better part of forever....although I would like to try writing tab at some point. I'd be happy to do a slowed down demo for you though. Do you have have any vids where I can see your playing level to help me out as far as where to start?
RawBeets first of all, thank you so much for replying! I do not have any videos of myself playing, although I can tell you that I'm not good at clawhammer. So anything that I try to learn that is supposed to be clawhammer, I just kind of find a picking pattern that works for it. I've been playing for a few years, but I'd still consider myself a beginner in the sense that I can't just pick something up by listening to it. If I at least knew the base chords I might be able to figure something out similar. A slowed down video of the finger positions would be incredibly helpful! Also, is this in standard tuning? I tried to translate from a guitar tutorial, and I believe they said it was played in drop D. Thanks again! I would never be able to guess that you were new to banjo!
Sarah. My apologies for not getting to the video yet....been a crazy summer. Do you still want me to post the chords how I play them or have you figured it out?
there is a certain amount of suffering pain that you could never reach playing such a song, compared to Lindsey Buckingham's version. keep it up all the same.
yeah, no doubt andrew c. it is the amazing Lindsay Buckingham's song, not mine. i'm not really trying to re-create any pain or suffering he may have been feeling when he performed it. i'm just a dude trying to learn the banjo...and i thought i'd share with folks how this great song can be adapted for banjo. have a good one.
