Fleischer Superman Warner 2023 Blu-ray: 66 Picture and Sound Errors

Here are 66 errors I discovered in the new 2023 Warner studio label release of the legendary Fleischer Superman cartoons. These mostly stem from the 2006 DVD master that created them but the Blu-ray master has recreated all of the errors and further messed with the audio in terms of added noise reduction and redoing the tracks to try and smooth over some of the errors but frequently just carrying them over. They have also managed to somehow create NEW errors exclusive to this Blu=-ray release. This took people time and money to do when all they had to do was to scan the audio sources along with the new 4K image scan and properly restore these cartoons. They didn't. This is an appalling release that should be recalled for the massive number of new and existing errors, DNR application, poor color timing with revisionist choices, pitiful audio quality and hideous compression. I have included a few other notes of general tweaks and differences along with comparisons for each of the 66 errors with correct versions from the Bosko Video DVD of direct 35mm print scans plus a few comparisons also with the Image DVD and the 2009 Warner standalone DVD. I think I did more work in making this video and my video review than Warner did in bringing these legendary works to such an incredibly poor Blu-ray presentation.

This video does a great job at illustrating the issues that plague this Blu-ray! (including how worse it is when compared to the older Warner DVD release!) It needs to shared and spread as far as possible!

For me the killer is the noise reduction. There is no excuse for a company to use DNR in 2023. You've got to be kidding me, that looks awful. What were they thinking? Why on earth didn't Warner Archive handle this? There is no excuse! Warner stop with the DNR! Leave the grain alone!

A great overview of the issues with the Blu-Ray. I was surprised by some of them. Aside from all the music errors, I think that the most jarring error was mad scientist not being said correctly.

The new color grade is so bad that it hurts the eyes. All the grittiness and the 40's feel of the original master is gone with this awful new revisionism.

Baffling in every sense of the word. Truly boggles the mind how several people oversaw this, decided it was good enough for public release, and then got paid for that job. If I ever turned in work like this at my job, my competence would be called into question.

Remember when you could buy a disc from WB and the worst thing about it was just the packaging; shameful what is allowed to be sold. Guess we’ll have to wait and see when this tragedy is rectified

Warner was always art being generic, having generic encodes and usually remixed audio only but now you never can tell what the studio label will turn out.

Yep. The DNR was awful to begin with. The scrubbing of the audio lost detail like DNR removes grain but people didn’t notice. The errors everywhere that both recreated the dvd errors AND created new ones, the flattened looking image, the color timing changes and most of all the HIDEOUS compression that is only most apparent when you’re watching the disc itself in motion especially magnified up upscaling on a 4K television. I figured the dvd errors wouldn’t be fixed but I never expected all of this and for there to be new errors plus making some of the DVD ones worse!!

Great overview of the errors / issues listed. I passed on this set sadly will stick with the cartoons released in the Superman Motion Picture Anthology Blu-Ray Set from 2011 at least those look better. It's sad because Warner Bros. Home Entertainment / Warner Archive has put out great restorations and releases on Blu-Ray Disc and 4K UHD Blu-Ray over the years of their black and white films but their major catalog films , tv shows and recent animated titles not so much their is always errors on them for one reason or another just look at the recent 4K Box Sets of the Rocky and Superman films as a example of shotty QC Quality Control work.

Apologies if you've talked about this before. But are the versions that come with the superman anthology blu ray set the best HD version of the fleischer cartoons or should I get the bosko dvd?

That’s fine. It’s a confusing topic anyway so I don’t mind repeating myself. Basically the versions on the film sets are the warner DVD master which has most of these errors, but has far superior quality over the Blu-ray for not being messed around with in terms of the picture. However they are rather compressed to fit as extras so if you get the 2009 standalone DVD of them the compression is a bit better. However, you need the Bosko version to have the print transfers without the Warner errors. I usually recommend people have a version of both on the shelf to cover the bases. The Warner scans and their sources are far better than the Bosko and all the others but the trade-off is all the errors and not having Accurate mastering.

Thanks for doing this, I might still get this set just to have the classics available any time I would like, but this is still a disconcerting example how the past very well could be gone forever. If/when you have a chance, would appreciate your thoughts on the current French Connection calamity - apologies if already posted & I missed.

I made some Twitter posts. I was already thinking about putting a video together and talking about the video history as well. It’s really weird because I talked about it on social media last year when I heard about it, but there were so little information that I couldn’t see it in person myself and didn’t make a video. I guess I should’ve.

The fact that they actually worked on the DVD audio and made more problems instead of just fixing them.... A literal copy paste job from the Bosko set would have not only have been cheaper, more accurate, but it would have been literally no effort at all. For Jungle Drums they actually had to recreate the never ending title card for the new master.

Considering most of the audio errors were already present in the WB DVD of these cartoons, I've often wondered if they had been released like that to "foil" the " bootleggers" seeing as how these cartoons are PD. With the thoroughness of this video, I'm surprised you missed a big " new for blu ray" error. With the DNR use in the processing of these cartoons for the blu ray release, I've been pleased to find a lack of animation line erasure, except... In Japoteurs, just after Superman wrestling control of the plane, look at his cape. There is a sudden large spot matching the cape color that sort of sticks there for a short time, and also erases some animation lines in the same area of the cape at the same time. It only lasts for a few seconds, but it's unmistakable.

That’s possible in regards to making their version somehow unique. I hadn’t seen that moment you describe but it wouldn’t surprise me. I knew there had to probably be more things I didn’t notice in this run through that would probably come up later on. Thanks for letting me know and I’ll go look at it up close at home for myself.

Regarding "The Underground World", I think that was more of a case where the Warner Blu-Ray undid the reddish color timing that they applied to the cartoon on their DVD, based on the samples given. Whatever print Bosko Video used for the Image DVD seems to have aged considerably and lost a lot of its yellow colour information, so you can take it with a pinch of salt that Warner's approach this time was closer for that cartoon than it was in 2006. Otherwise, why they didn't undo the same timing present in The Mechanical Monsters' climax is beyond me.
