Flexible solar panels have their Pros and Cons for Rving. Flexible Solar panels are half the weight, thinner, and can flex to curved surfaces but are twice as expensive and more fragile. There are also options in quality and coatings. Here are the links to the panels we have.

Great video! We bought our Lensun flexible panels for the weight savings and the ease in which we can deploy them in a portable configuration. I mounted ours on 1/2" PVC tubing with legs. They work great!

RVWithTito uses the flexible panels as window awnings. Very cool! Shade and power!

I recently saw someone with those flex panel awnings in a BLM campground recently. I had to chuckle :) They work great! Thanks Dennis.

Jared, you made my day with a solar panel video. I can't wait for you to help Marc and install solar panels on his new rig, Ginormous Ginger. You both are funny as heck when you work together. Well I mean while you work and Marc video tapes you working, but you know what I mean.

I'm actually waiting for Brian's new install of flexible panels. It includes the use of Polycarbonate panels to insulate the heat from the roof of an RV. I already have the panels and the material, but Brian always comes up with a unique way to install things, so I'm holding off until I see his video.

Funny, One of Brian’s flex panels just failed and he scrapped off. But it lasted 3 yrs I think. I like Megalodon Ginger. It definitely grew. It’s a beast.

Nice Video. I follow your channel and find your insight very informative. I dove into solar flex panels last year in prep for a trip to Alaska. I have a Lance travel trailer and didn't want the extra weight of glass panels or holes in the roof. I bought 3-120w panels and used a layer of 1/4" thick reflective material between the panels and TPO roof. Then I used Eternabond tape to secure them to the roof and ran wires down refrig vent to solar charger. They worked get on our trip and to this day. Just bought 2 100ah Lithium batteries to store the power in. I understand the marginal life span of flex panels, but they a cheap and who keeps a trailer for 20 yrs? We're happy and off the grid! Thanks for your channel.

After looking at pros and cons on the web about these panels being mounted flat against your roof and having no cooling airflow under them they become quite hot and deteriorate not mention possibly damaging RV roofs when removed. Cooling airflow underneath is quite important and can be achieved sometime as simple as inserting small wooden rods under the panels when installing. Any airflow under is better than none.

Good video & info. 3 yrs ago i was very interested in the flex panels for charging my batteries. I was especially interested due to their size & storage.We camp in the woods or shady areas and want the ability to move them into the sun vs a permanent installation. After doing my due diligence though I found a very high rate of failure and went to the glass option (100watt Renogy) for the reasons you mentioned (cracking, yellowing) + heat issues. I hope the newer one you are showing have a better success rate as I do like the advantages they have vs glass. I hope you do a followup in 6-12 months...

Great video! We went the opposite way and used big commercial panels to make a "mini-awning" that retracts when we are traveling on our bus. It was the best way we could think of to mount 3500 Watts on the roof :)

@@AllAboutRVs Hi Jared - we actually did a series of videos on how we did it. We designed the structure while our bus was in Mexico getting painted and then when we got it back we installed the racking, actuators, and finally the panels. We have been using it for about 4 months now (while we are finishing the build) and it has been working beautifully. Here is a link to the final video that shows it working - check it out when you get a minute: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wQRnECDIQ8E.html

KYD has got an even newer rig, just revealed on their channel. "Grand Ginger" is being replaced by a toy hauler, because the boys are having problems fitting in the bunks (One of them is the size of Dad) so they will sleep on the back queen beds. And it has a half bath back there, so less teen stink in the house.

Thanks Jarod for another informative video. Love the idea of an awning turning into an additional solar array; perhaps you just gave someone an inspirational idea! What about wind vanes as a power source? Is this unrealistic? Think of how much power could be contributed to a coach battery going 65 MPH down the road; of course the downside is it will not contribute much power parked. Keep up the excellent advice.

We have a Rockwood MiniLite 2507s. We always had full hookups for our weekend gateaways. Its time to change that. We bought a dual fuel Champion 3650 generator. However we don’t want to run it constantly during the day if we don’t need AC or microwave. We love to listen to music during the day but we dont want to drain our batteries. We have a solar plug on the side and we are thinking about Renogy 100w or 200w solar suitcase. We need battery power at night for our water pump, maxxair fan and usb outlets to charge our phones. We also have 2 standard deep cycle lead acid batteries at this point. We live in AZ and lithium batteries don’t like too much heat and they are pricey. What solar would you recommend? 100w or 200w and 2x 6v batteries or 2 agm?

you can mount them on flexable clear roofing plexy which gives you a 8mm air gap ;)

The pro's and con's were helpful, but I thought you were going to give some suggestions on how or where to utilize flexible solar panels. Using your awning as a base caught my attention but you didn't mention it again. How would you secure them from blowing of or staying in place laid on the awning ? Laying on a flat surface such as your awning, it is more efficient or not ?
@AllAboutRVs
@AllAboutRVs 5 лет назад
They would best be used on a slight curve surface like an airstream or a tear drop trailer or something along those lines. They would not work on an awning, that was just a hopeful comment for a possibility of something happening in the future. Sorry if that was confusing in the video.

Hi Jared, love the vids. Lots of helpful info every time. The one with the Victron Multiplus II was an instant fav. Ironically, Brian just posted a video detailing one if his flexible HQST panels that went out. I may have to stay away from them until manufacturing quality improves, especially since I have plenty of room for rigid panels. Happy fathers day.

Another great practical video man!! Painting with a wide brush here, even after all you have said with operator error, etc, I have always felt these flexible ones were just not as good. They are SO thin that all the heat breaks them down faster all said. JMHO but it makes sense. What do you think??
@AllAboutRVs
@AllAboutRVs 5 лет назад
I would use a traditional panel over a flexible whenever possible. With the lack of frame and structure they are more prone to failure not exactly sure to all the reasons but heat could contribute. The flexible are nice for those situations where you need the added benefit to conform to a streamlined shape. It would be interesting to put a camera on one as you drive down the road. Attaching just the edges and grommets I would be curious to see if the middle flexes up and down as you drive which would not be good. Just a few thoughts.

They are great when portable but permanently mounting on the roof of an rv is problematic from what I have read. Solar panels can age prematurely if they become to hot. The air gap underneath a tradition panel when mounting them on a roof of an RV moderates those temperatures. Most flexible panel installs basically glue them to the roof which is fine as long as they remain attached or you never want to remove them. Repairing or removing them can ruin the roof of an RV. Of course, this can also be said of traditional solar panels but their attachment points cover a small footprint and can be sealed easily. Whereas flexible panels need to be glued around the whole circumference of the panel which is dramatically larger surface area.

I wonder if you are getting good life because they are not mounted on a roof and get good underneath airflow for cooling.
@AllAboutRVs
@AllAboutRVs 5 лет назад
That is very possible but I also think I will end up having a failure because of moving them. I try to be careful but they do flex and bend when I set them up and put them away. I plan to replace these at some point with a pair of rigid panels and some hinges. A cheaper version of a solar suitcase.

I like the autoformer we have one for our Rig and are waiting to do a video on them. We are waiting till we go to a place where the power is suffering from low voltage. Either parks are doing better with power or we have been getting lucky. It’s been a while since we have been to a park with bad voltage and we have been checking every one we go to
