Linking funding of government regulation directly to the regulated rarely works out like one would think. So many incentive structures that can be corrupted. Look at bad police departments, US Food and Drug Administration, The FFA and Boeing, … the list goes on. I’m not sure there is a right solution, perhaps just a solution with an acceptable amount of corruption.

Hi matey, USA needs to create a new arm of faa or a new space launch only regulator. If they think it's hectic now, wait until all space companies are launching weekly. That is the way it's moving, too. They are used to running on an NASA time line wich is usually years not months. It needs to get sorted before things go wrong when they are overloaded with requests in future.
@simonowen1956

Usa doesn't deserve spacex I can't believe your regulation and red tape. History will show America shooting itself in the foot when China gets to the moon first. Yes I know that once great America got there before but the way your going your gonna come last.

@ryelor123

I agree. I do think a lot of what's going on right now is a plot by the DOD to sort of take over the Starship project. A year ago no one knew if that rocket could ever even get into outer space. Now after 4 flight tests, we know it can and we know it can survive reentry. The military potential of such a rocket for launching spy satellites, ultra fast logistics, and putting other hardware into space is so great, there's no way the military isn't interested in having power over the project. I really think there's an actual conspiracy going on. Just like how Musk was crazy enough to create the most powerful rocket, he's also crazy enough to not fall for such a scheme.

On the topic of the FAA being paid for speeding up processes; Football teams in The Netherlands can pay €5000,- (so I hear) to speed up checks at our Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) for new non-EU players. Otherwise it can take a few weeks before they're allowed to work (train, play matches). Some big projects here also paid local governments to hire extra personnel to speed up legislation/permit trajects. This wouldn't be any different. You just need to make sure that you don't become dependent on it as government body.
@ryelor123
@ryelor123 2 часа назад
I don't think the issue is simple friction with regulators. Like another channel mentioned, there's 3 different organizations that can approve a launch: the FAA, NASA, and the DOD. Now a year ago today, Starship was assumed to be a pipe dream that would ultimately end with impossible engineering challenges. Instead, it succeeded. Now of those 3 organizations, the DOD has a massive interest in Starship not only due to its capabilities but also issues of national security. SpaceX isn't working with DOD on the project and probably doesn't want to due to the rocket and associated technologies becoming classified and thus unavailable for civilian use. I think the DOD is pressuring the FAA to cause problems in order to force SpaceX to basically give the rocket, and its future, to the military by becoming reliant on the DOD for launch approval. Its difficult to overstate how big of a deal that rocket is for national security. Its capabilities make it very valuable for all sorts of missions and the military wouldn't want such a nice piece of technology being used only by civilians.

Companies funding the FAA would cause an ethical dilemma as the FAA would start seeing the organizations it audits as its benefactors. Not good when it's about audits and applying laws and safety protocols.

I think the FAA has the license process backwards. Rather spell out a set of rules to follow, specify acts to avoid. Your rocket launch should not kill or harm humans, or damage the property of others, or contaminate the environment with harmful substances in excess of documented level. In the event the launch causes harm, the company must have the financial resources to make restitution.

Great stuff as usual Marcus! It's only a 2 month delay to get IFT 5 off the ground. I suspect SpaceX will have IFT 6 and 7 ready to go by Flight 5. So we should the cadence increase early next year. A year from now, we should see operational use of Starship. So this delay is annoying but patience will pay off handsomely.

I akso think a good compromisse could be that those who need more work from FAA faster pay an extra fee to cover the excess work. In that way compsnies like SpaceX can help fasten the scheduele by shuffling in more money - Just like in any first class seat.

Regulatory bodies are built with public safety in mind, let's find solutions to streamline the process so space companies can make good progress in this modern space race.

You can not have SpaceX-payed people overlook SpaceX. You CAN have a very expensive fee for applying for anything, that funds the bureaucratic system. Problem solved? If the fees for someone like SpaceX were a million-ish dollars more per year, but the process was snappy for trivial stuff and reasonable for complicated stuff, they would probably be cool with that.

Like all government bodies, funding will get allocated to different agencies depending on the current administrations goals & political targets. Private money funding government agencies will simply not work. These agencies should be impartial to the organisations they oversee to provide clear & transparent judgement. One company adding money will always create incentive or pressure to prioritise that particular companies wants & needs. In turn creating a money race were other companies looking to move forward will need to pay more & the downward spiral increases. Just in the aerospace sector, the Boeing problem has had real human life consequences for an organisation being allowed to self regulate.
