Moving on from landings and progressing through the BHPA Hang Glider Powered training syllabus to Engine Failures
Having flown a Paramotor for years, I thought I would try to learn how to fly a flexwing Nanolight PeaBee, it's like nothing else I have flown before. Join me on my Paramotor to Peabee conversion. It might seem simple but flying a flexwing, after having flown Stick and rudder aircraft for so long was not an easy experience and I'm glad I'm getting training.
This lesson was bringing together all the aspects of the circuit and landing. I had such a great lesson and it finally clicked. I was so happy at the end. Now to be consistent.
The song that Jim was singing can be heard at the link below:

Hi Giles Awesome stuff buddy. I still occasionally say “Right turn Clyde” in the 787. Most unprofessional and my young Co-pilots don’t know what I’m talking about 😂. I am very excited about your Peabea solo. I’ve been out of the country every time the weather has been vaguely decent so I’m stuck on lesson 2 in the flexwing at the moment. All the best Jim

Jim, thanks for getting back in touch. I must give you a call when you're back in the country. I do find it funny when you use a phrase and people look at you and don't have a clue. Good luck for some calm winter flying and more lessons. I hope my videos are helping by keeping you entertained at least.

I fly looking at possible landing fields like stepping stones, always have at least two in reach. I have used that method since I started paragliding cross country flying and it has kept me out of trouble on a couple of occasions.

Another great video, working my way through the P2P series at present, 6 v 2 next. Enjoying your analysis, and Jim's patter, good video and sound quality. Got Clyde, had visions of his arm out the side of the truck thumping the motor cycle gang. Re Jim's comment about phoning him if you have to make a landing out. Guess "What 3 Words" is a vital app in your kit. Cheers

@@GolfFoxtrot22 was actually fine I knew what I was doing by then so went into auto pilot . I was flying a Pegasus XL and the baffles had broken loose in the fuel tank . Without the instructor on board the climb angle was much steeper and the fuel ran to the back of the tank away from the pick up point . So basically the cause was running out of fuel !!

Nice video...thanks. One question or point. On you landings...it seems like you kind of "drag-it-in"...like you would on a much larger plane (landing with a very shallow approach). You are pretty far away from the runway and you loose altitude very gradually. If your engine were to quit, you would be in one of those fields below you on final. When I fly my ultralight, trike or PPG, I will fly the pattern fairly high (pattern altitude) then when I get close enough to the runway I will put the nose down and come in pretty steep. This gives me lots of altitude until the last minute and then with nose down I can make the runway if the engine stops (sometimes with our two stroke engines...at idle or low speed they can load up). Hope you can understand what I'm saying...when I watch your approach on the video the low altitude makes me sort of nervous. Thanks again.
@GolfFoxtrot22
@GolfFoxtrot22 4 года назад
I understand what you are saying. I think part 2 will help with showing steeper approaches. Jim has been teaching me the powered approach technique from the beginning of my lessons. Earlier in the video series he mentions that having a flatter approach is more accurate. You used the term dragging it in, that just a powered approach. Having the engine running, it's less likely to quit. If it does quit, I'm in the fields just before. It's how light and heavy aircraft approach. If you dive from a higher approach, you still have to get rid of that energy and we talk about this in part 2.
@stone8597
@stone8597 4 года назад
@@GolfFoxtrot22 It will be interesting to see the steeper approach. Your instructor definitely knows what he's doing. Thanks.

I see you're trying to transfer your thought processes from your previous experiences in flying other aircraft, And it's working well, Don't forget, you're starting the sub 70 experience with a whole lot of knowledge that will stand you in good steed, you look like a natural at this. Unsure about the sunglasses though, if they're polarised, they'll take the all-important glair you'll need to see from any oncoming aircraft, brains from thunderbirds or maverick from top gun, F.I.B Giles
@GolfFoxtrot22
@GolfFoxtrot22 4 года назад
Thank you and I deliberately didn't get polarised sunglasses. I've worn them is other p2p videos and it was really bright when we started. I learnt to do a really good lookout from. My gliding days. This has just stayed with me. Flying with 30 paragliders you soon learn to keep your head on a swivel.
