I just finished the book a couple minutes ago and I actually needed someone ''to talk to''. I felt kind of lost in the open because there was still so much to pick apart. After some reviews on social media, your video probably was my last chance to get bit more out of it before just lingering through the next days, occasionally thinking about it before finally fully engaging into the next book. I picked up reading last year and have only finished a couple books since then. Fleishman is in trouble was, moreover, only the second book in english, as it's not my first language. From the bottom of my heart: THANK YOU! Your input finally made me really understand the book and I had good two minutes of goosebumps and screaming ''oooohhhh'' :D 400 pages, especially in english, are a rather long commitment for me still. So who knows; maybe you helped keep the reading spirits up! So, once again: Thank you! :)

That is easily one of the nicest comments I've ever gotten here - thank you! Glad to keep up those reading spirits (in English no less) and thanks for letting me be your resource into the read.

What a fantastic review. Honestly, I have no intention of reading this book, but I really enjoy listening to your take on it.

Thanks! You say that, but it's inevitable that it will somehow enter your life in the next year - at least now you're forewarned.

Your review is spot on. I liked the plot and characters, but if the book had been written by alternating POV from each character and Toby and Rachel’s roles were reversed it would be meh.

I watched 5 reviews of Fleishman Is In Trouble on RU-vid and this one was the best and the only one that explained the role reversal that Fleishman’s role is actually the female role. Only concerned that Poptimist is actually too smart for me and I’m going to have to eventually find someone more on my level.

Trust me, you're fine - I am simply not that smart (are you watching the TV adaptation?)

Fleishman and Trick Mirror are both on my TBR list... I may have to pair them when I get there. "Axe Body Spray and truck nuts on the F-150." Classic.

Loving (and at the same time, overwhelmed and intimidated by) the longlist finally out for the BookTube Prize! Don't tell me you're reading both the fiction and non-fiction lists?!

ThePoptimist Ha. I am but I already have 30 under my belt. I should be able to finish the rest by late summer. I don’t work, though, so I have no excuses. 😂

I fell into the trap of this book because I feel like some of my feminist points got taken away after I read the end and how unsympathetic I felt towards Rachel. I think more than any book in a while, your lived family experience, growing up in a great or a really dysfunctional family and whether you’re happily married or have been divorced really informs how you see this book. Great review!!
@ThePoptimist
@ThePoptimist 4 года назад
Agreed! I'm still wresting with who comes out worse in the end - and maybe that's the point that no one person comes out completely unscathed as a result (think of the children!) And especially worthy of discussion is whether the marriage is worth salvaging at all? I see a book in either case really.

I don't really buy the premise that the wife's perspective isn't told in literature. Aren't divorce dramas a thing?

Which if frankly a crime. Truck Nuts are woefully under-represented in literary discourse these days.

Okay, this was the best review I heard of this. And it didn't make it sound like just another story about a middle aged men in New York. Still not sure I want to read it though. LOL.

Right? Middle-aged dude in New York - who wants to read that book again? Still, people are the worst type books aren't easy sells.

I read a couple of really positive reviews of this when it came out but this review definitely earned this book a place on my to-be-read pile! Have you watched Marriage Story on Netflix? It sounds like there might be interesting parallels/ comparisons to be made?
